Between him and Byrd; two of the worst talent usage decisions in Butch's tenure IMO. The third would be Evan Berry.
Posters/fans should ask the question of how many L's could have been W's with the proper usage of players in general? There will be the usual detractors on here. But a shut down CB (Byrd) on the field last season does what? A shut down, tackling machine safety and capable CB (Gaulden) does what? Having an experienced playmaking RB that can catch the ball and take it to the house on any given play in the backfield when Hurd was acting like a turd and Kamara was hurt does what? Kelly did fine, but Evan with a couple of seasons of experience would have allowed them to run excellent dual backs every game and sent Hurd packing before last season started instead of begging him to stay and lying to him about how they would adjust the O. What does that do to team unity and the W/L column?
Instead they had one as a back up slot, the other as a nickel, and the third as a back up S when the positions they should have been playing were critically needed. Nobody is saying Butch did not have the $4 mill a year right and have reasons in his mind to do what he did. But he took his arm and bent it behind his own back on something very obvious, which added to the media narrative. I'm hopeful that with the changes in the coaching staff that stuff comes to an end. There is a fine line between 10+ win seasons consistently and 6-9 wins.
