John Currie of K State Hired as AD

According to Brice on 104.5 right now, there are several big-time "name on buildings" boosters who have promised to pull their financial support from the AD and have been in the "anybody but John Curry" camp from day one.

And he clarified that the boosters are "6 figures or more" level boosters.

I'm not being a smartass or trying to argue, just asking a question that I honestly have no clue about.

Obviously, losing the money is not good, but that aside, what makes these boosters experts on who is best for running the athletic department? Are they really that qualified? I mean, correct me if Im wrong, which I know you will, but haven't these same boosters been involved with the last two AD's?

Again, I know nothing about all of this and just asking.

Hyams said that Currie was the one that campaigned strongly to fire Fulmer. So I can see your post being right about the boosters that still love Fulmer. Also said he was afraid that Currie was walking in to a hornets nest for the same reason.

I guess my disappointment in the hire is, if your not going with the two main names because of boosters split dont go get someone that can split the boosters.

Edit: Hyams said Fulmer can't stand Currie. So any work/help/fundraising Fulmer was giving UT is over.

I was about to post something similar. There has to be some limit to the influence their money buys

Position filled. What folks were anxious to see happen so get behind him and turn the page. Just like the election. It's over and the results won't be changing.

He was actually hired by Doug Dickey. He took a Kansas State Athe;letic Department that was deep in debt and has made it one of a handful of program in the US that has achieved a profit without a single penny of taxpayer dollars. Doing all of this while the KState program has achieved high academic marks in all sports and has completed $210 million in facilities improvements without using a penny of tax dollars.

And while all that is great Kansas State is athletically an after thought in the Big 12 consistently performing in the bottom half of the league across most sports.

He seems qualified, but his KSU hires haven't really panned out any better than that our recent TN hires.

If there are any rich donors on here pulling there money, let me get 4 seats in the club or skybox for one game. Ive always wanted to sit up there, just once.

I'm just throwing this out as a possibility.

It may not be ones wanting a certain person hired, it may be those who just really dislike this particular guy.

I don't know him but several said that he has a very brash personality.
Could even be people he severely upset before they were big boosters.

As soon as you walked in you would just say the view sucked. :)

I keed I keed.

The view never sucks at Neyland Stadium. I will say though, ive heard people say they prefer being amoung the crowd, and im still on of those that loves being amoung the crowd. Id really just like to experience the amenity and such just once.

Yea Hyams mentioned this and said his weakness was people skills. Let the clichés roll. Lol

I'm just over here trying to figure out how much of these negative comments are made up from people who are just pissed that we didn't hire Blackburn/Fulmer. It's hard to get any objective evidence on this hire

Yea, and maybe they are as qualified as anyone else, I just don't know and curious how concerned I should be about their opinion, aside from their donations.

So he's good with the business/donor side of things, but questionable on the coaching decisions. He fired Frank Martin and hired Bruce Weber- not a good look. He didnt have to do anything terribly important with the football program, besides some necessary facility upgrades (which, by all accounts, were planned well before he arrived) - with Snyder at helm the football program practically runs itself.

Cant find any reasons to be excited about this hire, seems to be par for the course for UT. Sure he has UT connections but he was also Hamilton's right hand man. Big red flag if there ever was one.

Ill crawl back under my rock now...

I don't know anything either Behr, just sharing information. Had no idea there was anyone opposed to Currie.....recall his named being mentioned awhile back briefly, but then nothing. There was obviously also a "anybody but Blackburn" faction as well which is just crazy imo, so who knows.

Blackburn is a lesser version of Currie - Tennessee roots, successful as associate AD and moved to another job as head AD to get experience.

Currie did it at KState. Blackburn did it at UTC.

Currie has raised literally millions of more dollars, negotiated contracts worth literally millions of more dollars, and has built facilities that cost literally millions of more dollars than Blackburn.

This is a slam dunk hire.

Am looking forward to in depth resume of what you seem to already know.
