Considering it was the 2nd best record in the SEC overall, Yes! Saban has a A+ second best deserves atleast a B to B+. It may not be to what many think is the "Tennessee Standard" but is far better than we have seen under the 2 previous coaches and is moving in the right direction not down the drain like many on here seem to think!

Its not just Tennessee its the entire SEC outside of Bama, let's get real!!
2nd Best overall? That would be Florida at 6-2. Then comes Auburn and LSU at 5-3, then right smack in the middle of mediocre town, we shared the 4th spot with Kentucky, Georgia and TA&M. That's only a "B" in the land of participation trophies.
Which having a three way tie for second place in the SECe division, with a record of 4-4, pretty much reiterates how bad the SECe was this year, with every team except for Florida being at .500 or below. Yet would shouldn't have expected CBJ to be able to take the division?
It's time to move on from Dooley. Setting the bar at "well he's better than Dooley" is doing nothing for the return of Tennessee football. I glad Butch Jones was able to recover somewhat from Dooley's failures, but his record at UT speaks for itself 14-18 in conference play, and expecting him to do more in 2017 with less than he had in 2016 just isn't logical given what we've seen the last four seasons.
Only team I give a damn about closing the gap with Alabama is Tennessee. The fact that Georgia or Arkansas or MissSt or Florida is far behind Bama means nothing to me, I want my team, Tennessee to close the gap and in fact, at some point, beat Alabama.....yet, that's not happening, we're falling further behind, the gap is growing.
Overall Record
I'm not sure if barely skirting by App State, and Ohio help your argument very much.Va Tech was a decent win I guess. We did actually play 4 quarters against TN Tech so....
But I'll, bite, you'd be fine if CBJ never had a higher conference record than 5-3 as long as his overall record was 10-3 after a bowl win?
I completely agree but obviously we have look at it in context. The gap is growing n the entire SEC. we are still moving up in the pecking order!
I didn't say that, I said his record is 2 second best in a conference that is a one team race, We can't measure everythign to Bama. We have to Build from year to year and we have seen improvements in the overall record.
So you'll never be happy if we aren't 8-0 in the SEC? We have a lot to build on and if Butch doesn't show some strides at Building a Championship level program over the next 2 years then I see us making a change but i would bet we are stuck with Butch for atleast 2 more years regardless of his record.
Sometimes we need to step back and remember where we came from and see where we are moving towards the ship hasn't quit moving forward yet. when it does the captain will go down with the ship. Until then look at the improvements and work to get better. We aren't on a sinking ship like many want to imply on here.
You seen the picture with the two dogs chained up and they are going at each other barking cause they cant reach each other, then the chain breaks and they stop and walk away?lol
I don't think we're moving up given what happened on the field in 2016 and with our last 2 recruiting classes, which have fallen off considerably from the 2014 and 2015 classes......we're falling further behind, not catching up.
In context of the rest of the SEC we aren't that far behind outside of Bama.
Realistically where did you expect us to be in year 4 after Butch took over? Serious question I am trying to understand your expectations coming into a new coach, And also if we fired Butch after next year what would be your realistic expectations of the new coach in 4 years?![]()
All feel free to share opinion but not an arguement just realistic expectations for Butch in year 4 and a new coach if hired this year and 4 more years?
4 full recruiting classes, has completely turned the roster over and then some, has had 2 top 10 classes and we still need to wait for him to build depth? Why?
He's done an outstanding job rebuilding the roster and all things off the field (APR, high school coach relationships, PR, selling the brand, getting former players back involved, etc), and he's done a decent job improving the record.....but he's also lost 5-6 games he had no business losing and is clearly a substandard game day coach.
The overall job he's done to date in some phases deserves much praise and in other phases much criticism. He's not yet won so much as a division title in a bad SEC East and, imo, doesn't deserve a B+, especially if he's getting a higher grade than guys like Sumlin, Mullen, Freeze and Malzahn and losing to teams like SCar and Vandy and squeezing by a bad team like App State. I think he deserves a B+ or A- for his off the field work and more like a C or C- for his game day accomplishments. Overall, probably more like a C+ or so.
Your rating was the same as mine. C+
TN has been recruiting too many 3 star players. We will never make it to the top doing that. Having many of your best players out on defense does make a difference. Our second string has been getting very little playing time because of our struggles.
Our entire 2nd string had to play this past year due to injuries. Many players have gotten playing time on defense, we have many folks with that have played several minutes coming back. I don't see many backups that didn't play last year. GBO!!!
