Everyone wants to know about the quarterback battle. The reality is that everyone expects it to be a long battle, as we have been saying since the end of last season.
Through two days both Quinten Dormady and Jarrett Guarantano have thrown interceptions and both have thrown some great balls. Both have BIG-TIME arms and that's assumed to be a wash. Guarantano has made some plays with his legs as expected including one on Thursday that went for over 40 yards. Bottom line is that both have had good plays, some mistakes and both are settling in for a long battle for the job.
With Jauan Jennings missing some practice time, the opportunities have been there for the young receivers like Latrell Williams, Tyler Byrd and Marquez Callaway. With a lot of youth at receiver, the tight ends have been a big factor early. As we noted last week in the war room, offensive coordinator Larry Scott likes the tight ends and wants them more involved. Wolf said on Thursday that in 11-on-11 work, the tight ends have had 12-13 catches and only one drop.
On the offensive line there is going to be plenty of competition particularly guard-center-guard spots. That group has gotten off to a good start, but the test comes when pads go on. Line coach Walt Wells is driving home toughness and physicality. Its only two practices and there's no pads, but Trey Smith has done nothing to disappoint and at the tackle spot it's been a good start for Drew Richmond. Remember Richmond and Wells worked a lot together one on one the second half of the season so the Memphis native is very comfortable with his new line coach.
