Again, that improvement typically happens from freshman to sophomore, unless we're talking linemen. Usually by this late in someone's career, especially if you've seen hundreds of snaps from them, you know what you have.

So the best a defensive player can tackle or diagnose a play quickly is at full potential when they are a sophomore?

Thats pretty ridiculous to assume.

I would say the majority do. They have learned how to take care of their bodies and most feel better able to handle life as an athlete. That helps them perform better athletically. Plus the game slows down with experience, which enables their athleticism to show up more. Time is their friend in this regard.

From junior to senior? I don't think so. Very rarely do you see a "breakout senior season."

As much as GT runs it, we have to have an LB staying home pretty much every play right? They only throw like a dozen times a game.

True. But if I'm PJ I'm going to try to put Jumper in a mismatch coverage once or twice somehow.

Could our starting LBs in the 4-3 be

McDowell Jumper Sapp?

I wonder how different the narrative on Jumper would be had he not played in 2015 and last year would have been his first year getting playing time. A lot different imo

What McElwain did at CSU is no more impressive than what Jones did at his previous 2 stops. None.

McElwain took over a great roster and so far has done okay with it. He's been more lucky than impressive IMO. This year will tell us more if he can take the next step.

Jones took over a mess of a roster and has improved every year. Last year was an outlier because of the injuries. This year will tell us whether he can take the next step as well.

In the meantime, I'm proud of the job Jones has done, and he has my full support. I feel like he can win here. I think it would not only be better for him but for our team if he had more support from the vocal and overly negative minority. I think he's earned it.

I agree with you, Kristy. I'll just add - even with the most injury missed starts of Any team last year, our team didn't take a step backwards - same record as 2015. I can't wait to see team 121 hit the field - are you ready for some football!?!

When is the last breakout senior you saw? Compared to breakout sophomores or juniors?

We're talking improvement, not break out years.

Another off-season in weight room, film study, and under the same coordinator and the guy is maxed out and can't improve?

Lol okay. Definitely disagree with that.

I don't think anyone would be excited about a senior seeing the field for the first time. Jumper can defy the odds and put it all together his senior year, but it would definitely be defying the odds. It just doesn't happen that often where a guy wasn't that great for 3 years then balls out his final year.

Seems like Austin Smith was getting a lot of buzz early in fall camp, but by the end of camp, haven't heard much of anything.

Returns are diminishing after sophomore year and definitely after junior year. Typically speaking.

This is basically his Jr year, he was granted an extra year and didn't play at all his Fr year. Ppl are so turned off by him bcuz of how bad he looked in 2015. 2016 he showed MAJOR improvement, it's not unreasonable at all to think he'll improve again

Guess we should only keep players for a couple seasons..

Kidding. That's your opinion. I highly disagree but that's why we're here.

Not saying Jumper will be a world beater- but the guy can improve on some attributes that make him a fine player.
