I'm sure Butch was disappointed but he can't say that publicly. It doesn't matter if you are disappointed, his team was 9-4. Get over it and look forward to 2017.
We want to hear the coach tell the fans that he hates to lose and fall short. Competing on a championship level is a standard. Talk like a champ and walk like a champ imo.
That's kind of the point... Why can't he say it? There's nothing wrong with the word. It is an honest, common sense description of what everyone associated with UT football should be feeling. It doesn't communicate negativity or anything of the sort. It communicate an honest belief that the team did not do what they were capable of doing.
Even Smart pretty much said it during his time. They're disappointed they weren't in ATL. But Jones who had the favorite isn't disappointed?
I pretty much loath Finebaum... but he may be on to something with his speculation that Jones is trying to lower the bar.
Speak for yourself. I don't care if he says anything. Some of you gripe and moan about wanting to see results on the field, just win...then get your panties in a wad because of what he says. Who cares?

Because the dumb stuff he says invariably comes immediately after some debacle on the field or in recruiting, compounding the frustration already present.
"I look like a dumb@ss on the sidelines, but lemme go ahead and confirm it at the press conference".
It was 1 comment in a week of comments. Definitely wasn't the defining statement of the week.
As you suggested, it made no difference and no one actually cares. Why the full force of the drama club?
The panties were always going to be wadded, just had to pick why.
I've never cared about all the dumb stuff he says and especially this. The last 4 years are done, gone. All I care about now is this season and how everything he's done and said this off season translates on the field. If he fails I hope he's gone, if he succeeds I'm good. Either way, it won't fawking matter.
I swear, hearing people still talk about how bad things are because of what Dooley did is worse than hearing liberals still blame George Bush for all our ills. How many starters on last year's team did Dooley recruit?
Ten years from now when Tennessee still hasn't won the SEC, people are going to be talking about how bad things were under Dooley and how Butch left the cupboard bare when he left to coach Arkansas State lol.
It might matter. If it gets the players to "own" the disappointment while defending the HC, it could actually help unite the team even more.
The whole, "You got my back?", business.
Nah. I don't want Butch to fail.
I actually want us all to be on the same page about our coach the way Bama fans are about Saban or the way FSU fans are about Jimbo.
Trust me, I dream of a world where Butch makes all the haters (myself included) eat crow and just plain out-coaches the HC's he goes up against. He calls ballsy plays consistently, doesn't let off the gas, and gets praised for his on-the-field ability.
I would love nothing more than to go into games thinking "At least we know we have a better Head Coach than them." Even if we lose, it would be great to not think we lost due to coaching.
I just don't see any of that happening when you're in your 4th year, and your team is capable of losing to Derek Mason's Vanderbilt. I would love to be proven otherwise.
