It's not that we disagree about the trajectory, you honestly don't know what I believe about that, because if I did think we'd peaked, I still wouldn't say it. It's that y'all constantly harp on how bad things are...and it's really not that bad. Back to back 9 win seasons for the first time in a while. Beat UF like a drum. Saw some great games. Have an epic QB battle going on between three 4* QBs! When is the last time we had that much QB talent on the team at once? But rather than consider what might go right, you constantly...*constantly*...go on about how bad our coach is and how he squandered opportunity. Maybe he did. Maybe he didn't. I don't know. What I do know is that 9 wins including a beat down of UF and every Big10 team we've played, is much better than 5 wins including a loss to Wyoming.

I was at the NC game in 98. It was a pretty big deal. A good time. Did y'all get there for that one? I'd certainly love to do it again, but not enough to tear down our current coach who is doing a decent, if not elite, job of rebuilding the program that was destroyed by the clown show that ran ripshod through Knoxville. And I'm starting to resent those who would drag us back into the next clown show that might happen if our amazing leadership were to hire another coach. So if I'm a settler because I'd rather enjoy 9 or 10 win seasons year after year rather than risk the highly unlikely scenario where this leadership lucks into the next NC coach, then build me a sod covered cabin on the prairie and call me Ingalls.

Considering last season was the most talented team we've had in 10-12 years and only lived up to that hype for maybe 9 halves of football, won two games on lucky, walk-off plays (App State and Georgia) and we beat two more teams outside the power five, I think it's fair to consider it a disappointment.

I guess I can also understand the people who are pretending we were steamrolling teams before the injuries.

Train wreck in here last night. May take while for the inspectors to figure out what happened. Doubt they will even attempt it. Hope everybody slept it off last night.

IMO - Butch's clock started over with his revamped coaching staff since I believe coaching matters. So the indictment or celebration of his self proclaimed "infallible" system and staff will be at least a couple years out barring a total collapse. If you see the same with him never exceeding expectations and slip-ups against Vandy and he like - he gone. They won't risk the budgetary losses of revenues since it has taken so long to recover from the last mishandling of program decline. Currie has shown no qualms in being confrontational. I am much more confident Butch improves the program from this point if can contain his tendencies to go on communication and other tangents. You know, just coach football.

Unless they agree with you I suppose.

I was simply referring to the fact that the conversation that has been raging in here for the past several days is the same one that was had right after the season. This is probably the third or fourth time it has occurred with the same folks glooming about the future and how Butch is mediocre as a coach. They can disagree with me all they want but they only have to do it once. Everybody acknowledges their opinion and their right to it. When it gets rehashed over and over for days on end then I feel the need to put my two cents in. Your welcome to put your comments in too but if you enjoy reading the same Eyeore posts over and over then I wish you would take the Eyeores and head over to the FF so we can talk about all the possibilities that come with spring football and not have to discuss coaching changes before the season has even started.

Coach Warren article:

Warren, who has coached at Air Force, Nebraska and North Carolina, described his coaching style as energetic. "I'm going to be running all over practice and I'll never shut up,'' he said. "The second thing, it's going to be a tremendous amount of focus on fundamentals and technique.

"They wouldn't be here without the talent. But we're going to refine fundamentals and technique. You've got to have a capacity for boredom if you're going to play for me because we're going to do the same thing every single day. When we get to Saturday, whether you're up 20 or down 20, you're gonna get the same corner play, the same safety play, and we're going to perfect our craft.''

On Justin Martin:
"I see a long, athletic guy that's really, really trying to buy in and really trying to focus on the attention of his position,'' Warren said. "I've challenged him to be a technician. You have length, you have speed and all that, but if you don't have techniques and fundamentals it really don't matter. He's a guy that's really taking that to heart.''

Seriously? Has your account been hacked by bruin or one of the others in his ilk that are just a frigging broken record?

Dang Ziti, don't you know any other song and dance? You are getting as bad as bruin and his peer group.
Definitely not complimenting you here...

Let it go for a while. You have reiterated this ad nauseum.
Please and thank you!

:hi:

I am not one to let an argument drop. I'll reel it in though.

