The spring absences of Chance Hall and Brett Kendrick has opened the door some of Tennessee's tackles to play more reps, and Tatum has been getting a handful of first-team work with Drew Richmond operating on the left and prized freshman Trey Smith practicing at both book-end spots.

And Tatum appears to be making the most of it, with Vols' defensive end Jonathan Kongbo backing up Wells's praise of the lanky 6-foot-6 lineman. "He's really mature," Kongbo said. "He put on a lot of weight. He's much more physical at the point of attack. He's been doing a good job in the weight room. He's gotten much bigger than when I last went up against him. When I go in for a bull rush or whatnot, I can tell the difference in his body."

Great we have the depth. I wonder if they will redshirt Tatum and/or Smith if the 3 in front of them stay healthy. Or move someone to Guard.

Didn't Tatum play last year? It would be nice if he could be redshirted--but it probably won't happen. And I'm sure Smith will be playing this year.

Judging by that article, it doesn't sound like they have any plans to RS Tatum now, and Smith is gonna be in the mix for sure.

IMO I believe we'll see the big freshman over on the right side starting at RT before end of year. Next year could be we'll see him and Richmond swap sides as Richmond never played on the left until he got to The Hill and with some vision issues.

So you think he's better than Hall?

I wonder how much Tatum and Brooks weigh now?? We should definitely redshirt Locklear and Calbert. I'm really enjoying having a stable of lineman to play and develop.

The dooley era is officially over!!!

Still hate they burned Tatum's redshirt last year. Especially in a blowout loss.

He played because we literally had nobody left to play. Things like that happened because we had an injury situation that we had not seen before and hopefully never again.
