Even Shannon Terry admits the Haney story was bad form:

Here were my issues with the story...

1) too many unnamed sources.
2) poor message board support by the author in the hours and day post story
3) 247 national editorial didn't have enough experience to release a story of that capacity -- it is not what we do!

I expressed those concerns and shut it down. I apologized to John on the way we handled it post mortem. There was no need to apologize for the story itself to John, because he was all for it. That is all I could do. I have to assume the ramifications were too much for him to handle.

Of course, he says that now. I'm sure he was gung-ho about getting it published in the first place. The guy is a huge Alabama fan, after all.

You would get sued.

Since scholarships are awarded on an annual basis, non-renewal of them would be a huge deterrent for such inane actions. As a student athlete, you represent your university when on the court/field/etc. The platform in which these protests are being staged are provided by the university, so act appropriately. Feel free to protest any way you want when not representing the university.

Same holds true when you're representing your employer (I.e. Pro athletes).

It's the idea of it. No respect. Some people don't care about that. Some do. Just try and imagine instead of running down our country he's doing something that disrespects something you hold dear allegiance to.

He's taking a knee. If someone wants to ignore something I care dearly about, let them go ahead. Silent protests are my favorite kind: they're easily ignored.

I'd much rather someone do that than protest in a way that might actually inconvenience me (marches, public gatherings, etc.).

The only reason it became a story is because the 24/7 news outlets need something to fuel the cycle of outrage that people are all too willing to get sucked into nowadays.

I just don't care that much about what other people do if it doesn't directly harm me. It makes him a bad and/or unintelligent human, but if I got mad at every bad or unintelligent human, I'd be mad my whole life. Can't stop to throw stones at every barking dog, as someone famous surely said.

You can make a strong argument that the nature of college athletics and players being student athletes means they're representing their university 24/7. They're never really off the clock of working to fulfill their contract with the university.

If some players wanna take a knee, the smartest move for the school is probably just to roll their eyes and give one of this bs public statements about allowing students their right to free speech even if their words don't condone the thoughts of the university blah blah blah.

Some people will complain of course, but unless the product on the field is no good the stands will be just as filled and the university will continue to bring in their revenue.

Try to silence them and you have a potential Mizzou situation from a few years back where no one really comes out a winner.

Hard to beat Brent's 20+ years of experience and connections in the business.

Brice was challenging that with his work ethic and connections. That story screwed him as long as he had 247 in his signature. It sounds like Terry had to have meeting with Butch and prominent boosters and face some heated wrath

Was prob gung ho until it cost him a top talent and he caught all kinds of hell from big wigs in college football. He claims Haney snuck that one by him as he would never have allowed such an article because his site doesn't do stories like that with lack of resources. He said Haney has been specifically told to never do a story like that again on his site

I realize some people don't care. That's fine. Some people feel while peaceful and quiet it's a still a slap in the face of America. He can do whatever he likes, but I don't feel anyone is obligated to simply admire his protest style and refrain from blasting his stupid opinion. I don't advocate starting a counter protest and wasting energy on that stupidity, but I do believe it more than warrants a good old fashioned verbal rejection at the least.

Who said this part Gucci??

"This is very typical of the type of behavior we have dealt with the past month. A man gets a lot of courage behind a keyboard and/or after 10:00 at night.
Again, I have no personal and professional issues with John. I treated him well during his time at 247 -- certainly much better than he treated our team. He didn't like it at 247 and that's fine, but there's a professional way to handle things."

That's Shannon Terry.

It would be awesome if every Tennessee fan canceled their 247 accounts until they did a much bigger public apology.

I get that Terry apologized, but the story by Haney went national and if they're going to say they *****ed up they need to make sure everyone knows that. Not just Tennessee fans. That's the kind of article people are going to use against us in recruiting. If terry and Haney agree it was a mistake, then they need to give butch an article/story that he can use to counter those assertions.

I am not sure. If they do, I would be surprised if it is not challenged at some point.

I know many had hoped the NFL would follow suit of the other professionally organization.

Playing college athletics is a privilege not a right so I don't think mentioning the ACLU would be relevant. Schools have the right to layout guidelines for their athletes.

Yup. I'm cancelling. Can't stand Rucker and Ryan is a wimp. Sounds like the downfall started with the Haney article.

Hi everyone. I haven't ever been on the boards much, but I just wanted to clarify a couple of things on behalf of my husband.
First and foremost, the 247 govols team is incredible, and I encourage you all to hang in there and support them as they go through this. They are a great group of guys, and some of John's closest friends. They will continue to deliver, I'm sure of that. Don't give up on the site and on them.
While I've sat in the back seat and watched this play out, I've not agreed with many of the ways that things have been handled. I am naturally a very private person, so I've kind of just sat back and tried to be supportive however I can. However, lines like "A man gets a lot of courage behind a keyboard and/or after 10:00 at night" walk all over me. Most sportswriters in this industry are late night people, and anyone who knows John knows that he writes at night often because he is so busy during the days. I'm not exactly sure what that line meant, but it's those types of things that are unnecessary. I've already called John this morning about his Twitter header... because that's the type of thing that is unnecessary as well.
In all reality, though, these past few months have been really hard on both John and I personally. He has dealt with some health issues on and off for the past few years, and his drive to work and be competitive in what has become an increasingly difficult industry and environment have really taken a toll. It's just time for him to take a step back for a while and reevaluate what's important in life.
Thank you all for your support, and again, please remember the guys that ARE still here. This is their passion and their livelihood.
Take care,
Jessica Brice"

Who is "Lucky?" Is he someone with 247 or is he just a poster?
