Shoop: New-look defense has 'chip on their shoulder'

Nobody will run on UT's defense

You just know Bob Shoop has probably woken up in a cold sweat more than once this off-season, those fateful words echoing from some nightmare he just had.

He won't say anything this time around, but you can bet good money that he's bound and determined to show this season what he meant to show last season. It's gotta be a big burr under the saddle for him.

The good news, according to Bob, is we have a chance to be better. Yay us.

Folks on here complaining about Shoops remarks, what do you want him to say. We are going to be great, or do you want him to say we are gonna suck. Some of you will complain about everything, injuries were a huge part of the problem and as Shoop said they probably didn't adjust enough. The man isn't going to make some of you happy no matter what he says, I can't wait for fall. GO BIG ORANGE!!!!!

How about:
"We have a long way to go to get where UT needs to be. We are recruiting well. The players have tons of heart. They're willing to put in the work. We coaches have to be better. And, injuries or not, we coaches WILL be better than last year.

You won't believe this is coming from me, but our injuries on D really hurt

I believe we will see an improvement as long as the injury monkey stays off our back

I've seen the good in you more than once, Count, even though you frequently try very hard to keep it hidden behind that black cape. So I do believe. :)

That's a fair rebuttal. All the problems I cited were from the past.

How bout this...those problems which went unsolved in previous seasons lead me to believe we will witness other issues related to coaching/leadership going on this year.

There may be problems, if so I would expect completely new ones.

CBJ wore out "consistency" when he 1st arrived, 1st two years it wasn't the problem. 119 had an issue with the way the finished games. 120 corrected that(except for the SC and Vandy anomalies), but had an issue with the way they started and being very loose with the ball(How many times did we fumble?).

Here's to 121 getting it together.

I like our chances.

Missed your Q earlier. Sorry.

I have 4 specific losses and one wildcard.

There's only 4 on the schedule that aren't gimmies(expected wins).

I call 3 of them toss ups. FL, GA, and LSU.

bama, we are the underdog.

We could end up losing all 4 if our QBs are a flop. If either one lives up to their billing, we could end up winning it all. By all I mean 15-0 NC. If too many breaks goes against us or we play uninspired football there are 3 or 4 gimmie games that could go wrong as well.

There's a lot that can go right just as there is a lot that can go wrong.

Here's to 121 getting enough right that we don't have any losses.

I think not having year long Captains will help with the player leadership. 12 games X 4 Captains = 48 possibly different leaders. I expect some repeats but the selection process could work as an added incentive in a long grinding year. 5 months of razor like focus on football has to be a challenge.

I like our chances.

Should be a solid defense next season. I think top 5 in SEC.

Thing we need to correct for 2017:

Big plays on defense: those gashes on running plays and bad technique on pass defense.

Penalties: We went from best to worst.

Turnovers: Way to many, not enough forced after first 2 games. Cost us aTm game.

Injuries: Help us out here Rock!

Better Kicking from 40+: Come on Medley, straighten them out.

CBJ has yet to beat a west team.
- We lose Bama and LSU.
UGA has more talent and a 2nd year, proven QB. Do not like our odds in Gainesville.
- We lose UF, and UGA.
CBJ loses 2 he shouldn't and has yet to beat Muschamp.
- We lose either USCe or maybe UK(??)

You must be a selective reader of articles, in one article just published a few weeks ago Shoop talked about how he made mistakes in adjusting the scheme as injuries mounted. So quit acting like he hasn't addressed coaching decisions. GBO!!!!

The defense kicked Florida's ass and Shoop staying aggressive the entire second half rather than going prevent and giving up one 3rd & Chavis after the next is a big reason Florida's win streak is over.

The defense was so devastated by injuries by late in the season that we were freaking out when Paul Bain was slow to get up off the turf.

I still have confidence in Shoop.

You didn't read the article... he also said: "We can be a better defense, but it's not because Derek Barnett's not here," Shoop said during an interview with Sports Radio WNML's Jimmy Hyams that aired on Thursday. "Yes, we can be a better defense. We have to be a better defense. We have to play better than we played last year, and we will. This is a different team. Team 121 is certainly different than Team 120."

With Barnett gone, it needs be a better defense. He is the best defensive player Tennessee has had in ten years. The scheme has to improve just to make up for losing him.

I would press him to define different, but I would rather he show us...this fall.

Stop being negative. Do you have to say something negative in every thread?

We're a long ways out... but IMO he breaks through this year and beats LSU.

UGA has more talent and a 2nd year, proven QB. Do not like our odds in Gainesville.

If Jones has changed and the staff is as good as the "look on paper"... I'm looking for a split.

IF all that happens. He's gone... or should be.

I don't think UK or USCe are good enough to beat UT unless there are extraordinary circumstances like last year.

I see nothing outside of hope and "Ogeron is a bad coach" which suggests finally breaking the streak to the West. Both teams are more talented than UT.

I haven't thought VU, UF (under muschamp), USCe, and Mizz were good enough to beat UT either. And look where that got us.

we are very close to LSU in talent and ill take Butch over O and I'm not a Butch fan. Plus the most important position on the field we have the edge, Dormady or JG are better than anything LSU can put on the field. The defense will be top 10-15 in the country this year and the O line will be the best in the SEC.
