It's still clear that the staff can evaluate. Bama was considering Shamburger as a back up plan. Notre Dame took a late run at Bailey. Murphy visited Ole Miss. LSU flirted with Labruzza. Florida and others flirted with Page. These were all guys that people criticized for taking early. It's not as bad as people are suggesting.

Those sound like rousing endorsements.

That makes sense for those names but there are plenty of names later this process where We took much lower ranked players due to missing on the higher recruits. It's just not factual to use those in the same vain as taking them as higher ceiling guys.

I am not sure who you are referring to. We missed out on the 5 star instate recruits in the summer, so we were looking for others. The only person that fits your scenario recently is the new RB commit after missing on Akers. But Akers probably wasn't coming even if we had gone to the Sugar Bowl. We have Kelly and already had Chandler.

Recruiting doesn't end in August though.

The entire offseason & early parts of the season people around here kept suggesting "when we're 11-1 going into Atlanta, recruits will be lining up, we'll flip some of these guys, etc etc"

People also thought it would be a top 5 class because of the instate talent. Going to the Sugar Bowl versus going to the Music City Bowl would not have changed much.

A number of our last commits were taken Because we missed on higher recruits not because their ceiling is higher. Pretty obvious to me that is the case.

Aka lower rated guys, correct?

I feel like that's such a weak argument. Our roster is in such good shape that we don't need higher rated recruits that could push for immediate playing time? That's assanine.

Just call a spade a spade. This class is much weaker than expected because we failed to live up to expectations & Butch's message has gone stale.

If you're going to call something asinine, you should learn how to spell it..

Just stating the truth. Don't care if you want to believe it or not.

I wish we had a better class, too. But I also look at the positive and realize that I have no control over it. Yea, it's a message board, yada, yada, yada. Y'all have fun discussing how awful it is.

Not sure why you thought he was implying that you were wrong. Just that phrases like "flirted with" don't really add anything to the perception.

Bruin, I am an attorney and can't argue with you. I guess I have no idea who has a "higher ceiling." I assume the coaches didn't take them to just add bodies. But who knows?

The VQ guys alluded to it on their podcast the other day that they don't think UT will take as many early commitments in the future. With Butch being at mid-major schools and the anomaly of the 2014 class, I think they are figuring out what works best for recruiting at UT and what's best in the SEC.

If the changes to the staff lead to better recruiters on staff, then we'll probably see UT going after more guys going into signing day 2018.

That is of course unless they get 10-12 in state guys locked down.

Don't really care. Page was quoted as saying that "Georgia and Florida were two that came by and tried..." I assume they weren't trying to offer him a scholarship for their business schools. Maybe their staffs spend time and resources on players they don't want.

They took them because they were next in line on the available list. Just look at the list of schools we are beating out for our last guys here. You can't argue things are going well when the list of competitors goes from FSU/LSU/Ohio state to WKU/Syracuse/ and Rutgers.

Don't think I ever said "things are going well." I just don't think it's as bad as people think. I don't evaluate talent for a living. But this staff has shown that they can evaluate talent. We will see if that translates to wins.

I don't think the sky is falling either but it's a trend that must change next year or it will be IMO.

Palmer had Michigan, Nebraska, Penn State among others. He was out latest commit. You just picking and choosing?

Were WKU, Syracuse, and Rutgers? You're changing argument mid-stream. Out latest commit had a nice offer list. You don't know who was pushing. You just try to make the most negative argument.

Bingo. Yet posters still feel the need to take the bait and argue with him.

By the way this not directed at you kristy, just everyone in general!

Huh?

Heck yea those schools were involved as they were the school our targets decommitted from.

Sigh. Decommitted being the key word here since BIGGER schools were recruiting them. Why do people struggle with this so much?

Palmer had visited UCLA and was supposed to visit Ohio St this weekend before committing.

I don't think this is a failing class I just think it's below the line where Tennessee needs to be to win championships. I give this class a C- without ray. It goes to a C with him.

Some of you guys really need to get a hobby. Your happiness should not hinge on something as arbitrary as recruiting rankings. Just enjoy football while we still have it

Really really need Ray to come and for everyone else to make it in (murphy)... otherwise the class is pretty damn poor outside Smith and Chandler by SEC standards.

Name em catnip...go ahead and put your ass on the line. Name every committed player that is "poor by SEC standards". This is one of the dumbest posts you have ever made, and that is saying a lot. I don't think you are stupid, you know damn well this class is not bad. Disappointing because of the "best class ever" hype last year? Yes...it is. But the truly poor players have all been jettisoned, there is value in this class now, and with a little luck, even better next week.
