Big time recruits want to go to big time programs in the now. Butch had great recruiting success because we were on the up and up and could possibly make a move. This last season gave a whole lotta ammunition to other coaches to dissuade recruits from coming to Rocky Top. Jalen Hurd leaving was huge. Why on earth would the star running back that was virtually one of, if not the, face of the team decide to transfer mid season? How did Tennessee possibly lose to South Carolina and Vandy w/ all that talent? Recruits see that stuff. Red flags, alarms, whatever. Now that Butch has proven to make in game mistakes and no longer can fall back on recruiting, he better pray for a miracle season. And this is coming from a Butch Jones fan.
Not great but solid. Needed a blue chip RB, got one. Needed quality help at DT, got it. Needed a blue chip MLB, got one. The number one OT this year and a top five OT coming in next year. The sky aint falling.
You have to understand Tennessee athletics. We have cheaped out ever since Fulmer. We have brainless people running things. Expect another year of 7-8 regular season wins, more SEC west losses and another weak B10 bowl game. Tennessee is now firmly entrenched in mediocrity. It is what it is. We just have to accept it.
I think the majority of us are lined up in these 3 posts.
We are ok, better than average, can't tell the future but sure remember the past 10 years and the last few being and feeling a little better than we have had. Problem being we remember the 90's and early '00's and we want that back.
We're not there yet, we thought this past year was maybe our year, it wasn't, and now, we know it's going to be a harder task than last year to get the SECE.
Maybe it's not our current coach that will achieve, but, things are better than they have been and we're just on that tipping point of taking flight, floating, or sadly, fallen. If not Butch, then at least the next guy has it better than when Jones came in.
Our administration, or castration, limits and causes detriment to the face of the University, which is Volunteer Football. Great football does nothing but enhance every other facet of the University.
As a Bengals fan, our admin equals Mike Brown in the 80's and early 90's. It's a business, I'm happy with what is made from it. It's profitable, but, ain't doing nothing more than currently doing. Mediocrity and average work, and so why fix it? Versus, the newer Brown who figured out, spend a little more, change a few things, and win a little more, and lord, these fans will spend more and I'll make more.
Whether we win, lose, recruits pan out or not, Butch fails or succeeds, we all have to wait and see. Next year is a big year, and unfortunately for Butch the only thing that matters for his job security is he has to win. He's on the warmish nearing hot blazing seat, and, we will see come middle of December how we all feel.
