Disappointment..

Read that a few mins ago. Thats taking the extra step.

- "Coach Jones, what is your opinion of the 2016 season?"

- "I hope we don't waste a failure."

Can "Champions of Failure" be forthcoming?

I don't understand how people get so infuriated when someone posts yet another stupid thing Butch said.

If we don't talk about it, does that mean it didn't happen?

We want to hear the coach tell the fans that he hates to lose and fall short. Competing on a championship level is a standard. Talk like a champ and walk like a champ imo.

i personally didn't see the big deal about it tbh. and as the aftermath of "disapointgate" continues, i still don't see the big deal here.

he's an ultra positive guy, that doesn't want any ounce of negativity to fester INSIDE the program.

i had a boss once when i was a whole lot younger that told me..."there's only opportunities". i asked what the hell that meant...and he went on to explain....a failure is only a failure if you do nothing with it, and get better as a result. you aren't going to be perfect or do a good job all the time. you will make mistakes, and you will fail.

all they are, are opportunities to succeed. i think Butch sees things similarly, right or wrong.

but here's the deal, and something i've just come to accept about the guy...this IS who he is, and it wouldn't do him or the program any good to change is basic, core philosophy. that would make him more of a phonie.

all in all, if this is the only thing that has people's shorts in a bunch, i call it a win. we've seen and heard worse. and at the end of the day, he said what mattered...."there's more for us to do in terms of winning championships, that's the expectation, and we understand that".

As much as I like Butch losing to either S. Carolina or Vandy and especially in the same season is far beyond disappointing.

I'm sure Butch was disappointed but he can't say that publicly. It doesn't matter if you are disappointed, his team was 9-4. Get over it and look forward to 2017.

That's kind of the point... Why can't he say it? There's nothing wrong with the word. It is an honest, common sense description of what everyone associated with UT football should be feeling. It doesn't communicate negativity or anything of the sort. It communicate an honest belief that the team did not do what they were capable of doing.

Even Smart pretty much said it during his time. They're disappointed they weren't in ATL. But Jones who had the favorite isn't disappointed?

I pretty much loath Finebaum... but he may be on to something with his speculation that Jones is trying to lower the bar.

Speak for yourself. I don't care if he says anything. Some of you gripe and moan about wanting to see results on the field, just win...then get your panties in a wad because of what he says. Who cares?

Everyone has their own leadership / speaking style.

Poster above may have nailed it; "Jones my be somewhat ultra positive (outwardly) to protect his players and ward off negativity inside the program". I, for one, believe he gives the team hell inside the locker room when they aren't playing to expectations...just see it in his eyes and demeanor on the field.

OTOH...I think he did say it, not as directly as you may like..but he did say they fell short of various goals, which in and of itself...would indicate disappointment.

Dissension in the ranks and injuries wrecked last year more than game day coaching...JMHO, but will concede the first one is 100% CBJ's to bears.

Because the dumb stuff he says invariably comes immediately after some debacle on the field or in recruiting, compounding the frustration already present.

"I look like a dumb@ss on the sidelines, but lemme go ahead and confirm it at the press conference".

I swear, hearing people still talk about how bad things are because of what Dooley did is worse than hearing liberals still blame George Bush for all our ills. How many starters on last year's team did Dooley recruit?

Ten years from now when Tennessee still hasn't won the SEC, people are going to be talking about how bad things were under Dooley and how Butch left the cupboard bare when he left to coach Arkansas State lol.

It was 1 comment in a week of comments. Definitely wasn't the defining statement of the week.
As you suggested, it made no difference and no one actually cares. Why the full force of the drama club?
The panties were always going to be wadded, just had to pick why.

Who gives a rats ass? Whether you agree or like it, his current players have no problem with it and his current recruits don't seem to be bothered with it. So why do you?

If the "gutless coward" fails this year he will probably be gone and you won't have to listen to it anymore. Whatever happens there will nothing you can do about it but what you're doing now.

I've never cared about all the dumb stuff he says and especially this. The last 4 years are done, gone. All I care about now is this season and how everything he's done and said this off season translates on the field. If he fails I hope he's gone, if he succeeds I'm good. Either way, it won't fawking matter.

Don't let the turkeys get you down.

You know it matters. It matters so much it hurts when things go wrong and is such a boost when things go right.

I'm not buying that it won't matter.

So you're predicting 10 more years of failure? The burden you must carry to post on here KNOWING that. :cray:

At this stage it doesn't really matter. Through his first couple of years he could shape the conversation or perception however he wanted and time was completely on his side. He can't talk his way around "disappointment" much longer.

He's gonna try and the pumpers are gonna help him!

I meant, what he said won't matter. And it won't.

It might matter. If it gets the players to "own" the disappointment while defending the HC, it could actually help unite the team even more.

The whole, "You got my back?", business.

A company can have a good year while individuals can have a disappointing year. An individual can have a great year while the company they work for (due to actions of others) had a disappointing year.

Context is very important. Do you think Jennings was disappointed with the ENTIRE season and his personal performance given that he burned Tabor and caught that pass?

It's just not that simple to compare the answer to a question from a coach to a player.

CBJ clearly understands that the media would like nothing better for him to throw himself, all the coaches and all the players under the bus. That is why the question was asked. He knows that his answer reflects on EVERYONE associated with the team including ALL the players. A response from a player reflects only on HIMSELF.

Unless a person is perfect - a year is always filled both met and not met expectations. 2016 had both - successes and failures.

Thats not what was said, John Currie said Beverly took it back and Butch told the team it would be next Tuesday before they would find out.

Nah. I don't want Butch to fail.

I actually want us all to be on the same page about our coach the way Bama fans are about Saban or the way FSU fans are about Jimbo.

Trust me, I dream of a world where Butch makes all the haters (myself included) eat crow and just plain out-coaches the HC's he goes up against. He calls ballsy plays consistently, doesn't let off the gas, and gets praised for his on-the-field ability.

I would love nothing more than to go into games thinking "At least we know we have a better Head Coach than them." Even if we lose, it would be great to not think we lost due to coaching.

I just don't see any of that happening when you're in your 4th year, and your team is capable of losing to Derek Mason's Vanderbilt. I would love to be proven otherwise.

Are you of those guys that has this perfect women in your head and as soon as she messes up you bail?

CBJ isn't going to be the coach you want always or maybe ever! Are you going to bash him every time he doesn't meet your expectations?

A lot of our fans are 4's but will only marry 9's or up. They live their life never saying anything wrong or making mistakes.

I know, I know the stupid comeback is he makes 4mil so we have every right to be jealous.... I mean criticize him every chance we get!!
