Another questionable quote from Butch today

Go back and read the quote and tell me where he said, "we've competed for national titles?"

He said contend for championships. You completely changed the wording and then bashed him off of something that he didn't say. He has us competing for the division and he will have us competing for it for the duration of his time here. It's not like anybody has run away with the division in years. It's going to be a close race in the East, and the winner, 80% of the time, is going to be from the group of UT, UF, and UGA and will be the team, out of those three, that catches a break here and there. And if it does come to the point were Butch has reached his ceiling then we need to make sure that we have a sure-fire replacement, because Butch has set the bar a lot higher with his recruiting and program restoring.

Needing Florida to lose 2 games in November for us to win the SECe because we already have 3 conference losses before the end of October, is not contending for the division.

I wonder how many on VN could handle the scrutiny of every word you spoke being parsed to the 10th degree. Give me a break. He is answering a question. He is not trying to lower expectations, he is just explaining the obvious: the Vols have improved every year for the past 3 years.

IMO, this year will be our championship year (SEC East). If not, he will face the consequences.

Do you think Tennessee has competed for championships in the Jones Era?
In the sense that every team in the conference starts at 0-0 and is, therefore, a contender, then yes Jones' teams have contended. Last season, they stayed in contention a little longer than previous seasons but in the end it was all for naught. Also, in the sense that most media picked us as preseason favorites to win the East last year, we were deemed contenders. Just need to keep watering that bamboo crop and Rommel will be found someday.

Had Butch not had a history of twisting himself into pretzels trying to lower expectations in his 4 years at Tennessee.....along with claiming that winning the SECe wasn't even a point of discussion last year for him and his team.....a quote like this doesn't so much as raise any eyebrow much less get the attention/criticism it's getting right now. He's earned additional scrutiny with his history of foolish statements imo.

So has the program improved at all since Dooley days? I'm never sure after reading one of these threads.

I agree that he has not helped himself. Maybe he should just stay quiet, but many will attack him either way. I am hoping this year he shuts a lot of people up. In particular much of the media that covers the SEC.

I cannot repeat or repost it. If you click on the tweet, it's right after Chad Hutton's response.

I wonder how many hours this will be discussed on Finebaum today?

edit. Looks like we got lucky that Tony Barnhart is on the mic.

Probably good advice.

There's not a lot he can say anymore that should really matter. The product is there for all to see. You either buy it or you don't. The infomercial years have long passed.

Dan Wolken and most of the media are just looking for clicks as opposed to actually trying to cover the sport. So many know very little about the game. CBJ needed the media when he was starting to rebuild program. Now he just needs to be quiet and shut them up on the field.

Eh. The media gets too much play on this.
Jones is a salesman and did a good job at the beginning with the message. He just seems like he's still trying to sell a vision when that is substantially less relevant.

Which is why your last sentence is sound.

we've been thru this before, so i'm not going to re hash, only to say that once you beat FL and GA, you're contending for the East.

that we didn't win it, has more to do with what we DIDN'T do, than having to count on FL to lose.
