Here are the annual "Hot Seat" rankings per CBS Sports and I have fallen for their click bait. The rankings are 0 (Untouchable) to 5 (Win or Be Fired). Butch is ranked a "2" (All Good, for now). I think a 2 or 3 is fair for Butch and I think this is a pretty fair ranking. Compared to some in the national media that think Butch's seat is scorching, this is the 2nd time in as many months that I think Dodd from CBS has given a balanced view of the CBJ tenure.

Regarding other SEC coaches, I would think that Hugh Freeze would have a much hotter seat than he does. I would think Malzahn and Butch would be in a similar spot so I was a tad shocked Malzahn was a "3".

I know this is the 106,000th thread about this in the offseason but I think it's relevant that not everyone in the national media thinks Butch will be gone by October.

It is very, very unlikely that JOnes is on any kind of warm seat. Maybe he should be a 3... but he's probably a 1.

I'm not really into that kind of thing, but cut him some slack, I think Jones is at least a 6. That buzz cut though :wink2:

Malzahn is 11-13 in the SEC since going 7-1 in his first year. He also hasn't beaten Bama since then. Auburn fans have seen championships lately... and expect them.

Malzahn come in to a loaded Auburn team which he helped recruit and knew the kids. Very different scenario compared to Coach Jones coming here.

I took it that a "3" was too kind for his situation.

I think the LSU/AU game last year was a death match for the coaches. And while Gus survived he didn't exactly store up much equity after that.

Muschamp, SharkHumper, Smart - 2
Mullen - 1
Saban - 0 (only if the NCAA finds the bagman)


In short, here's how I view rankings

4's and 5's better win more games than the prior season or they are gone.

2's and 3's are safe as long as they maintain status quo in 2017 - 2's have more room for error than 3's

0's and 1's are safe pending something crazy happening

I didn't compare him to Jones. The OP said something about being surprised the writer gave him a 3 on the hot seat scale. I'm just trying to help guess at why.

But Odom inherited a mess, a weak roster, and a state without much talent... how can you not give him more than 2 yeas... maybe like 8?

This actually sounds where CBJ really should be all things considered. He is not a 0, he is not a 1 because of the Vandy loss. Had the team beat Vandy, he would probably be a 1.

After taking a deeper look, Odom should be a 3 probably. They did replace a basketball coach after 3 years but I think Mizzou wouldn't fire Odom with another 4-8 season (to be honest, I though Mizzou went 2-10 or 3-9 last year so maybe I should have taken a look at the records before spouting an opinion)

my ranking. kinda wanted to give out some .5 as some guys could go either way.

Freeze will have to have a darn good season or completely dodge the NCAA to avoid getting fired.

Sumlin has got to do better or he is gone.

Malzahn is half a step ahead of Sumlin.

Smart, things aren't as good as they seem in UGA.

Butch, some people always want him gone. needs to show something.

Mason is good except for a complete drop. beating UT and making a bowl bought him a couple years.

Stoop also got an extension because of the bowl.

Bielema is starting to get warm, needs to show improvement in wins soon.

odom is a second year coach with a dumpster fire program and not many expectations.

Muschamp had a surprising first year. beating us was definitely a feather in his cap.

shark boy keeps winning the east.

Orgeron is borderline 3, but being his first season I see him getting a couple years.

Mullen and saban the schools are definitely happy with those two.

my grading:
5= or else
4= maybe gets next year
3= definitely gets next year
2= good for a couple years as long as no drop off
1= can get away with a lot
0= could get away with murder or sleeping with the school presidents wife/daughters while live streaming the event.

So much talk about people wanting Butch gone when, in actuality, people want him to win. Huge difference.

So, the only two "win or be fired" coaches at 5 are

Brian Kelly (Notre Dame)
Sumlin (Texas A&M)

Sounds very accurate for those two.

The 4s (Start improving now):

Rich Rod (Arizona)
Todd Graham (Arizona St)
Paul Haynes (Kent St)
Kingsbury (Texas Tech)

Sounds about right there too, though I don't know anything about Kent State.

The 3s (Pressure is mounting)

Gus (Auburn)
Steve Addazio (Boston College)
Mike Jinks (Bowling Green...though odd it's a 2nd year for him)
Lance Leipold (Buffalo)
Brad Lambert (Charlotte)
Scottie Montgomery (ECU, another second year coach)
Stoops (Kentucky)
Mark Hudspeth (LA Lafayette)
Barry Odom (Mizzou)
Doug Martin (NM State)
Gary Andersen (Oregon St)
Jim Mora (UCLA)
Mark Whipple (UMass)
Matt Wells (Utah St)
Derek Mason (Vandy)

Don't agree with some of those. However, we typically see, what, maybe 10-15 coaching changes in any given year? So, some of those 3s should be 4s and likely some of the 2s are ranked lower than they should be.

Joe Moglia (Coastal Carolina, don't know anything about them, but it's kind of a "wait...wut...why" choice)
Jimbo Fisher (agree)
Bill Snyder (He'll go when he wants, K State ain't in any hurry)
Jim Harbaugh (agree, but he'll have to start showing improvement for the big salary)
Ken Niumatalolo (agree, good coach)
Urban (imagine that...)
Rocky Long (kind of a stretch)
David Shaw (agree)
Gary Patterson (not sure about this one)
Chris Petersen (agree)

Keep in mind that with 1 change you typically will get another as coaches move around. So if all 6 ranked as 4 and 5's were to move on or be moved on - that more than likely leads to 12 changes.

Good point, though I think your number of 12 might be a bit high. (Not taking into account coordinators and NFL staff that could move around)
