Very good thoughts. I have criticized DeBord my fair share, but I agree that some games the offense did enough and the defense lost us the game. We have terrible consistency. It seemed a lot of the times that the offense could not score when the defense was playing solid and then the offense scored a lot when the defense could not stop anybody. I hope next season we play a lot more complimentary football.

I will say that while the offense under DeBord put up a lot of numbers, it was the inconsistency and predictability of his offense that bothered me. I hated the situational play calling and we had too many 3 and outs at crucial times. I'd add Ohio to the games where the offense played bad too. I was not impressed with the Scott hire, but I hope he can bring the aggressiveness that can take us to the next level. He's trying to make a name for himself.

It was interesting to hear Scott talk about how all the coaches were involved in making the game plan. So maybe the offense was effective as a unit under all the coaches and some of the on-field issues were due to DeBord in the box. I hope Scott can get them corrected and turn us into a well oiled machine.

I posted another one. He was an All-State performer and is 6'0 170lbs now. Runs a 4.30 too. Ran 4.33 at Auburn and has numerous sub 4.4s across the south. Teams were worried because he was 152lbs a couple of months ago. Going to be a monster CB in college. Kid is a baller. And a freak athlete.

I just want to see us get back to playing disciplined football. Take care of the ball and tackle well. If we had done that last year we would have been in Atlanta.

We were gonna lose in Atlanta either way, we had way too many injuries to compete. I know ppl want to ***** about vandy and usce loses but the season ended on a positive note it just wasn't in the cards for us last year with all of the injuries. I really believe this year we have a team that can win 10 games potentially if the cards fall right, good line play on both sides and an above average qb will make or break this team

I am a sunshine pumper, so please take this fwiw. We never should have lost to freakin' USC or Vandy. Period.

It wasn't. Looking at cumulative stats is of very little value.

Debord could not make half time adjustments well in his first season. He did not game plan well in his second season.

Yes, they scored 29 pts. per game in the first 8 games in 2016. Yet, they only scored 9 points per game in the first half of that stretch, which included 24 points in one game (Va Tech). This crappy output directly led to losing 3 of their first 5 SEC games. They simply got too far behind to catch up at times. It almost got them against Appy and UGA as well. Last play type wins.

The year before we all know how bad he stunk it up in the second half because of losses in games they had leads. He would not adjust at half and would sit on the ball in the second half.

I agree with you against A&M and probably USC. But, you can't say that against Vandy. We were plating DE's at DT. When I saw Latroy Lewis playing tackle, I knew we were in trouble. Just can't do that in the SEC.

I agree but that's not my point...getting butt raped again by Alabama in the sec championship game would not have been fun. Who cares about being happy with making it there I want to put a team in there that has a chance to win it

I care about making it there. Sure, we probably would have gotten smoked, but any given Saturday and all that. This "happy that we avoided the SECC game" thing mystifies me.

If we played just disciplined football they wouldn't have smashed us. We weren't so overmatched talent wise to not put up a real fight. IMO

Can't disagree with some of this, but you also have to break it down even further. There were key moments in the second half against OU and UF in 2015. Against OU, I believe we got a turnover on the OU side, and Hurd fumbles the first play, which results in a loss of about 15 yards. Missed FG. That wins the game. Not even discussing the drop by Ellis.

Against UF, we are up 20-7 halfway through the 3rd and Dobbs fumbles the ball (I believe on a designed run, which we want). Even if we go 3 and out and punt, we force UF to drive the field, which they had not done. Their lone score at the time was set up by a 47 yard run. Instead, they get it at our 29 and score to make it 20-14.

Those aren't Debord's fault. It just seems like UT just has had a way of letting go of victory. Some can be pointed at conservative play-calling, but some can also be pointed at untimely turnovers. You can put 2016 A&M category as well. Debord calls a great game, and Dobbs just has to fall on one of two balls.

Well shoot.
First wins don't count if the other teams fumble, then they don't count if it's on a last second pass. And now stats are of little value.

Almost seems a waste of time to even keep records.

Nobody celebrates second place not sure how that mystifies you unless you like being second

No my line of thinking goes along with the idea that we had no shot of winning the sec last year with our injuries so just making it to the sec championship would have been pretty pointless playing bama with the same short deck. You see how my argument has merit and yours just continues the same old negative football forum narrative

We were overmatched in some areas for sure. But your mentality is just not how I'm ever going to think as a TN fan. I want Bama. Give me Bama. That's OUR biggest rival and we haven't beaten them in forever. We never will if we always avoid the game.

It doesn't really matter now. But I would have loved to see a rematch. We would have at least known the level of physicality it would take the 2nd time around. Florida didn't have that experience.

You never know, Dobbs could have had the game of his life. Anything could have happened. You definitely don't get any glory if you don't play in the game.

What, that I would have liked to have won the SEC East? Sorry for the toxic agenda.

I'll let you get back to thinking you know how to distinguish "merit" in an argument though.
