13 SEC running backs to watch and zero Vols??!!

I've got mixed feelings about Hurd.

He was fun to watch and I thank him for that but the way he ended it was out of line.

I'd have had more fun watching him if half his runs didn't wind up two yards or less or if he'd ever actually broken a decent run. On balance, he was pretty meh.

Actually no. Began the season as third string, but wound up getting a lot of playing time the second half of the season due to Hurd's dismissal and Kamara's injury. Started vs Tenn Tech and split time with Kamara the last 5 games of the season. He was actually our leading ball carrier 4 times last year and our second leading ball carrier a couple other times.

So no, he wasn't our "3rd string mop up guy". That being said, he's gonna open the eyes of some analysts and media guys this year imo. We all know what we have in Kelly, they don't seem to yet.

The positive folks need to be careful with this argument as it may lead to a discussion of CBJ misuse of a guy that is now being taked about as a potential first round pick.

656 career touches and his longest play from scrimmage was only 48 yards.

I get that every fanbase tends to romanticize their players. We all do it. It's the nature of being fans. It's hard, if not impossible, to look at things with unbiased eyes.

But it genuinely surprises me how some UT fans still romanticize Hurd after the way he screwed the team over. At this point, I would think that biased eyes would be extra critical of the guy.

I'd have more faith in our upcoming running game if Butch had jettisoned our current RB coach in favor of a better one.

With us breaking in a new QB Kelley will be getting a lot of touches. I expect him to have well over 1,000 yards this year.

Good. Hope we're not preseason ranked either. Give the boys a chip on their shoulder. Butch needs to get boys playing like they have something to prove.

Heard Hurd was trying to come back to UT. Apologized to all the coaching staff willing to start from the bottom of the depth chart and give up scholarship.

...Kelly not being on the radar at this point is not really a concern for me.

Yes to this! I hope everyone is asleep when they play our VOLS and wonder who that Kelly guy is running it down and around their throats.

Why? Did Cal and Ohio State turn him away? He lost us the SEC East with his antics in Columbia. No telling how much else he cost this team by bad mouthing coaches behind the scenes. Playing football at the University of Tennessee is an honor and he treated it like it was owed to him. We were the laughing stock of the CFB world when he walked away, have no desire to be it again for letting him come back.

There are other questions on the team. IMO, there are questions on the coaching staff. Kelly isn't much of a question mark. He had the 2nd highest yds/carry of any UT back in the last 10 years at least. The biggest question about Kelly is why he didn't get more touches earlier.

Did you hear that here? It's going to be a worse look on UT and Butch if this is even a remote possibility.

If Hurd really asked to come back and became a walk-on, then it would be a great addition to the offense.
Everyone makes mistakes. I have a son about the same age as Hurd, if he made a mistake at 20 that did not break a law I would hope it would not be held against him for the rest of his life.
None of us know all the circumstances. What we do know is he is an elite athlete and playmaker.

Kelly gets hurt and you're relying on freshmen

Why doesn't ESPN give us a "RB to watch" list where they list RBs who are NOT on the radar, but are going to shock us all and become SEC household names after this year. Geeeesh, anybody can pull a stats list then build a "ones to watch" based on that?

Give us something of value. Where was this type article on ...

Jalen Hurts last Feb?

The Louisville QB last Feb?

Fournette a few years back

Johnny football BEFORE his Fr year

Etc etc etc

I'm not demanding prophetic accuracy. Just do some leg work and take a real chance.

Kelly is a perfect example of this. But, you have to actually do some research, which these guys can't. Everybody on Rocky Top knows JK is gonna explode in 17'. Plus his offensive line is predicted to peak as well, which will distort that breakout even more.

If you just crunch past stats, then JK just looks pedestrian. We know what's coming. Few outsiders do.

In fairness, Lamar Jackson had a ton of hype coming into the year. The 2015 MCB opened some eyes.

And Fournette had a lot of hype coming out of high school.

What was fun about watching him run into the backs of O linemen or getting caught from behind by DEs?

Nah, not that. So often he would break a tackle just to get back to LOS and break another one to get his 1.8 yards. Then on the next play(usually just to the other side) the play would work and he would get his 4.

I was disappointed to hear that our line stopped blocking for him.

I predict Kelly will have about 900-1000 yards putting him about 6th or 7th in the SEC in rushing yards. I think he is a very solid back but no Chubb or Kamara.
