But it should be understood that without the achievements of the football program and general neyland, the academic side would have continued to be funded at an extremely poor level by nashville as a consequence of the regional bitterness left behind by the civil war in tennessee.
General neyland created a high tide that lifted all boats, academics included, on the hill. Those who used to run the university of tennessee, from dougherty to holt to reese to johnson, understood that history very well and gave the athletic side a proper environment to compete in.
We have lacked that leadership and understanding of the relationship between athletics and academics at tennessee for decades now.
None of that, however, is the fault of mr. Currie. I wish him all the good fortune in the world. Considering the people who run our university, he'll be needing all of that and more.
