I've always wondered what the connection was with Russell
Athletics. Nothing against them, but it always puzzling. I'm not joking when I say that it could negatively effect recruiting.
CPJ: ◾3 games in 13 days, so tough but have to be up to the taske
GT runs a rarely seen option offense which is difficult for teams to prepare for since they normally will only see it once a season or less. This offense slows the game down in terms of plays run and is such that it allows teams with smaller linemen and often less talented players to better compete with other teams. This is a significant benefit and clearly leads to additional wins that the team would likely not get with a more standard offense. I think this is why many people label GT as not very good.
I think this is the main knock on GT. They run an offense that many call a gimmick. I wouldn't say gimmick as much as it is outdated. 40 years ago most of the major powers ran the triple option. Now the only teams running it are GT and the service academics. It acts to level the playing field so to speak. It gives them the ability to shorten the game and hang with teams that, based strictly on talent, should be able to run them out of the stadium. Kinda like when we played Air Force a decade ago.
Exactly.
To add, running that offense indicates the coaches have conceded any possibility of competing for a NC. That is an indicator of a second rate program.
We came really really close in 2014, just a couple more plays our way early in the season and we could have been undefeated. Also our coach has won many national championships at GA southern, of course that wasn't D1 though. But we have come way closer to a national championship over the past few years than UT with our system.
Will Paul Johnson be in any more danger of losing his job than he currently is should Tech lose to the Vols? For Butch Jones it's a definite yes. I think there's a difference in expectations and size of each fan base. I'm not saying that there aren't passionate Yellow Jackets who believe 1990 can be recaptured. It's just that they seem to be few in number.
Yes being in the middle of SEC country does not help, add that with limited degree options and mandatory calculus in all degrees you have an issue with recruiting. We've actually had two kids in recent years not make it to one game. 1 guy was here for the spring and then couldn't keep the grades up and the other didn't even make it to campus. Both were arguably two of our best RB recruits since Paul has been our coach.Tech certainly has challenges with recruiting being in a sort of open city where everyone in the SE expends a lot of resources. I'm sure the academic reputation intimidates/eliminates some prospects. I think Johnson has a great job making Tech a tough team to beat. If Vols fans had no respect for Tech, you would be getting a lot of questions about directions to Fat Matt's and MARTA park and ride lots on the north side instead of worries about blocking schemes and such.
