Wonder if CFA can start as change of pace back and then be the third down back to catch and block as needed? If Kelly has to do it all then that is going to be too much, I would think. No matter how studly he has shown to be. Do have faith in CFA though. Got too.

I don't see the "change of pace" between Kelly and CFA...similar types (along with Chandler). The change of pace that would be on the roster is Trey Coleman.

I cannot give him that. He is an offensive specialist, and his offense has been complete garbage. It is the weakness of the team.

Eh you could've said the same about Butch in year one and two.

Neither Butch nor McElwain inherited the personnel to run their offenses the way they wanted. Both had to rebuild an OL and find a QB. Butch managed to get his guy on the trail as soon as he got to Knoxville. McElwain had a pretty good young QB on campus when he arrived, but he got busted for using Andro.

IMO this year will be telling about McElwain's prowess (or lack thereof) as an offensive mind. Their OL should be the best and deepest it's been since he got there. He's got at least one great WR (not sure about the other guys yet). His RB's aren't spectacular, but if their OL did a bit more for them, they have some guys who, combined, could really wear down a defense.

Just gotta see if McElwain has brought along any of his young QBs well enough to be difference makers or if they're gonna be stuck with Del Rio for another stopgap year at QB.

A poster on VQ was at practice today and shared his thoughts...

Here are my notes/impressions. I largely watched the offensive side of the ball and focused specifically on QB drills. This may seem a bit scattered but I'll be happy to answer any questions if you have them.

Trey Smith worked as the 1st RT

JG worked as the QB with the ones most of the day it seemed.

Quentin looks like an NFL QB. Really spins it and is consistent for this early stage of spring ball.

Sheriron really impressed me today. Threw a beautiful deep ball. Every rep seemed solid and had a couple spectacular ones. Not saying it's a 3 horse race but there are definitely 3 SEC QBs on the roster.

That's not to slight McBride. Really liked his demeanor in practice. Ball jumps off his hand despite a wonky delivery. Simply looks like a "JV" guy size wise compared to the other 3 guys in the QB room.

JG's temperament was up and down at times today. Fiery for sure. But also missed some easy throws in the flats. Makes some splash plays and everything comes easily to him. Just needs refinement.

Devante Brooks wasn't in pads but looks to have an NFL body. Really impressed with his frame as an OT.

John Kelly is absolutely ELITE. Made our LBs look foolish in tackling drills. Plays with a ton of confidence.

Warrior ran with the 1's all day.

With JJ not dressed out, Marquez Callaway is the best WR on the field right now and 2nd best really isn't even close. Callaway caught everything and looks GROWN.

Light really has not come on for Jeff George like I had hoped. That goes for the entire WR group though. Today it was Callaway and everyone else.

In a 1 on 1 drill, JG threw an absolute seed to Callaway on a Dig Route. Just a laser.

Khalil seems to be moving really well. Can't imagine him missing the GT game.

Jashon Robertson will be a captain. Absolutely crawled the OL for lack of communication leading to a couple protection breakdowns.

Same for Eman Moseley. Constantly encouraging the entire team. Love how he interacts with his teammates.

Rock snapped for the QBs during at least one drill. Really a cool form of servant leadership. Seems genuinely happy to be as Vol. Had a great rapport with everyone on the roster.

Canales is a huge upgrade. Just carries himself like a big time QB coach. QBs are constantly accountable. Noticed them constantly taking reps on air running through run game footwork during downtime between drills. It was impressive.

Josh Dobbs, Josh Malone, Cam, and DB were all at practice today. Speaks positively to the culture Butch has built to see those guys still coming around a Tuesday practice (screw you Travis Haney).

Josh Smith wasn't dressed either and did light work on the side.

Big Shy was in the weight room until the very end of practice but walked out on the the field without any cast/brace or any noticeable limp.

Ethan looks like the 4 year starter he is. Eli caught the ball naturally. I remember one specific rep Eli completely whiffed his block on IZ during a short yardage drill. Austin Pope caught my eye on a couple reps. Coach Scott still spends a good deal of time with this group.

JJ was in shorts and practice jersey but did not participate in practice at all. Interacted with Dobbs Malone and Bob Welton a lot of the practice. Remember him cheering on Jeff George one rep.

Coach Jones came over and joked with JJ that he'd lost a badge now that Tabor ran a 4.77 at his pro day. I laughed.

Go Cubbies! If you don't like the Cubbies, we can engage in fisticuffs at the house of waffles.

Hate Chicago, hate baseball, therefore, hate the Cubbies. However, I'm good with both you and waffles. Seems like a win/win.

On a side note... any game that requires fans to continously explain that it's about the "subtle nuances and artistry" translates quickly to
"It's boring and small people can play it"

LBs whiffing is not something I like to hear with struggles there already. But all else sounds really good. I'm excited for Callaway to get his chance to shine this year.

BRM. Forever.

Well, I do like Joe Morgan, George Foster, Tom Seaver and Dave Concepcion. Pete Rose, not so much.

I liked the Reds when I was a kid and saw a few games at Riverfront. My first MLB game ever was there against the Mets in 1976 or 1977. I believe the Reds won, actually beating Tom Seaver that day.
