A lot on this board would do well to listen to Ainge this morning. A guy who has been there. 4 total blitzes in two games and you can't take anything from this past game because it is essentially a live game practice. He's already said even with GT you'll see a different level of intensity and focus etc this week. It is what it is.

Doug Matthews said basically the same thing, throw out the first two games. It's a new season now and we'll see a much different team/scheme/gameplan.

One thing we have to admit after 2 games of playing Vanilla On D, is we only have a few players that are good enough to beat their man one on one.

If this defesne all of a sudden becomes a force it will all be on scheme and Shoop should get a lot of credit because the players havnt shown an ability to beat the hat in the front of them.

I agree with this. I like Butch and I'm the biggest optimist on this board but if he doesn't win the SEC East this fall his seat should be hot. He's had enough time to do so in a down division. Should have won it last year, he gets a pass for having so many injuries, but no more excuses this fall.

Win. The. East.

JMO, but I think UT, UF and UGA should each have a standard that they must win the SECE at least once every 3 years. Given what he inherited, last year was season 1 for CBJ to meet that standard. This is season 2.

It's Florida week

If the players don't come out playing like their testicles are in fire, there is no hope.

This is a fist fight for the East. Yes, there are more to come, but loser here is effectively toast

There are many folks on this board that deserve to watch a perennial 7-5 to 5-7 team.

My first coach was Doug Dickey. He actually started in 1964 but I think it was a couple years later before I was totally hooked. Truth: at a very young age I was already complaining about why we had a guy from Florida coaching our football team. I wasn't very consistent though because I actually liked Battle, at least for the 1st 3 years. Then Johnny came home, Phil knifed him in the back almost 16 years later, and well here we are, a few decades removed. It's been 53 years since Dickey's first season. We've only had 20 seasons where we won 7 games or less in a year. Whatever you may think winning 7 games or less unless you're one of us will get you fired PDQ. At least that's our history. I'm assuming by your comment you want Butch Jones fired. I personally think it's probably too early for that. I'd give him this year and next, probably. At least that's what I'm thinking right now. But remember I'm not all that consistent. :)

About that Majors/Fulmer thing, I don't know what happened. Johnny was in the hospital having heart surgery and we were all praying for him then he comes back and gets fired. Fulmer takes over. I figured from that point on we were a pretty ruthless fanbase.

Since 1964 we've had 10+ win seasons 14 times and won the SEC championship 7 times. So we win 7 games or less more often than we win 10 games or more but you can bank on a coach getting run out of town if he delievers on your 7 wins or less hope and most everybody in the Big Orange Nation will get over it PDQ even if the guy is a beloved family member with incredibly sympathetic circumstances. Ruthless. It will take 20 years off a coach's life or so I've heard. This is not a new thing and everybody has their own opinion on all things but anyone with your opinion is likely just itching to get a coach fired. I can't agree with you on that, at least not yet. jmo. :)

Hey guys, just dropping by to make sure we are still irate over the thrilling comeback victory and subsequent 35 point victory while scouting for a new coach.

Ok, cool. I'll see ya later

Hey Nick,

Just to bring you up to speed, while you were sleeping:

1) Shoop couldn't stop Florida's potent offense and we lost in humiliating fashion. So don't even bother with a pre-game thread this week.

2) We finished the season 7-5 and fahred CBJ.

3) Could you please start a coaching search thread instead? TIA!

Love and kisses, VN.

I get where you're coming from but I disagree. We were a VERY good team in 2015. That was his "year 1".

I've noticed that too. Neither qb looks all that comfortable. Another thing I've noticed that they look up tight. They don't look like they're having fun.

The whole program probably feels all the negativity from the media and fanbase. As we have said so many times, we eat our own. Sometimes, it gets to be so much that it's hard to ignore.

ZEro shot 9-3 wins the east at this point. Only way it could have was with a loss to Ga Tech

Went back and looked. It takes 6-2 or better to win the east. The lone exception was South Carolina in 2010. They won it outright that year at 5-3. Florida was at 4-4. Hard to believe but that Tennessee team would have finished second at 4-4 with Florida if not for the team picture we took in the end zone at LSU.

Headed down to Gainesville to see our Vols get a victory in the Swamp for the first time in 13 years. I believe that we will win, and all the rest of you can go to hell.

So his first 3 seasons were "year zero"? Dooley would be proud.

meh. Year 4 (last year) was his first year with all his players. I'm not saying he had three "year zeros", I'm just saying the standard (in my eyes) wasn't that he must win the SECE until last year.

His first year was "year zero" from a "who cares what happens on the field, just recruit and get better." (accomplished)

Year 2 was get bowl eligible. (accomplished)

Year 3 was get to a better bowl, set yourself up to compete next year. (accomplished)

Year 4 - win SECE (failed)

Year 5 win SECE (in progress)

Year 6 win SECE

That is the only minimum standard from here on out for him.

Again, JMO, but that is how I see things big picture for him.

I agree...

I hope the Ainge's and Matthew's are right in that we haven't shown anything yet, but it would have to be a total transformation for our D based on the first two games and seeing quotes from Shoop saying he kept guys in the whole game because they were the only ones he "trusted" in that game situation.
Our O line needs to wake up and get mean and consistent, our play calling needs to adjust over the course of the game based on the team and circumstances, our QB needs to quit staring down WRs and maintain pocket presence, and our D needs to just show up, get push on the line, and figure out a way to cut off the corner so every team doesn't run jet sweeps on us for first downs all day ... We somehow get a handle on those things and we should be looking at 7-8 wins. We have talent, it is just not being used/maximized correctly and consistently.

This week, the Vols are looking to go 3-0 in back to back years for only the second time since the SEC went to divisional play starting in 1992. The only other time it's happened was 2003-2004. Since divisional play started the Vols have started 3-0 six times but only once in back to back seasons.
