"We may not have the star power," Shoop said. "On offense it may not be a (Joshua) Dobbs or a(n) (Alvin) Kamara. On defense it may not be a Barnett, a Maybin or a Sutton. But I think as a whole unit on defense, we have a chance to be better than we were a year ago."
Two of the biggest factors with those chances are minimizing big running plays and defending 50-50 balls better in the secondary. The 37 plays of 30-plus yards Tennessee allowed last season were the second-most in the conference, and the Vols surrendered five plays of at least 70 yards, four of them running plays. Shoop said the key to limiting them isn't rocket science: It's just pursuing, getting off blocks and tackling better.
He also indicated the Vols have made "a couple of technical changes" with their cornerbacks that should help them win more one-on-one battles in coverage.

I'll give shoop a pass on his D-level coach-speak as long as he fields a proper SEC defense in 2017.![]()
I was a Snoop fan. My excitement when we "stole" him from PSU was off the charts. His performance last year was horrible. You may say, But McDad....injuries....assistants not on same page...1st season...blah blah blah. He did more with less at VU and PSU. Beat us twice as Vandy D Coordinator.
As of right now, James Franklin looks like the reason those defenses teams performed so well.
We will see if "no one will run on us" Shoop is hope or hype this year.
I still think Shoop was a great hire. I think shedding the remnants of the BSiA will help Shoop. I think a 2nd year doing things his way without those echoes from the past will help. I think the 7 on 7's will help.
I think it comes down to health and depth. Spring reports were that they liked what they had at LB. Just the names on the list... leave me concerned. DT is a concern simply because of the lack of depth.
You've got an eye for identifying problems players are having. You've earned my respect with that ability.
Shoop is STILL an unknown for UT. He shouldn't be based on performance at other schools. But there were many noggin scratching moments last year. Those moments weren't limited to injury either. Anyone remember App State?
Defense gave up 13 total pts and 292 total yards & pitched a shut out in 2nd half and OT. Not sure how you can complain about App State game. Our poor offensive play made that game close.
FWIW, Franklin is an Offensive guy.I was a Snoop fan. My excitement when we "stole" him from PSU was off the charts. His performance last year was horrible. Because I expect to dominate teams which we recruit superior players across the board.
The only times those teams should score are garbage points late in the 4th quarter.
From the bit of research I have done, that appears to be a pattern with Shoop. It takes a year to adjust to his way.
Granted UT should have been able to stop ASU at will... but UT and Miami were the only two teams to hold ASU under 300 yds last year. They're better than your average mid-major.
Most here argued that Jones should get more time before being judged in his first two years. I would argue that Shoop is FAR more proven as a P-5 DC than Jones was as a P-5 HC.
You can say that all you want (and you will get several LIKES), but Appy State is a good team and our offense was the problem for the Vols on that night. Miami gave up 10 pts to Appy State in the 2nd & early 3rd quarter, but their offense scored early and often.
I watched Shoop's defensive rankings at VU and PSU. MY recollection, which may be inaccurate, is an immediate positive impact at both schools in his first year.
There are ongoing problems in the coaching staff at UT. Starts with CBJ and flows downhill.
I've got 5 losses on my prediction radar this year. And I hope I am wrong.

I have to ask.
What are the ongoing problems with the coaching staff?
Is it 5 specifics losses or just the number? Does that count the bowl game?
I hope you are wrong too.
I'm not so sure "ongoing" would apply to any of that for 121.
