Post NSD Two-Deep heading into 2017

Yeah, Kamara and Kelly are shiftier and quicker off the burst, but Hurd was good. Shame on our coaches for not using him properly as a power I back. Its their prerogative to do so, but to say Hurd was not good is not fair to the guy.

Wasn't sure how you were going to flip my comment into "shame on the coaches" but had faith you would lol.

Season before last, I believe he gains more yds in a different style. Last season, once they figured out to wrap his lower legs, and still no holes regardless of formation, I think he was going down. That's just my opinion but re-watching games, there was an obvious Achilles for tripping him.

Back when they tried to meet him with a traditional tackle, no doubt he was dangerous.

Not a knock on your comment, just reality. We had a dominate 5 star in state player that we didnt maximize, for whatever reason.

I don't ever argue about what system he would have performed best in.
Understand both sides. You don't change your entire scheme for one player, OTOH, you adjust to what you have. Both make sense to me.

But he was on a record-setting pace, even in the system he was in. He may have gained more yards in another (not debating that), but there was an obvious production drop off when they changed their style of tackling him.

Looked like the exact same scheme you use for fighting or anything else. When facing someone large, take them down from the lower legs. I wondered that from year one, but was happy that idiots kept trying to hit him head-on for so long.

If your starter,Kelly, goes down in spring ball, having someone behind him with meaningful experience would be a good starting point.

I agree that would be a good thing.
What you keep leaving out - With your 2 starting backs leaving in the same year, the only way to have more experience behind Kelly, was to play the 4th string back..

It just wasn't going to happen.
Doesn't matter if we knew they were both leaving, doesn't matter if we had more running backs. There's only one football, only so many running plays.

Based on what? We'll have neither top line talent nor championship depth in 2017. We'll have a lot of talented players with potential, only a handful of which have proven to be good to very good SEC players to date.

We'll start a new QB, we'll go into the season with no #1 WR (can Jennings be that? To be determined) and virtually no returning WR production beyond Jennings.

Until further notice our OL is still a porous group no matter who we put out there....we have bodies, but no dominant linemen, at all. TE is average at best with Ethan Wolf and nobody behind him has any experience. I think we're good at running back with Kelly, but there's nothing proven behind him...I think Chandler will be special and that CFA can be solid, but neither is "championship depth" at this point to be sure.

And what of the defense? We lose our two best DEs, one of which was a program all-time great, and our best corner off what was the 95th best defense in the country last year....who are the returners this year who are proven "top line" talent and who, at any position, showed last year that they can be "championship depth"? DKJr is arguably our best returning defensive player and he still has much to prove that he's the player we all thought he could be after his freshman season. We're a mess at corner, have questions at safety, will replace our two outstanding DEs with talented potential guys, yet still very unproven. And until proven otherwise, DT is still a huge question mark.......will Tuttle ever be the same/reach his potential after consecutive season-ending injuries, is KMac healthy and/or still a project despite his initial ranking, can Alexis Johnson play, is Kongbo good enough/bought in to play DT? Only Vickers, a solid, yet pretty average, reliable player, can be counted on at this point imo.

We have a great punter, a great kick returner (assuming he comes back fully healthy) but we're below average at placekicker. And then there's Butch Jones, who tends to put the team behind the 8-ball due to his poor game day management.

I know your schtick is to do the whole grandiose, hyperbolic "we're going undefeated and winning everything this year", but please give it a rest. There is at a one time a lot of hope for the new season but also a ton of holes and questions position to position in 2017...... as things stand today, it's not legitimate to suggest or state that this is a championship team, especially with how we saw things play out in 2016, when one could actually make the case it was at least a Divisional "championship team".

Your negative spin to everything is getting old. Give it a rest.

As long as team 121 stays relatively healthy they will win at least 10 games and the SEC East.

That is Butch's fault.

CFA should have gotten some more carries against the likes of Tennessee Tech and anyone else we were blowing out.

Again, everyone knew Hurd and Kamara would not be here.

That's the problem. Other than TN Tech, we didn't have trash time in any other game last year. Had to fight tooth and nail to get past App State and Ohio, which should have been trash time after five minutes into the second quarter in both games.

You're right. But that is on the HC.

Other than UF, last season was essentially a disaster.

Would be nice if Richmond would show up so could RS Trey Smith!

It will all come down to QB play though, and that could be great or.....??!!?? :dunno::dunno:

.
I'd like to see the best five on the o-line, if that means some changing positions then so be it. Smith and Richmond at OT, Hall and Jones at OG, and Thomas or Robertson at C.

Yeah i agree, i dont know what all was behind it, just view it the same way every other outsider does.

If they were smart they would start trey at RT until he adjusts to the SEC then swap him and richmond. Why place a weaker talent at RT just so you can have a better 2 deep at LT. All that will happen is the other team will put their best rusher on the right and let the new starting QB see what is coming for him every snap.

