Top punter prospect Skyler DeLong said Thursday that he decommitted from Tennessee and instead committed to play at Alabama, according to Hank South of 247Sports.

Per 247Sports, DeLong is a 3-star player who is the No. 1 punter recruit in the nation, and he ranks No. 1,579 overall in the class of 2018.

DeLong initially committed to play for the Volunteers on June 1 and said the following about his decision at the time, according to Ryan Callahan of 247Sports:

"They offered me and I was really interested. I've been up there a couple times, and I just decided that's where I want to be. I just felt like the time was right, didn't want to wait anymore. It's one of my top schools, and there's not a school that's better out there, so I was just ready."

Wait. No. We've just upgraded the Best Staff in America. How the heck does this happen?

You get weaker every time you post. :)

Throwing up the vol sign?!?

Bama up to 51 on rivals. After results of this weekend we will prob break into top 5 and if we keep building our fence w in state recruits I'll take this loss over a 4 star in state DL. Big Orange time is coming!!! We can get another preferred walk on to punt.

And you really think it will end this way? We are conducting camps as we speak and recruits will be committing soon. We only have 5 as of today, all of them have been invited to the under armor All-American game, how about you guys?

Without judging anything about the boy himself, that quote says a lot. A lot of I and no we. No adults involved? As decision-making process, he repeatedly cites how he "felt" rather than offer objective reasons. In fact, the only "fact" he offered-- "there's not a school that's better out there"--was an empirically unproven statement. And sure enough, after he visited another school's camp, he discovered there are other great programs out there.

Guess he felt like the time was right again. I've known guys who spoke the same way about choosing their wife. Come to think of it, not many of them had a marriage that lasted 4 years.

With all the physics and kinesiology involved with kicking a football, I'm not sure I want someone who tends to take counsel of his feelings handling our punting duties under game pressure. Takes a lot of mental discipline to be a gameday punter or kicker without becoming a head case.

Saban will either change that or sign his transfer papers. Maybe Skyler should take a little detour and visit UTC on his way to Tuscaloosa.

Honestly, this decommitment hurt worse than any others for me.

Say what you want about Butch but he's right about 1 thing, the importance of special teams.

After the QB, imho, the next most important positions are kick returner, punt returner, punter...

This was a tough one...

He's been to Clemson's camp and has an offer. He likes us, he really does.

Ran out of ****s to give! He's a punter! Who cares? We just took D'Andre Litaker from the Tide and with the way things are going, we're probably taking Carvin away from "St. Nick", too. You can have Delong, though. 👍

The logic must sound better coming from you? A cannon-legged punter who can get hang time and distance is worth their weight in gold. A few fans would get that, so congrats. Lot's of punters punt, not all flip field position in the most critical situations in a ball game.

A punter plays 5 plays a game. Not a requirement for a ship. I'm mind ****ed that someone would agree that a punter is in the top three for important positions for a team.

Perhaps if Tennessee ever finds themselves in a big game again, those 5 plays will look a little larger than you just made them out to be?

That's fine, but saying a player is a top three positions for one game is silly. What about the other 13 we played where our dts dominated? My point, there is a reason no punter has made the hall. They are important but not enough to get upset if somebody decommits. We can just get one in Australia.

You don't know THIS one does. Our current boomer was a walk-on...why didn't you snap him up when he was available?
