You know how those classes turned out yet still want to stay in this path? Really?

I have no idea what you are talking about.

just making the point that "on paper" does matter to some extent.

If we finished with Alabama's recruiting class most of us would feel much different than we do now, even though it just "on paper" - not sure what is so hard to understand about that.

I'd like to think this goes a couple of ways...both of which are good...JG or QD ball out and we win 9-10 games next year...or we go 5-7 or worse, fire CBJ and hire Chip Kelly. But with our luck if the latter happened, calling it now, Kelly will end up at A&M or perhaps AZ or AZ State, and we end up with table scraps (e.g we'll hire some MAC coach).

Dooley's 2012 class was arguably better on paper: had a better average and more 4 stars (using Rivals - have not looked at other sites). Also ranked 6th in SEC v. 7th for 2017.

Dooley's 2011 class was better on paper - better average, more 4 stars, and ranked 6th in SEC.

Dooley's 2010 class definitely better on paper - better average, had at least one 5 star, more 4 stars, ranked 5th in SEC.

Arguably Butch;s one clear advantage over Dooley was recruiting - that is gone now. Looks like the legacy class blinded many to Butch's true recruiting power.

I see no reason to think the UTAD will move to fire Butch Jones unless he doesn't make a bowl game next year. They're fine with second tier as long as the stands are full. 6 wins, he may get canned, 7 they may think about retaining him, 8 wins he gets a contract extension and a raise , maybe a statue. Fix the administration first. Then things may get better.

I believe this is 100% accurate

Why are people so in love with Chip Kelly? He did horribly at Philly & at S.F. He ripped the NFL teams rosters and filled it with a bunch of poor players.

Because some VN folks take every opportunity to denigrate the coaching staff at Tennessee. They want CBJ to fail & whine, moan, etc. at every opportunity. Chip Kelly's star flamed out when he left Oregon. :whistling:

Team recruiting rank is meaningless. I think it would be great to fininish 14th on the field.

Team recruiting rank is meaningless. I think it would be great to fininish 14th on the field.

The rub there is that the Vols are in the SEC. So having the 14th best roster in the country will most likely get you to 3rd in the East and maybe 7th overall in conference which then translates to maybe 22ish nationally. So Outback Bowl is the ceiling unless you have several Cam Sutton sleepers and a coaching staff that can “coach ‘em up.” The good news is that your roster will be better than anyone you play in that level bowl because your national ranking is depressed from having lost 3-4 games in conference. So assuming Butch can continue to get them prepared to play post season we may win a number of bowls in a row but still finish a spot or two below a Big 10 team we beat by 30 in the final poll. :loco::)

If it makes you feel better, 247 has us ranked 17. We haven't pulled a surprise 4 or 5 star in a couple years. We've been plowing along with mainly 3 stars the past two recruiting classes. This will get us 6 or 7 wins, but won't allow for us to compete for SEC championships.

Big time recruits want to go to big time programs in the now. Butch had great recruiting success because we were on the up and up and could possibly make a move. This last season gave a whole lotta ammunition to other coaches to dissuade recruits from coming to Rocky Top. Jalen Hurd leaving was huge. Why on earth would the star running back that was virtually one of, if not the, face of the team decide to transfer mid season? How did Tennessee possibly lose to South Carolina and Vandy w/ all that talent? Recruits see that stuff. Red flags, alarms, whatever. Now that Butch has proven to make in game mistakes and no longer can fall back on recruiting, he better pray for a miracle season. And this is coming from a Butch Jones fan.

Not great but solid. Needed a blue chip RB, got one. Needed quality help at DT, got it. Needed a blue chip MLB, got one. The number one OT this year and a top five OT coming in next year. The sky aint falling.

You have to understand Tennessee athletics. We have cheaped out ever since Fulmer. We have brainless people running things. Expect another year of 7-8 regular season wins, more SEC west losses and another weak B10 bowl game. Tennessee is now firmly entrenched in mediocrity. It is what it is. We just have to accept it.

I think the majority of us are lined up in these 3 posts.

We are ok, better than average, can't tell the future but sure remember the past 10 years and the last few being and feeling a little better than we have had. Problem being we remember the 90's and early '00's and we want that back.

We're not there yet, we thought this past year was maybe our year, it wasn't, and now, we know it's going to be a harder task than last year to get the SECE.

Maybe it's not our current coach that will achieve, but, things are better than they have been and we're just on that tipping point of taking flight, floating, or sadly, fallen. If not Butch, then at least the next guy has it better than when Jones came in.

Our administration, or castration, limits and causes detriment to the face of the University, which is Volunteer Football. Great football does nothing but enhance every other facet of the University.

As a Bengals fan, our admin equals Mike Brown in the 80's and early 90's. It's a business, I'm happy with what is made from it. It's profitable, but, ain't doing nothing more than currently doing. Mediocrity and average work, and so why fix it? Versus, the newer Brown who figured out, spend a little more, change a few things, and win a little more, and lord, these fans will spend more and I'll make more.

Whether we win, lose, recruits pan out or not, Butch fails or succeeds, we all have to wait and see. Next year is a big year, and unfortunately for Butch the only thing that matters for his job security is he has to win. He's on the warmish nearing hot blazing seat, and, we will see come middle of December how we all feel.

This....all day.....THIS........and too many on VN support this attitude........CBJ has us FIRMLY in the "also ran" category of the SEC........"FIX THAT"

So, you are HAPPY with "any" bowl game?? You are un-fixable and a huge part of the problem on the Hill.

How can fans like you post stuff like this about other fans, and feel good about it?
