NFL Scouts Are Skeptical About Derek Barnett

There is no way he gets past 15--and if that happens there are a lot of stupid GMs in the NFL. Good pass-rushing DEs are the second most coveted players in the NFL, after QBs and before shut-down corners. He'll be a better pro than Garrett, IMO.

Barnett's so bad that I hope he drops to exactly the 28th pick in the 1st round. Please please please please.

His assessment must have been based on a game from his early days at UT. He claims he "isn't explosive off the ball" and "won't over power lineman in the NFL like he did in college". This scout obviously hasn't seen film from his last two seasons. Explosion off the ball is one of Barnett's strong suits, in fact that's what he often uses to speed rush and bend around the lineman. His bend around OTs is very reminiscent of the way Von Miller rushes the passer. In most of his sacks from the past two seasons he doesn't "over power" the lineman he simply beats them around the edge with his speed. Now in Barnett's freshman season he may have gotten away with over powering lineman and lacking explosion off the ball. But that only speaks to the type of work horse additude he has by working to improve his craft. NFL scouts can say whatever they want. Doesn't change Barnett actual ability.

Lol. Leonard little, John Henderson, Robert Ayers, Reggie White, Al Wilson, Parys Haralson, Todd Kelly Sr, Justin harrel, etc... To name a few could not do what Mr. Barnett did at Tennessee. The greatest pass rusher in UT history says otherwise, so sorry "unnamed scout" stats don't lie.

tap the brakes a little there friend.....

Barnett is truly good, but let's NOT make the mistake of thinking that he was better than Reggie....

I know exactly which scout it is and I'll give you a hint. It's the same one several years ago who said that Bruce Smith would never make it in the NFL.

If that's the case and this guy is still a scout cut him some slack. Considering Bruce Smith was drafted in the mid 80's , he's probably half senile by now.

Exactly. '85. Round 1 Pick 1. That scout (who will remain "unnamed" = slack) wasn't exactly razor sharp even back then. Many believe he should exit with what's left of his dignity and retire sooner rather than later. I really believe that's why he's referred to as unnamed so often. Give him two more years, three tops and he's out.

Don't get me wrong. I think a lot of Myles Garrett as a defensive end. That said, he's no Derek Barnett.
That's not a knock on him though because nobody else is either.

Anyone who passes on Barnett for any other player in this draft is missing out. These are same scouts who couldn't identify Brady ? Dak ? Arian Foster went undrafted .. hundreds of names that went undrafted and did well, hundreds drafted really high or really low.
These clowns who are saying Barnett can't succeed in NFL have no idea about football.

I think Barnett will be a lot like Dwight Freeney in the pros. Not everyone's ideal size but has motor and heart that a lot of freak athletes lack. He'll be a welcome addition to any NFL roster

How can anyone project Barnett to be a bust in the NFL, when he broke the GOAT's sack record, in just 3 years, compared to RW's four?!?

Success in college has nothing to do with success in the NFL. With that said, I don't see him being a Michael Sam (no jokes intended) but a good NFL player.

Take off your orange colored glasses, MG will be the better pro, just a freak of an athlete, probably the #1 overall pick.
