There was a bill that passed the Senate in 2013. Keyword search "gang of eight bill". Didn't do anything in the House but would add 700 mile of wall and fence and 20,000 new border agents, drones, and a lot of high tech stuff. The pill that republicans couldn't swallow was the amnesty portion of the bill. I suspect the wall will be something along those lines without the amnesty part. It was a compromise.

Sounds like a great way to spend millions with our infrastructure in shambles.

Agree its a term that leads people to believe that the problem will be solved. There is not doubt it will help curb illegal immigrants trying to enter the country. Mexicans are good with tools so just how thick is this wall going to be before there are holes. One Two weeks.

How about going under or over? I'm sure there are areas where something needs to be done but some of the T supporters thing it's going to be like the old Berlin Wall..

Replace the word "slavery" with 19th Amendment if you want, then.

I know the history, but I forget on a message board you have to think about all the fine details of a post otherwise people such as yourself ignore the overall point in order to set someone straight.

Just having a discussion with someone who is now being an azz because he can't handle someone not agreeing with him. Sorry you can write your opinion and when I write something to support mine all you can comeback is that comment. No sir, you don't seem to me to know history or you would've had a discussion instead of a zing.

I think I'm finally done with it. Too many people think that because you believe it should change, that it means you don't know why it happened in the first place.

Why it happened in the first place is why it is still relevant for today. I am sure you know this but we are a republic and not a democracy. To throw out the EC is to change us to a straight democracy. Again, the great experiment which so far has worked but with the kind of changes some wish to espoused has endangered it. Also, the executive orders sounded good at one time. Only use in emergencies when the POTUS needs to act quickly. Now Bush, Obama, and Trump are shooting them out like VN member's dogs shoot out farts. Not a good thing for the republic either. Men tend to abuse power and that has always been a part of history. What pisses me off about your attitude is I wasn't trying to set anybody straight. I was just trying to have a discussion but now I am done with it.

Sorry about the misunderstanding, Jacketvol. Even though this is a message board and it happens regularly, I'm not into feuds. :hi:

No need to get caught up in terminology. Explain what the difference between a republic and a democracy and its relation to the EC.

A good read:

United States: Republic or Democracy?

The EC does not fall into either category because they are not elected.

I'm a construction superintendent and without Mexican labor we wouldn't be able to do near the volume of sales. work harder, faster and our guys make good honest American born type wages not cheating these lazy gringos out of a job to save a dime. simply more efficient. most have paperwork and drivers license, some are here on work visa, others that provide identification accepted by the IRS is good enough for me. I've tried to hire homegrown but in our particilar area of the construction industry it's just hard to find good hard pipe hittin $$ggas like I'm looking for. they exist just rare. couple their work performance with the fact they are Catholic (jesus), want to drink beer, listen to annoying music, have lots of kids which are all harmless compared to radical Islamic terrorist illegal aliens who want to kill all of us, I'm all for waiting on the Mexicans for now. I ain't trying to pick my own strawberries any damn way.

Bingo. Easy to get work visas with a clear path to citizenship for those that hold a job and have no run ins with the law.

The only problem is those people coming across don't make enough money to pay any significant taxes. They are an additional drain on our resources such as education, medical, etc.

Based on this post you're a criminal who uses personal greed to justify your illegal activities. My guess is that if you didn't have access to illegal labor you'd have to up the wages you offer and you'd soon be able to fully staff with legal labor.

With the way things are set up, they're a drain whether they are paying taxes or not.

If they are coming here to get honest work, I don't think that is something to discourage. No system is going to be perfect, but I would be fine with something that allows them to work and gives them a path to citizenship if they want it (which includes being able to be minimally functional in the English language, understanding and abiding by the law, etc). Otherwise, allow them a tightly regulated work visa. Require sponsors if you want.

Plus, I think the argument can be made that they make significantly less primarily because they are illegal. Which brings up the most important yet ridiculously under considered part of all this: nailing employers that hire and employ illegally and only perpetuate the problem.

They don't make less because they are illegal. They make less because of the type of jobs they perform. Truth is whether we want to admit it or not, they are a drain on our economy. People making $15 or less don't pay taxes, at least significant taxes. Their cost in the form of education and medical care for their families and other things outweighs what they pay in taxes.

Now am I totally against immigration? Absolutely not. But my contention is if you totally open the borders as Newt suggest, it would be a flood of epic proportions that would completely destroy our economy. Because after a point you saturate the work force with this type of labor and you're stuck paying for their medical care, food, housing, and education. You can't simply send them home.

If it's not a game of thrones magical ice wall, I want nothing to do with it.

Also enact a nights watch for criminals along the wall to keep the mexilings out.
