No Natty without Elite Recruiting

Bet there was a similar post on VN the year after PM graduated:

No Natty without Peyton and Elite Recruits

Maybe this year's team will perform better than last couple of classes since they do not have all that hype and high expectations on them. Just saying...

We had all kinds of elite recruits on that '98 team.

We had all kinds of elite recruits on that '98 team.

Would love to see the stats on that one. Just seemed like after PM left that expectations were much lower for the Tee Martin led team - which took the pressure off them, IMO>

So unless we recruit well, we won't be getting any cheap beer?

Am I reading the title to this thread correctly?

Correct.

You'll have to spring for the good stuff while watching us wallow in mediocrity.

Better beer should be in your budget, however, seeing as how you'll only have to get to Nashville for the bowl game, not some New Years Day sunny locale.

Fred White, Terry Fair, Travis Henry, Al Wilson, Jeff Hall, just to name a few. Are you kidding?

Nah, it's all on the negavols that recruiting is down. Just ask Mike Farrell.

Farrell believes Jones will need to alter his recruiting pitch and results on the field to entice more high-level recruits to Tennessee in the future.

“It’s easier to sell a vision than it is to sell results. When you are taking a job and replacing Derek Dooley, you have a vision that we are not going to be that Tennessee anymore. We are not going to be horrible. You get kids to buy in because Tennessee has so much to offer. It has great fans, facilities and tradition and plays in the SEC. There are so many things to sell, so when your first three classes are home runs it’s not a surprise,” Farrell said.

“But after being predicted to win the SEC East this year and being a dark horse to win it the year before and falling short each time, now kids are like ‘OK. I’m not buying into your vision as much. You have to prove it to me.’ Until they break through and win the SEC East, it’s going to be a struggle in recruiting a little bit more than it was the first couple of years.”

"Mike Farrell is a hack. He hates UT"

Think he hit the nail on the head. One thing is for sure...we won't have to worry about the team being overhyped coming into this season.

Losing an all time great will make for some unease but according to this:

ESPN.com: NCF - Tracking the Top 10 1993-97

from 93 to 97 UT was never lower than 8th and pulled down #1 twice.

Not only does he Botch games, now he Botches recruiting. Two highly rated recruits from the Knoxville area go to Clemson, other highly rated recruits from Tennessee headed out of state, Conliffe who we led for and badly need, heading to Florida, Ray headed to Bammer, and all we got are Trey Smith and a bunch of 3 star projects.

Botch Jones is a total pathetic loser, and if we don't send him packing soon and spend the money to get somebody good, we'll be right back where we were under Derrick Doofus, or worse!

#11 class for 2017. we are stuck with 9-10 win seasons i think. which is better than we were. but not where we want to be forever. need titles.

I'll take those 10 win seasons. At least that way we are legitimately in the discussion and that would mean we quit handing games to USCjr and Vandy. It might also mean we have learned to hold on to 14 point leads in the 4th qtr. There's just something not right about your HC running out and celebrating the "Second 8 win season in a row!" when both this year and last year should have been 10 win seasons and he knows it.

247 Composite Rankings

2017 (Current Class) - 14th
2016 - 14th
2015 - 4th
2014 - 7th

Average 9.75

Recruiting has been where it needs to be under Butch. In line with many of those programs.
While #14 is fair for 2017, because it's just not an exciting class with several projects and under the radar/underrated recruits. But 2016 is a top 10 class to me. Lots of talent in the 2016 class.

Auburn averaged 16th, Clemson 13th in their NC wins. LSU 12th. Although not a NC win but Washington probably averaged in the 40s for their recruiting, they made playoffs. Oregon could not be in Top 15 for their NC title game (4 years average).

Even for NCs, 21% of the teams were recruiting below top 10. That is a big % to overlook.

So yes, you can win NC or be elite without Top 10 recruiting if you know how to develop players and coach good games.

Big word...

Botch is a total pathetic freakin' loser. That's what he is. If we don't run him out of town soon, we'll be back to Dooleyland 1-7 SEC records. One highly rated player and a bunch of 3-star projects ain't gonna cut it !!! But we are UT, and we won't do squat until things get really really bad and there's only 65-70K in the stands. Then the idiot sunshine pumpers in our fan base will be screamin' to make that pompous lazy politician Phil our coach again. UGGGGGGGGHHHHHH !!!!!

(1) These exceptions are explained in the article.
(2) Their road to the playoffs is much easier than a team in the SEC.
(3) See 2 above.
(4) Yet to be seen with this coaching staff.

I feel your pain

But less salt will help the blood pressure

Agreed,

Vols seem to be an afterthought with the coverage today that I have seen.

Guess all the talking heads and recruiting gurus don't understand the value of life championships and heart like the good posters here at VN does.

They have actually slipped to 15th on Rivals.

Pretty much in Dooley territory with this class according to rankings.
