Ultimately, isn't that want you want? Champions in the classroom? Sports is just a vehicle for these guys for the years they are here. After they graduate is where the important stuff lies.. right?:thumbsup:

I wasn't being flippant, or silly with my post. I believe this to be the first, minimum expectation of a college football coach...it is COLLEGE football after all.

The fact that you underachieve and lose football games that you shouldn't mean that expectation is magnified. I'm thankful of the improved APR. Butch is to be commended...for this.

I feel you, we could achieve just as much, if not more than what we did last year. I'm really anxious to see this receiving corps with Dormady, and our defense can't get any worse than what it was last year. Lastly, we won't have to pressure-cooking, diamond-forming expectations.

I'm fearful to see which game Butch drops this year. Every year he's been here, we've lost a game we absolutely shouldn't: Vandy '13, Florida '14, Arkansas '15, and the two last year. This year, it could be GT or Carolina again, the latter of the two the more ominous option.

I'm more optimistic about Florida now that we have the monkey off our back, and while UGA should be good on paper, we'll see a good bit of their gameplan as they face Appalachian State, Notre Dame, and Mississippi State leading up to our game. LSU should be nice and worn out by the time they come to Knoxville in November (@UF, Aub, @Ole Miss, BYE, @Bama, Arkansas, then finally us).

There are reasons for hope and reasons for pessimism. 8-4 seems about right to me.

Can't say that's ever gone through my head. If they want to use their free education to actually learn something, I'm all for it. But I can at least admit I understand that isn't why most of them are here. At least the ones that play.

How many 4 star and up recruits do you guys think actually get a job in their major after graduation? Very few, I'm sure.

Do we need a whole bunch of Dexter Manleys representing our University? What is the reason you attend college.Academics should be primary,Athletics secondary.

But I just don't believe you mean that. Your primary interest in UT football has nothing to do with academics.

I'm not trying to tell you what you believe, but that's just how I see it. Most fans would trade a low rank in team grades for SEC championships. Claiming otherwise is disingenuous, IMO.

I graduated from Tennessee Tech in engineering, Suma Cum Laude. I know a thing or two about taking school seriously.

I guess it boils down to, I just don't see the big difference in making A's and barely passing classes in a nonsense major, and in a field they are destined never to work in. Hand wringing about these classes and their grades is just to make the University look good and make y'all feel better. At the end of the day, the ones that want to use their education will, and the ones that don't, won't.

Only a very small percentage of players who play college football get an opportunity to play in the NFL. Most of the young men who play on Saturdays will in fact end up in a different career.

The APR and other measures of education that the NCAA have put in place is to make sure that there is a focus on the academic growth of the athletes and that they are not taking the nonsense major like they have in the past.

It is really sad that you feel the way you do given that you should understand how important a college education is.

Actually non athletes who receive a scholarship do have certain criteria they must meet. Same is true for those that receive the Hope, TN Promise and the new TN Achieve assistance. They have to be making progress - so may hours taken per semester, a specific grade point average, so many hours of community service etc.

Only those that pay their own way can really do as they please and waste their money (or their parent's money).

Just replying to the question that was asked.

Some of you want athletes to NOT be students. But they are students and those that are on full scholarship are given an incredible opportunity to prepare themselves for life after sports and school.

No, some of us realize a lot of the players that sign here are signing here to play football. And some do the minimum in the classroom to stay eligible regardless of whether or not they ever make money playing. That's on them good or bad, no different than those here on academic scholarships.

Spot on.. Just look at the majors that some are taking.. For every Dobbs... There is someone on the only end just here to play ball and hopefully get a degree in something

Urban Studies was the general major football players chose back in the 90s.
