Retarded and box of rocks are nowhere near the same thing. Exercise your empathy muscles and try to see how offensive it is to use a mental condition that someone has to suffer from as a really unclever insult toward someone who made a dumb comment. I'm often going against the PC crowd, but even I think it's crude at best and hateful at worst to use a really really sad mental condition as a casual insult.

My mother suffers from Alzheimer's. I've seen many make jokes about having dementia, or "old timers" or "your Alzheimer's is kicking in". It doesn't bother me in the slightest because I know the context that it was being used. Glitch was not making fun of mental retardation, he was making fun of posters. It's ridiculous that people have to be so sensitive that they can't look at the context and the person behind the comment. Glitch is one of the best posters here and least offensive.

The term mentally retarded literally means to be slowed in mental development. Mentally handicapped people suffer from a variety of conditions that are more often than not, no fault of their own. Sometimes, there are some folks on this website that seem to suffer from slowed mental development but due to their own inability to let stuff go. If they could state their opinion and move on I would not question their mental state. However, by repeating the same statements over and over again, I begin to wonder if there is some outside stimulus that is temporarily retarding their mental capacity.

The fact that people continue to bring up my post and make me repeat myself over and over is retarding my mental capacity. Could we please stop talking about scenarios were Butch gets fired and start talking about the great things our current players and coaches are doing? Hey we also have a bunch of players participating in pro-day and hopefully will have 3, 4, or more players drafted soon.

Everyone has the right to free speech until you say something that someone doesn't like.

9/10 pro days never helps the players drastically... it's either teams checking off that final box or checking the 3rd strike...

But hey another excuse to cheer on our guys...

Bottom line is this...if you get offended by anything on an internet message board, get a new hobby.

Im super confused what you are asking...? Are you saying who will be the backup to Gaulden at nickel? Nickel and N being the same position....

In BBs post he had Gaulden at SS. I was asking who he thought would be N in that scenario.

Then I said that I think they will keep Gaulden at N, even tho many think that isn't his best position.

I agree with this Jave. I'm FAR from PC, but there are some things I've learned that aren't acceptable to say. I used that term in a derogatory way at work when I was in high school, you know, just kinda something we always said. Well my boss had a son with DS and it hurt her pretty bad.

There are some things that just aren't worth fighting over just because you don't want to bow to the PC police and imo this is one of them. It didn't hurt me to give up using that word in any way shape or form, but it is hurtful to some people when we use it, so why not just throw the word away?

I'm not being judgemental towards those who used it in this thread, just saying it isn't necessary, even though I know you didn't mean it to be derogatory to those with actual mental illness or limitations.

My .02 fwiw

Good post, similar experience for me. People who have mentally challenged kids have a hard enough life without our making light of their kids' conditions.

If you really don't have enough empathy to see that, regardless of context, it's a painful thing to hear for parents of those children, then there's no point in having a discussion.

Thank you. If they think that I don't have family members that have been affected by cancer, disease, and other issues then it is because they choose to think that anyone in this world could possibly be immune to those things. My grandmother suffered through and died of Lou Gehrig's disease. My sister has dealt with multiple sclerosis since she was about 12. Multiple women in my family have fought breast cancer. I used to babysit a young man with autism so his mom could have a break. I have had occasion to say offensive comments from time to time but I would never do so with malice and intent to really hurt someone. I was poking fun at the posters on here that seem to be fixated on negativity recently. I deplore negativity and try to keep myself and my family focused on positive things. If you allow negativity to rule you it is virtually impossible to be happy. There is always something positive to focus on and I try to use humor and levity to achieve that goal. Some folks just want to be negative though and I can't stop them. They can't stop me from poking fun at them either though. So we might just have a Mexican Standoff..... wait.... is that offensive too? Crap. I did it again. :)

See my post. I wasn't making fun of people with mental handicaps. I was making fun of posters that can't seem to get over stuff.

If some of y'all could post numbers in here when you see them that would be appreciated. I'll try to do what I can too.

You're right, there is no point continuing. I have had friends with down syndrome children and they are not offended by lighthearted use of the word retarded. They understand context. Most are less affected by it's use than the feel good crowd. Empathy has nothing to do with it.
