UT gets their bowl rings

Ok...to be fair, I have to retract my opposition to the BoB rings if the event supplied and paid for them. I have no issue with that. If Butch/ UT decided it was something they needed to do, that would be different.

That also casts the MCB ring in a slightly different light in my opinion. I still think a ring for anything less than a Top 5 Bowl, or some type of Championship is a bit silly and millineal....but whatever.

I appreciate this post. :hi:

The rings are just a reward for hard work. Kinda like us adults get.
Scholarships are akin to base pay for showing up to work. The NC is like being on the board that successfully accomplishes a corporate takeover.

Bowl rings are more like a mild raise or profit sharing. The guys worked hard and earned a little appreciation.

So basically, if you're in here whining, give back every small bonus or Christmas turkey you have received at your job or stfu.

Looks like they will be talking about the rings on Full Ride on Sirius - I will let you know. Edit- ok they dogged TN for spending $37,000 on a participation trophy.

$100,000,000 budget and they are dogging UT for getting the players and staff a $250 ring after a bowl win? Lots of bigger fish Full Ride.

Nebraska's MCB rings would be participation trophies. We actually did more than participate, we won the game. Big difference. Imagine had we lost........ See the big difference.

I dont know their names but the one guy said TN is better than that, etc. They said SC gave out SEC east rings the year they won the east and they said they could see why a program like SC would do that.

I think it is fine for bowl game winners and they are only something to put on their mantle. They mentioned Kentucky bought rings after one of their bowls and they lost.

We finaly get back to going to and winning Bowl games and now these guys want to give the team grief for getting rings.

They should come up with something with a little more substance, this feels like I'm bored and working hard to find something to gripe about just to pass time.

Who wants a memento for a game you lost?

Although I usually get a program and souvenir cup for each game I attend.

If you think about it, any bowl game shy of the National Championship is a participation trophy

5-7 teams making a bowl game is beyond crazy

It's a nice keepsake for the players, I guess. When I think of a ring I think championship. To me, this is a little too close to a participation trophy.

i know this won't be popular, but I think they should all get excited about actually graduating from college, too....that's the ultimate participation trophy IMHO

Every bowl gives out rings to the winner. Its not a new thing. The players will remember it forever don't downplay this as a participation trophy. They bust their a$$ all year so we can drink beer and watch on Saturday.

Every team may get them, but seems we're the only ones who do a press release. I can see if every bowl winner gets a ring, but just seems we're not "self aware" from PR perspective on how things look with two rings and no banners.

Why couldn't we have one ring and put Brisol on one side and MCB on other side. I mean, if we won SEC E, lost in championship game and won bowl game, would players have three rings and no conference championship? Jostens gotta love the Vols!

Not saying bowl rings aren't ok, but to me, spending $40K+ on two rings, but are last in Power 5 in # football staffers lines up a little weird.

Did you read that?
They got the numbers from the website, because Tennessee does not list GA's and others on the website doesn't mean they are not there. The current Oline coach was on staff last year but not listed on the website.

NCAA said:
The NCAA did clarify to CBS Sports that their preliminary results with their survey should be taken with “six or seven grains of salt” according to Bob Bowlsby, the chairman of the NCAA Oversight Committee.

Bowlsby and the NCAA told CBS Sports that “the methodology to measure the staff sizes of 127 FBS schools in 2016 came from mere website research.” Which means the NCAA did not contact the schools directly nor did they investigate any of the schools in person.

Tennessee is listed as having 10 on-field coaches, five strength and conditioning coaches, two football operations members, and one off field/recruiting coach. The Vols have no graduate assistants listed in the survey.

I did read it, but went with it since unjustified reports are accepted practice for journalists and many on VN.

While I agree their are too many participation trophys in life. College athletes have been "participating" since Pop Warner at 5 years old. Thirteen years and for most seniors this is their last game in their life. Footballs over for them. I can not imagine you begrudge them a ring. Since many of you do, I hope none of you actually coach and teach otherd kids your attitudes. If you do that's a damn shame.

I'm just gonna get the Real Men umpire to throw the BS flag on your "participation" horse hockey.

Still doesn't negate the fact that it is poor use of funds. No reason we should be spending nearly 40K on participantion trophies. That fact that we like to publicize it is partly why we'll never be taken seriously as an elite football program until we start winning real championships.

I'll make my next donation $40K and mark it to cover these rings and you can stfu.
