Vols seeing a difference in Butch this spring

The media guys were talking about it last spring-- how Butch looked like a guy who knew he finally had the horses to win. They said he was a different guy from the year before.

I just think the coaches are looser in the spring. Things get real in August.

Link?

Many realist-VOLS or realVOLS for short, are labeled negaVOLS. You are just more realistic than others.... Myself included.

No need for being defensive or worrying about being called a nega. You and Kbvol post thoughtful positive or negative comments as the situation requires. That's the way it should be. Personally I hit "likes" for both positive and negative post, that is if they make sense, whether I agree with them or not. Well thought out posts are what I come here for.

Thanks for your posts.

I think he's done a great job this offseason of hiring the right guys at the right positions and standing back and being more of a program manager. I think his micromanaging style has hurt him in the past. Hopefully it pays dividends this season

Exactly, ive said all along he needs to emulate fulmer. Be the closer in the living room with mommas and daddys, be an excellent face of the program, a players coach and have his one area of expertise to coach up and let the guys who are better at the x's and o's handle the rest. Fulmer built a hell of a career letting chavis and cut be the brilliant minds. Butch needs to do the same because hes finally got some top tier guys around him.

I don't see a control freak letting that happen.

By next spring he will be completely silent and only use hand gestures.

Some of you never disappoint! :) The media and others may have said this last year but the difference is that this was one of the players who is noting the difference.

And you pretend there's a negative in every single post. Chill, dude. Don't try to make a big deal out of everything.

what was so different?

"embracing expectations" doesn't indicate change, just a state of the union.

it's been well chronicled here anyway, the fundamental philosophical and personality flaws he's demonstrated during his time here. and extrapolating how that dynamic might work with all the changes on the staff, especially offensively, if Butch stays the same.

and when "change" was discussed, it was in that vein, not in some window dressing regarding the state of the program.

so i still say that this type of news regarding a change in approach schematically and how he's running practices this year vs. last year (or any other year for that matter) is more significant than anything that's been reported prior.

and, again, i'm not saying that this is indicative of some self reflective process that's lead to some epiphany. nor am i willing to say that it's indicative of anything that will translate to how he makes decisions on game day, game planning or anything else like that.

just an acknowledgement that it is different than what we've seen in the past, and could be a good sign going forward.

the only agenda i'm worried about are those that deal with making the program better. and doing things the same way, with the ceiling we've hit doing it that way, can't be among them.

that has worked up to a point. to get to the next rung on the ladder though, it may take some change.

and one thing's for sure, this off season has had plenty of that.

hopefully it's what's needed to reach that next rung. we'll see.

I was speaking more to the fact that folks have taken a comment by a player and made it into a big deal - taking sides as to whether it means something or not.