But for the record I'm not predicting 8-4 for us. Not predicting we hire a new coach this winter either. I'm not sure what I am gonna see this season. I like the staff changes and I've always said this would be Butch's most complete team even though we would lose the QB and some other star players from 2016.

Hmmmm...what is that warm sensation I feel?!? Wow...it's...it's optimism!

Coach speak, I know, but it was pretty clear that either fundamentals weren't taught, or the wrong fundamentals were taught. Either way, it's encouraging to hear.

Get out with this optimism. This is the "butch sucks and always will" thread.

We could say that about many threads Glitch. Let me ask you this question? Have we ever signed a recruit from California or the West Coast? It's that simple Glitch.

This is from the Kayvon Thibedoux thread. I didn't want to continue to bump that thread....

Tony, this is exactly why not every kid we offer needs a thread. Yes we have signed kids from California but you yourself admitted that if he doesn't go to USC he will certainly go to another CA thread. So if you want to make a thread from him, why not do it over in the NCAA forum. Then you can discuss him and every little update about him. Then the threads for recruits that UT actually has a chance at can be discussed here in the UT Recruiting Forum. I am sure that you will not take this reasonable solution but will likely expound on how there is always a chance and that we offered him so therefore he needs a thread to be constantly updated every time he says football. Carry on then.

Weird thing to say just because we disagree on the trajectory of a football program, don't you think?

Kind of strange you took it to that point tbh

More than disagreeing on the trajectory. You're already admitting defeat. Even when Dooley was coach, I would still hope for victory. I wouldn't count losses before they happened.

Did we?..where? I didn't see it.

Must have fallen off the wagon for those two games then. Either that or you're being willfully ignorant.

We obviously had more talent on the field in both of those games. But, for whatever reason (be it poor preparation, coaching, locker room discord, lack of faith in the system/coaches, players not in good enough shape to play all out for 4 quarters, maybe all of the above), we didn't take advantage of it.

The injuries were bad, but not bad enough to excuse those two particular losses.

I've said multiple times that I hope I'm wrong and we win big this year. I would love nothing more than to go 11-1 this year and be dead wrong.

The trajectory I have seen over the last 4+ years tells me that more than likely isn't going to happen

I tend to agree.

Last year is a tough one to judge. The significant injuries make it hard to draw definitive conclusions. Sure, before the injuries, we weren't dominating like we thought we would, but we were also winning at the rate we thought we would and we ended the streak with Florida, like we thought we would. As a comparison, Clemson lost to Pitt and had a tough early game with Troy at home, and won the national title - teams may start slow but they can improve significantly over a long season. And the injuries were unbelievable in volume.

On the flip side, you can blame Jones for the injuries because he mishandled the S&C hire - which is fair. So while is in-game coaching is debatable, the S&C hire is not.

But, he seems to have fixed that this offseason and he's changed a lot of things (which means implicitly he accepts the blame).

So, we'll see what happens. We have enough talent for at least an 8-4 season, especially with the schedule laid out as it is. I think that's the baseline. And I think Jones gets it done.

Then in the future, maybe say, "if" instead of "when," when predicting failure.

Using words like retarded to be cute is ignorant.

Eh I don't think it's ignorant because people who say retarded to mean silly or dumb know what they're doing for the most part.

At this point it's basically just a way someone can indicate they disagree with today's overly-PC culture without havinf to go through the trouble of thinking up something clever to say (which is ironic, in a way).

Actually, I would argue 3-0 before the injuries really started to pile up. By the end of the 3rd game we were missing Kirkland, JRM and Cam, right? Am I missing any others?

When the injuries started last year, anyone with a pulse stated (correctly), "there are 4 players on our starting defense that we CAN'T lose...and we've lost 3 of them."

By the end of the year, it was ridiculous. Backup defensive ends starting at DT.

If we go 9-3 this year with this schedule with a new QB I'll be satisfied anything better would be amazing. 8-4 I will be hanging on for one more season since we did have a new QB. 7-5 or worse will be hard to stomach.

@GT (basically)
@UF
UGA
SC
@Alabama
@Kentucky (not a pushover this year)
@Missouri (probably a win but road game could be tricky)
LSU
