Disappointment..

LOL Nick Saban would call it a disappointment. That's the difference between good and great. Vickers told the truth. Guess the players will disown him. Goodness

Plenty of room on the Alabama ban wagon.....

Witch Doctor say another 24/7 thread they punk "Volnation" with. Rucker is on here laughing at vol fans. No one noticed how that was structured as if they were conflicting statements(theyre not) Hurt a Vols feeling, get a reaction. Thats the easy math.

Giving him the benefit of the doubt and the fact he made several moves with the staff, I would say that he was. Having said that, he's trying too hard to control the public perception of what happened last year.

That's a pretty futile endeavor... and denying reality can't help him at all. With the East and Sugar Bowl on the line, he lost to two terrible football teams... one led by a HS Sr QB.

At this stage it doesn't really matter. Through his first couple of years he could shape the conversation or perception however he wanted and time was completely on his side. He can't talk his way around "disappointment" much longer.

Butch is a career 8 win coach, so 2017 shouldn't have been a disappointment. Butch will probably win 7-9 games a year on a consistent basis with an occasional 5 win season along with an occasional 10 win season. I don't think he will ever compete for the conference championship here (actually playing in Atlanta in December). He will recruit well and bring in quality kids who stay out of trouble and represent the University with class.

I've said this the past year and a half.

But, at least he's banking jack doing it, I guess.

Lol wow I just came back to this thread. I love what it has become, only on VN would this become a debate. The butthurt is stunning here too. As the OP, let me clarify a few things.

- I really don't care that Butch didn't call last season a disappointment. Butch is the master of coach speak. I found it humorous the way the articles were laid out. It almost looked like Vickers was correcting him.

- Don't get me wrong, Butch is not a good coach.

- I'm happy for everyone here who feels a solid rebuttal is Butch's demeanor at SEC Media days. That doesn't make him a good coach. Beat Muschamp, with the East, and we'll discuss your demeanor.

Think jury still out on Butch and has stuff to prove, for sure, the next two years, but I'm not ready to say he isn't a good coach. I think he has made stellar moves to improve the staff and recruiting to upgrade the team...not protecting "his coaching buds" he brought in, for the sake of the team.

With this mind-set you could literally take what everyone says is the best conference in football who pays the most to get the best, and say that, outside of Saban, all others are not good coaches...which I think is a tad presumptuous. No other SEC coach besides Saban I'd want to substitute for Butch in the strongest conference in football. I think we're moving in the right direction, but doesn't mean we'll never lose another game we're supposed to win...happens to most all teams. Trend line is what I look at...progress towards the goal, though have to admit that patience getting there is tough.

Hmm, blaming a coach for looking at life through a positve lense. He said the team did not reach the goals but that he does not look at the season as a dissapointment. I agree but foolishly I take into account the injuries and young depth we had to replace it.

If all of the excuse making were 100% valid... then it still qualifies as a disappointment.

As for the last part, he basically had to deal with what pretty much any other program would have to deal with. You don't find many teams that go 3 or 4 deep with 3rd, 4th, and 5th year players. EVERYONE plays youth at times.

I'm sure Butch was disappointed but he can't say that publicly. It doesn't matter if you are disappointed, his team was 9-4. Get over it and look forward to 2017.

I've asked this question in this thread and have yet to see a direct response.

Had he gone with Vickers description, "It was disappointing" publically does that change anything?

I've seen several responses to why he didn't (even tho he essentially covered his tracks in short order directly after). And most of the reasons were silly at best.

I'm curious if those defending why he didn't would call him out considering.

I don't think it would materially change anything if Butch came out and said it was a disappointment. I think he should considering the context. Picked to win the east, ranked #10ish during the season, etc. But it's also okay for him, in the same breath, to point to an unusually high number of season ending injuries on defense or those that caused a starter to miss significant playing time. Everybody knows USCe and Vandy were miserable failures even still, but it sure was nice to see the Vols ball up Nebraska and finish with a nine win season. I would prefer a coach speak frankly. I have no problem with it and I don't think players or recruits would either. Shows he's aware of the optics and the world around him. I would also prefer he dispense with the cliches. Just Shoot straight. I think he'd catch a lot less grief.

Jones fails to get by SCAR and Vandy to make the SECC, and fails to get by Vandy to make the Sugar Bowl, but doesn't consider it "a disappointment."

Saban calls the loss of the NC game "a failure."

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the difference between championship SEC football and participation trophy MAC football.

so sick of this **** where our fans are rooting for the coach to fail.

I've never wanted him to fail, I've just never been convinced he would succeed. And I'm least convinced now more than previously but that's JMO of course.

And by succeed I mean the minimum, win the SEC(not just the east).

Read that a few mins ago. Thats taking the extra step.

- "Coach Jones, what is your opinion of the 2016 season?"

- "I hope we don't waste a failure."