He won't show because he is not a D1 OL. Trey Smith is a guard and could be a great one before it's over. Kendrick and Hall should be the starting tackles and then it gets interesting because does Butch start Smith over 2 other returning guards and does CT poor play in 2016 follow him and cause Butch to move JR to center. Only the shadow knows😀

Also Josh Smith starts over Byrd and Todd Kelly stays at strong safety. Praying Tiuttle gets back.

It should be an interesting spring for seeing our guys compete in the OL -- glad T. Smith and Locklear are here for that -- and of course it will go on in August.

I reckon they will put the best 5 on the field, but the next 3 or 4 better stay ready.

I'm betting you are wrong, we'll see next season.

He might be in the top 10 by the end of the season, but with all of these guys returning, that's going to be a tough top 10 to crack.

Nick Chubb
Sony Michele
Darius Guice
Ralph Webb
Bo Scarbrough
Trayveon Williams
Benny Snell
Damien Harris
Kamryn Pettway
Rawleigh Williams

U gotta give him a chance. All these other guys have started

think trey smith won't redshirt? i know they say he's college ready but it couldn't hurt to get a year to grow. especially with the new strength coach. and you gotta think richmond would improve this year right? Might as well redshirt but be ready to pull if we need it imo

If he's one of the 5 best linemen, put him out there. Rock has already said he's ready physically and that's usually the hold back for a freshman lineman.

I'm not sure why the obsession with experience or carries for a RB. If they are talented they can play as a true freshman, it's not like QB or left tackle.

Well he did run in the same offensive scheme for 2 1/2 years and did pretty good. Could it have been better out of the I, maybe. But not sure we miss used him for the time he was here. Wish he could have gotten better advice from an adult on how to handle his Jr year.

Now that we know who will be on the team in 2017, how do you think the depth chart will shake out?

Here are my predictions:

(Offense)

QB - Jarrett Guarantano (RS Freshmen) / Quinten Dormady (Junior) OR Sheriron Jones (RS Sophomore)
RB - John Kelly (Junior) / Ty Chandler (Freshmen)

WR1 - Jauan Jennings (Junior) / Marquez Callaway (Sophomore)
WR2 - Brandon Johnson (Sophomore) / Latrell Williams (RS Freshmen)
WR3 - Tyler Byrd (Sophomore) / Josh Smith (RS Senior) OR Jordan Murphy (Freshmen)
TE - Ethan Wolf (Senior) / Jakob Johnson (Senior) OR Austin Pope (RS Freshmen) OR Eli Wolf (RS Sophomore)

LT - Trey Smith (Freshmen) / Drew Richmond (RS Sophomore)
LG - Jashon Robertson (Senior) / Venzell Boulware (RS Sophomore)
C - Coleman Thomas (Senior) / Riley Locklear (Freshmen)
RG - Brett Kendrick (RS Senior) / Jack Jones (Junior)
RT - Chance Hall (Junior) / Marcus Tatum (Sophomore)

(Defense)

DE - Jonathan Kongbo (RS Junior) / Kyle Phillips (Junior)
DT - Kendal Vickers (RS Senior) / Shy Tuttle (Junior)
DT - Kahlil McKenzie (Junior) / Alexis Johnson (Senior)
DE - Darrell Taylor (RS Sophomore) / Austin Smith (RS Sophomore)

LB - Daniel Bituli (Sophomore) / Cortez McDowell (Senior)
LB - Darrin Kirkland Jr. (Junior) / Colton Jumper (Senior)
LB - Todd Kelly Jr. (Senior) / Quart'e Sapp (RS Sophomore)

CB - Emmanuel Moseley (Senior) / Baylen Buchanan (Sophomore)
CB - Justin Martin (Senior) / Cheyenne Labruzza (Freshmen)
NB - Rashaan Gaulden (RS Junior) / Marquill Osborne (Sophomore)
FS - Micah Abernathy (Junior) / Stephen Griffin (Junior)
SS - Nigel Warrior (Sophomore) / Evan Berry (Senior) OR Maleik Gray (Freshmen)

(Special Teams)

K - Aaron Medley (Senior)
P - Trevor Daniel (RS Senior)
KR - Evan Berry (Senior)
PR - Tyler Byrd (Sophomore)

Looks like a SEC Championship Roster. Experience and talent throughout the board. Just need to stay healthy and Guarantano needs to play up to his potential. If that happens I can see us going 10-2 OR 11-1 and being in Atlanta with a legitimate chance of winning the SEC Championship.

Thanks for this. Would be great to see these cats in a real, live SCRIMMAGE at the O&W game...yes, a GAME. Butch needs to lose the weird promo-circus and play a damn real football game again at the end of spring practice.
