Opposing coach: Alvin Kanara was a great back and he was totally underutilized at TN. Probably cost him millions. Would they do the same to you?
Tennessee coach: It's not bad having two to three good backs to share the load. Takes some of the wear and tear off your body and reducing risk of injury. You know backs have only so many hits they can take in a career.
Another thing that's sure to help us on the recruiting trail:
Under-Utilized At Tennessee, Alvin Kamara Is A Top RB In 2017 NFL Draft

And that was my point. He compressed his thoughts into a quote he thought he would make a good soundbyte. Herman was speaking off the cuff and it didn't make a good headline quote or tweet.
The 247 guys said Butch said the same thing on signing day, but the didn't report on it. Then he said it 2-3 times at the signing day celebrations (ironically followed up by a video hyping the top 100 players they got), so they kind of had to report it.
For better or worse, it seems like Butch wanted that quote in headlines. Likely because he knows that recruits and their families don't see things quite the same as fans and pundits
I guess it comes down to who is the better salesman.

Recruiting is a nasty business, they could throw Debord under the bus if they chose. "Old school power back coach, just look at Kelly. Now coach Scott, he has a great mind for versatile backs".
It's recruiting. It doesn't have to be true but I guess it could be.
A 2016 F-150 is easier to sell than a 1990's Tempo regardless of the salesman. 10-2 would have made this a whole lot easier to sell. Letting Mushamp shut you down and costing you the East in the process makes it a lot tougher.
Problem with that approach is it comes across as excuse making. They can however point to the post Hurd part of the season. If I were a recruiting I would rather have honesty. I would want Butch to say we tried way too hard to make Jalen Hurd happy. We learned a valuable lesson that no player, regardless of his stars is more important than the team. That was my mistake and I won't let it happen again.
161 touches when factoring runs, receptions and punts. 1150 yards and 13 touchdowns.
I took out Bama and South Carolina games due to injury. I see your point but you really cut numbers down and included games he either didn't play or was injured.
