It hasn't. McIlwein is not exactly setting the world on fire in recruiting and UGA almost always out-recruits UT, and I see no evidence yet that Smart is any better of a HC than Richt was.

FL just had a top 10 class, so he's doing better than Butch... I think GA will be the clear #1 to beat with Chubb and Michel coming back along with a experienced QB... I think UT and FL are a tossup for second. If we stay healthy we still have enough talent to push.... We have GA at home. Unless we get some DT's, WR's, and the secondary cleaned up, this will be our last chance for a while....

:lolabove: Oh, OK. You are going to play semantics to try to wiggle out of what you said.

UT had been "devastated" by injuries the previous two years. Do you not remember the high number of losses during the previous August camps? Jones said he had the issue studied and didn't find anything that needed to change. So he kept the same S&C staff. One change he did make and marked it up to having a more mature team was to soften up August... a lot. If you want to see Hurd's attitude being warped... go back and see the reports of Jones letting him and others give themselves days off for rest in August.

You of course are trying to use a deceptive tactic (read "lie") to evade hard facts. I was neutral on Jones when he was hired. I have praised Jones for things he's done well. But he has earned every single word of criticism I've posted about him with HIS BODY OF WORK.

How is he making excuses when we beat Georgia the past two years. Lost by 3 his first two years, and played Florida closer his first 3 years and finally won after over a decade. When you lose over 50% of defensive production... you're probably in trouble . His body of work is impressive considering where Tennessee was in 2013.

Until he proves he can beat Muschamp that's where he sits imo

Stop disrespecting my school fool. I swear half the people on here don't even know who this guy is but they are willing to jump on board with his predictions. Then you have another sports analyst say Tennessee's recruiting class was good or predicted finish of top 2 in East and he's labeled a fool. Stop disrespecting this program with all the negatives.

Who cares who the clear number 1 pick is. We were clear number 1 pick last year and look what happened. Nobody can predict injury, costly turnovers, or bad calls by refs or coaches (Actually we can predict bad calls by cbj). With this being said lets hope for the best and look forward to another season. Remember it's just football there is a lot more important things in life (it took my 6 year old child to be diagnosed with brain cancer to realize that). GBO

Who is this guy anyway? Georgia will be the sexy preseason pick, but when was the last time that the clear preseason pick actually won the east? Everyone keeps talking about this recruiting class, but generally a group of freshmen don't lead a team to a championship. Butch's best recruiting may have been Rock and coach Warren. I'm glad everyone is counting us out already. We tend to play better under those conditions.

UT's most talented team in more than a decade needed a miracle Hail Mary to beat Smart's first UGA team... but you see him as no better than Richt? That's a bit premature don't you think? I mean folks like you said Jones had to have at least 4 err... 5 err... 10 years before making an evaluation, right?

Lost to Vandy in his first year. That was your benchmark for Butch failure...what changed? :)

Funny how Georgia polls so well every year. They have potential, but they also went about 10 points from not getting a bowl game. Forgive me if I put them in the "show me" category at this point.

Sure they did. Florida went to Baton Rouge as underdogs, with 7 starters out and beat a very good LSU team to win the division....all while Jones was crapping the bed vs SECeast bottom dwellers SCar and Vandy.

Actually, Guice ran to the wrong side on the goal line at the end of the game that would've absolutely been a game winning touchdown.

Only reason I give them that is because of the following

Returning Chubb and Michel
Eason has a year more experience
There Oline was young last year. A year more experienced
Bringing in some great talent with this years class
Probably should have beat us last year
Floridas D will be down, so Georgia should beat them
They should handle the rest of the East outside Tn and FL

2015:
East Carolina by 7pts
Kentucky by 5pts
Tennessee by 1pt
Vanderbilt by 2pts
Florida Atlantic in OT by 6pts
2016:
Vanderbilt by 7pts

3 lives left.

Hate Butch for blowing his chances sure...but McElwain isn't setting the world on fire with inching out some of these games with all the remaining superior recruiting class rosters of Muschamp...I'm just saying.

I agree to a large extent. The last 2 Florida teams under McElwain haven't exactly been the Spurrier teams of the 90s, no doubt about that. Yet, he's found a way to represent the SEC East both years in the SECCG when he wasn't expected to...at all. And as some of the players move along from the Muschamp era rotate out of the program, it looks like maybe he's doing enough with the last 2 classes, including a top 10 class this cycle, to sustain some success, since he's clearly a much better coach down there than Muschamp was. We'll see. Hopefully he falls flat on his face

Objection your honor....speculation.

All I know is that they limped into Baton Rouge and beat a very good team to clinch the East.....while we got our ass handed to us by lowly Vanderbilt....after getting handled by a highschool senior qb and a bad head coach in South Carolina a few weeks earlier coming off a bye week.

Well they weren't going to pick UT to win the East next year with a freshman QB. Lost some key pieces, so I can see where there isn't going to be much love for Tennessee going into the year. May be for the best. They didn't handle the expectations well anyway.

Yeah I was waiting to see if someone understands this...freshman QB always knocks you way down the ranking order. And it prob should. Of course you're assuming JG wins the battle but that's certainly not a done deal...
