There was a bill that passed the Senate in 2013. Keyword search "gang of eight bill". Didn't do anything in the House but would add 700 mile of wall and fence and 20,000 new border agents, drones, and a lot of high tech stuff. The pill that republicans couldn't swallow was the amnesty portion of the bill. I suspect the wall will be something along those lines without the amnesty part. It was a compromise.
Agree its a term that leads people to believe that the problem will be solved. There is not doubt it will help curb illegal immigrants trying to enter the country. Mexicans are good with tools so just how thick is this wall going to be before there are holes. One Two weeks.
Replace the word "slavery" with 19th Amendment if you want, then.
I know the history, but I forget on a message board you have to think about all the fine details of a post otherwise people such as yourself ignore the overall point in order to set someone straight.
I think I'm finally done with it. Too many people think that because you believe it should change, that it means you don't know why it happened in the first place.
Why it happened in the first place is why it is still relevant for today. I am sure you know this but we are a republic and not a democracy. To throw out the EC is to change us to a straight democracy. Again, the great experiment which so far has worked but with the kind of changes some wish to espoused has endangered it. Also, the executive orders sounded good at one time. Only use in emergencies when the POTUS needs to act quickly. Now Bush, Obama, and Trump are shooting them out like VN member's dogs shoot out farts. Not a good thing for the republic either. Men tend to abuse power and that has always been a part of history. What pisses me off about your attitude is I wasn't trying to set anybody straight. I was just trying to have a discussion but now I am done with it.
I'm a construction superintendent and without Mexican labor we wouldn't be able to do near the volume of sales. work harder, faster and our guys make good honest American born type wages not cheating these lazy gringos out of a job to save a dime. simply more efficient. most have paperwork and drivers license, some are here on work visa, others that provide identification accepted by the IRS is good enough for me. I've tried to hire homegrown but in our particilar area of the construction industry it's just hard to find good hard pipe hittin $$ggas like I'm looking for. they exist just rare. couple their work performance with the fact they are Catholic (jesus), want to drink beer, listen to annoying music, have lots of kids which are all harmless compared to radical Islamic terrorist illegal aliens who want to kill all of us, I'm all for waiting on the Mexicans for now. I ain't trying to pick my own strawberries any damn way.
Bingo. Easy to get work visas with a clear path to citizenship for those that hold a job and have no run ins with the law.

The only problem is those people coming across don't make enough money to pay any significant taxes. They are an additional drain on our resources such as education, medical, etc.
With the way things are set up, they're a drain whether they are paying taxes or not.
If they are coming here to get honest work, I don't think that is something to discourage. No system is going to be perfect, but I would be fine with something that allows them to work and gives them a path to citizenship if they want it (which includes being able to be minimally functional in the English language, understanding and abiding by the law, etc). Otherwise, allow them a tightly regulated work visa. Require sponsors if you want.
Plus, I think the argument can be made that they make significantly less primarily because they are illegal. Which brings up the most important yet ridiculously under considered part of all this: nailing employers that hire and employ illegally and only perpetuate the problem.
