Practice 7

Barnett is the greatest DL in school history and he backed that up with stats against elite competition. That's not luck by any means.

Just cannot agree with this statement....Although Barnett was extremely good at UT....

Stats are not the sole measure for greatness....

And from what the old timers have said....NO ONE was ever better than Doug Atkins...many even say that about him in the NFL....:salute:

We'll agree to disagree. Stats are absolutely the sole measure and show the effectiveness he had at the DE position. I'll even go out on a limb and say if he would've stayed his senior year then nobody would EVER come close to his sack record. Atkins was a great player but I can't put him above Barnett on the greatest list in his UT career. As far as the NFL, that remains to be seen what Barnett will do.

You would have to hope the SEC teams we beat have a good ranking for this team to make it to the playoffs. Our out of conference schedule would probably keep us on the outside looking in.

Our OOC schedule is better than most of the bic tin. :p

Yeah, I think DB was an incredible asset to our defense and I've been following him since we pulled out all the stops to get his Mom to allow him to come to the hill instead of going to James Franklin's Vandy. I did, however, go back and look to see who he recorded his record breaking 33 sacks against.

SC = 7 (3 games)
KY = 5 (3 games)
FL = 4 (3 games)
OM = 3 (1 game)
GA = 3 (3 games)
VD = 3 (3 games)
AL = 2 (3 games)
OK = 1 (2 games)
A&M = 1 (1 game)
MO = 1 (3 games)
NE = 1 (1 game)
NW = 1 (1 game)
NT = 1 (1 game)

23/33 sacks came against SEC East teams so I'm not sure over the last 3 years the SEC East has been considered all that elite. However, given that his sack against North Texas is the only non-P5 sack on the books, it could be argued 97% of his sacks came against P5 opponents, and almost half (48.5%) came against top 25 opponents.

I still think we should have made a better offer than the Eagles and kept him for his senior year.

DB is making a little over 3 mil a year and got a 7.5 mil signing bonus.

11-1 is very likely.

Butch has yet to beat an SEC West team or win at the Swamp. Atleast on paper we aren't even in the same league with Ala or LSU and we all know our history in the Swamp. 9-3 at best is more likely than 11-1 and atleast so far Butch has shown he will lose atleast 1 game to someone he shouldn't either Vandy,Mizzou,UK or SCe..So based off History 8-4 is the absolute best we can hope for. But hopefully Butch changes that and gets beyond the " hasn't beaten a west team or really even come close", "win in the Swamp", "and not lose atleast 1 game he shouldn't" stumbling blocks that has kept him from taking us to the next level. But he did take a huge step in the off season by upgrading his MAC Conference staff into a true SEC Conference type coaching staff. Just looking at the staff Ala and LSU has is pretty depressing. Obviously Saban is the best HC in America but LSU has the best set of OC and DC's in college football. But every replacement hire Butch made was a huge upgrade in coaching and recruiting.

The defensive ends will be better this year than last year. Kongbo and Taylor are upgrades over Barnett and Vereen. They are more gifted physically and have better upside. Barnett and Vereen were very much overachievers. Kongbo and Taylor have more potential. I also like the depth Phillips, Johnson, and Butler provide.

I'm very optimistic about the DEs this year.

DB started as a freshman and broke Reggie Whites sack record. Overachiever lol! How about Bad A$$!

Our out of conference schedule is pathetic but in no way would we miss the playoff.

I actually think Georgia Tech will help us out in this regard. I expect them to win the ACC Coastal like Va-Tech last year. It's always our luck that our OOC opponent and the team we play from the West is always on the upswing when we get them.

I just don't see the point in playing GA tech. I see no upside to playing them besides possible recruiting returns. I'd much rather play a clemson, OU, Ohio state.

I agree that Butch very well could lose agaisnt another inferior opponent. I see it more likely that we go 11-1 with a loss to either Mizzou or Alabama than 9-3. We won't lose to LSU or GA at home.

Can you name one coach in the SEC that hasn't lost to any teams they shouldn't have? Come on. Every team in the SEC loses to someone they were supposed to beat every single year. Even Saban when he loses should never get beat. People need to realize winning 10 games plus requires everything to go your way. With the competition is this league any coach that wins 8 games in a season is earning his job. Now if a team is losing to all the teams they are supposed to lose to and never upsets anyone that's a bigger problem to me than someone losing one to someone they were supposed to beat. The Talent in the SEC top 8 teams is really good and can beat any team on any Saturday.

if you ignore the existence of Reggie White.... I think for the sake of peace we call them 1a and 1b and you can assign A as your preference goes?

No they don't. I did the calculations. Our rosters are roughly identical in terms of talent. With the game being in Neyland, it gives us a distinct advantage.

I believe we win that game. It'll be close once again. But we'll win. Probably something like 31-28.
We will skull drag the pups and Zero chics likes D KS will never be heard from again.

I read on GoVols247 that Hoke said our defensive line has a LONG WAY to go. Should we be concerned with the amount of experience Hoke has coaching defensive lineman and to hear that from him?

It would be professional malpractice if a coach said anything else at this point in August camp.

You do know how stupid this post is... right?

I hope the DE's are great but to say they're going to be better at this point... can only be described as stupid.

You do remember that Barnett broke the sack record of a UT and NFL LEGEND, right?

I still think UT should just redshirt Tuttle. In the long run, it would probably be the best thing for Tuttle and UT.

I don't think he would want to stick around 3 more years. I bet he wants to play this year then have a strong senior year and get drafted.

Or? Redshirt, have a KILLER RS Jr year and get drafted higher?!

You have to remember something about D4H, he doesnt think Barnett was that good. He was in love with Myles Garret even though stats proved Barnett was far better. Also, he doesnt even know who Reggie White is. Anyone who tries to argue Josh Dobbs in the same universe as Peyton Manning when it comes to passing the football is beyond help.
