The Official 2nd Amendment Appreciation Thread

Ok gents, so I've emailed with American Tactical a couple of times and finally have confirmation their Omni Hybrid Maxx is rated to stand the pressure of a 6.8SPC. It's actually documented in their 2017 Product Catalog; of which they sent me a free copy. Now, I know most of you guys still aren't fans of the polymer receivers, and you're certainly entitled to your opinions, but I'm gonna give this a try. We'll see how it turns out...

Now, back to the original issue that prompted my original post: which caliber should I build? I'm torn between the 6.8SPC and the 6.5G (after quickly dismissing the 300BO). Grand, I make the assumption that if the polymer receivers can withstand the 6.8SPC that it can withstand the 6.5G; would that be a safe assumption in your estimation?

SAAMI lists the max chamber pressure at 54,000 PSI. Some of the older Grendel data lists it at 52,000 PSI. Fairly close on both.

All the pressure is in the chamber anyways, the bolt will always slide back in a straight line and the metal reinforcements on the plastic receivers, I've seen .308 do fine on polymer, as long as the barrel is of good quality I wouldn't see a problem with it.

Awesome! Thanks for the info!

Just to clarify, I wasn't pooing on the polymer receivers. I've never owned one so I'm not qualified to make a judgment. I just was trying to understand the reasoning to use one over the aluminum when they can be had for the same price. I'm definitely interested in how your build turns out. Please keep us informed. I'm about to start my 6.8 build myself.

Definitely didn't take it that way at all... I get that polymer receivers are a sort of novelty at this point and that sparks curiosity. Hell, that's why I bought one--I'm curious!! Lol... I totally get your inquiry, and if we're the other way around I'd be asking you the same I'm sure. I'd want the educational value of someone else's thought process in buying some different than the "norm."

Anyway, point is, I didn't take it that you were "pooing" (lol) on polymer. I'll share as the build goes along, but it won't be anything too quick...other projects in line ahead of this one. Keep us updated on your build too!

Okay, I was really thinking 6.8SPC, but you're starting to sway me to 6.5G. I'm still not sold 100%, but I'm sold on 6.8SPC anymore either.

One of my thoughts is ammo availability. I can get 6.8SPC pretty easily (with a little discount too), but haven't had the luck in searching for 6.5G.

I'll keep researching them both.

Question for you guys...

I am considering building an AR. I don't have any military experience, but I grew up hunting and shooting, and I am technical (work in information technology). I have a 30/30, a couple of shotguns, a tack-driver Ruger all-weather 77/22, and a Bersa Thunder 380.

I very much value accuracy, but I don't/can't spend an inordinate amount of money on building out a rifle. I will probably buy and assemble it over maybe the next year or so.

If any of you have a couple of minutes and are interested, what would you recommend? Any advice for a noob AR build? What chamber (5.56 or Wylde or something completely different)? Barrel length and material? Any other component upgrades worth upgrading from the start? Gotchas?

Thank you!

Building it will end up costing more over the long run than buying a complete on. Special tools needed, etc.

Check out this thread for my thoughts and words of (limited) wisdom

And honestly, if you are piecing it together, I'd recommend the following items. Stalk Palmetto State until they come back in stock/go on sale. I'll put up just the Palmetto links, but you can look around for the non PSA stuff and find it cheaper:

PSA 16" CHF Mid-length 5.56 NATO 1:7 Upper - Without BCG or Charging Handle - 26409

Palmetto State Armory 5.56 Premium Full Auto Bolt Carrier Group - 8779

BCMGUNFIGHTER Charging Handle 5.56 Mod 4 BCM-GFH4

Magpul MBUS Back-Up Sight GEN 2 - Rear - MAG248

PSA AR15 H Buffer

(FFL needed)

And one off site link:

Good beginner setup.

ETA: Forgot the mags:

If you are putting a premium on accuracy I'd take GV's sage advice on assembling a complete lower and then head here for whatever best suits your needs as a complete upper.

By the way, do you prefer 1:7 vs 1:8 or any other rate of twist?

Twist rates are entirely on the buyer, but I wouldn’t recommend anything higher than a 1:8 twist barrel. I prefer the 1:7 twist as it will stabilize everything from 52 grains to the high weight 77 grain bullets. The 1:8, from what I’ve read, does the same. I’d shy away from 1:9 twist since it’s not automatically going to stabilize grains over 68. Some do, some don’t. It’s just easier to buy a 1:7 or 1:8 and know it’s going to work.

Never mind. Thanks!

Question: Is the Beretta PX4 Storm a smart choice over a SIG P225 or P250? I have a Glock 17 3G but wondering if I should add a second 9mm or go for another caliber. Also, own a 1911 and S&W .357.

The Sig 226 is a double stack (I think the PX4 is as well) so it's a better comparison than the 225. The 225 is a great gun that there's not a great reason to own.

All depends on how it fits you and what kind of firing mechanism you like. Sig is DA/SA hammer fired. Since you have a 1911 a Glock and a revolver you're clearly okay with different firing mechanisms.

well I still haven't gotten over the pneumonia quite yet,to get out and price some revolvers yet ,probably be a new Charter or maybe a Smith and Wesson

I will probably go with a 38,I do think that will do what I want it to do

where do ya'll buy your shells at ? I've seen some good prices on the internet, but haven't looked far enough into it,to figure in shipping and handling or is it better to buy from a local establishment ? cost is important too,I want something affordable to target practice with and the same sized shell for defense, what name brand too ?

and again,thanks for the help
