Is it possible for Tennessee's passing game to be better in 2017?

Well we lost our best deep threat in Malone and Dobbs finally started dropping dimes on some deep passes last season en route to us having statistically one of the the best deep passing games in the SEC in 2016. I'm expecting to see a drop off there at least a bit.

But I do think we'll see a sharper passing game in the short and intermediate passing game overall.

We are getting Tight End recruits looking at us for a reason.

We gotta use them....

I hope that the OW game is an indication.

I believe Callaway will surprise everyone and give us a great trio of receivers. JJ Byrd and Callway

A new QB's best friend is always a good TE to bail him out. It's 82 time!

Wolf is the team's best magician. He'd catch a pass or two in the first quarter and then disappear the rest of the game.

I've often wondered if this is by design on Butch's part. I remember last year saying the same things about Malone. It's like once he got his 5 or 6 catches, he wasn't even targeted for the rest of the game. In fact, if you go back and look at Butch's coaching history, that's the norm with his wideouts (Antonio Brown being the main exception at CMU). Pretty much every other season, Butch's reception leaders have been around the 50 catch mark...

The mid-season will be much better than the beginning. Unfortunately with so many untested players, it is what it is. The season has a rapid maturing effect. Perhaps we can eek out a win at UF and have momentum playing UGA.

Better or worse?

With a new quarterback, a new backfield and a new offensive coordinator, one would think that the passing game is in worse shape heading into the 2017 season.
Time will tell. Expectations certainly aren’t where they were a year ago.
But the quarterback likely will be better protected than Dobbs was last season. Tennessee will benefit from an offensive line that is talented, deep and has interchangeable parts as some players can play multiple positions across the line.

A legit number 2 WR will have to emerge for our passing game to exceed 2016. We got two legit SEC QBs in Dormady and Guarantano. Our O-Line is one of the deepest and most talented in all of CFB so the QB will have time to throw.

If we can get a legit number two WR then our passing game won't miss a beat and possibly even be better in 2017. We shall see.

Doesn't matter. Just play ball and we find out.

Or the defense picks up on it and covers the guy better

I hope the passing game is better, the pieces are there if the players show their potential on the field and the coaches have done their jobs. Its all a waiting game right now but I lean towards being positive and want it to be better.

Inexperienced and unproven QBs + lack of depth and experience at receiver + a line that was bad last year + questionable OC and OL coach hires=???????

Probably look better. Vols will have to get lucky and stay healthy for it to be a surprise season. Otherwise it's going to land where most would expect it too, and the hot seat and firing rumors will heat up. I still think it's a 2 year deal for Jones whether he surprises this year or not. Too many new hires , too many new skill guys, too many convenient excuses to not use them add nausea all year.

As thin as the Vols are at RB, the passing game must improve if the Vols are to contend for the SEC east

on second thought, it may be hard to improve on last years passing stats or points scored......time will tell
Go Vols

"too many convenient excuses to not use them add nausea all year." are the Vols already getting the excuses ready?

I was able to watch Spring scrimmages that Media was not allowed. All our young receivers improved and you know they have talent. We will be better here than most think. QD has a ton of confidence in pocket and control of offense. OL was a mix of players with so many out. But they all looked more physical.

Who among the young players did you like the most?

TE play will help to spread the ball around and make coverage more difficult.

REMEMBER those checkdowns and don't home in on one target!

Not if the Wolf boys show up like little girls again. Softer p!ay by UT TEs I cannot recall after seeing what 120 put on the field.

Yes, it's possible but all this hype about our O-line brings back bad memories. I remember hearing and feeling the exact same pre-season thoughts in the past, going back to Fulmer...only to be hugely disappointed when we started playing actual games. We look good on paper now, just as we did several seasons in the past. I will believe it when I see it.

I have a feeling that QD is not as "untested"in reality as many seem to think. Much of the playbook will be available, game 1. This QB transition is about as good as can be asked for.
If the OL comes together as hoped, then I expect Q to bring some serious fireworks.

I have read all the post above this one and the big question has been ignored. Now maybe it's because the thread centers on offense, but as you say, it will be hard to improve on last years offensive numbers (or success). The big question ( the elephant in the house) is, will the defense improve enough the have a better season?

It simply has to.
