Because it was a very good hire to begin with. Don't see how it's that hard to understand. It was widely viewed as that last year at this time. That's my point. Could we utilize the TE position more? Of course, but we have to scheme to that. And coincidentally, the TE coach is going to be in charge of that. Wolf needs to be better for sure, as he was prematurely label a future NFL TE on here.

It's not a matter of understanding or not understanding lol it's a matter of being able to back up a claim or not.

Right now, the claim that Scott was a home run hire as TE coach can't be backed up (that's not to imply that his hire was bad or anything like that...just saying that the jury is out on that). Pretty ironic that you're throwing shade at people for prematurely labeling Wolf when you're doing the same with Scott. Jury is still out on both.

You can move the goalposts and say you're talking about the perception at the time, but the context of the conversation you were replying to was the success of Butch's hires on the offensive side of the ball.

Edit: re-reading this it came off as way more dickish than I meant it to.

I think we're both mostly in agreement here, but maybe weren't on the same page as far as fan/media perception vs reality

I find this interesting. Can compare recruiting records from the past 5 years and get the average. Here's 2016's

Dam Mac has really killed UF in recruiting. The rise of FSU and now the has U certainly made things harder but I'd be sick to death if I were them. Even the smaller schools in Florida are starting to pull some croots (not mega classes but enough to hurt). They're the flagship uni in a talent rich state and the only one that can say they're SEC and recruiting has bottomed out. And while Mac has lucked into to SEC-E success for the past two seasons UF has been slaw aside from defense.

Add in every Big Six school in the SEC AND schools like ND, tOSU, PSU, and UM (to name just a few) making big inroads there and it's only going to get worse for them. I also think schools like IMG are really no good for UF since they're such a mixture of instate and a ton of out of state kids that go there and it has an impact and those.

Also, that chart reveals just how much talent UGA has had and wasted over the years. Puts their current class into perspective. Kirby isn't half the coach Richt was. I just can't get worked up over their class untl I see him mq==

It's after 3 am and I have been in the RF catching up after being able to witness God's miracle of life with our daughter giving birth to our second grandson and another future VFL contribution. All are doing well. As tired as Papaw now is, he knows that sleep is probably not going to happen as the adrenaline is pumping fast so here I sit trying to figure out how and why Butch cannot or will not seemingly make the same type quality hires on O as he has on D and the S&C. These projected O hires tell me he wants nobody challenging his theories, just develop players better to run it better. So he owns it I guess. Kind of admire his guts if not his wisdom. Will see. He may have rope a doped us for 4 years and is about to land the knock out punch for the belt next season.

Congrats on the second grandchild.

I never took you for a papaw Lol..always assumed you were around my age.

TEs blocked well and got open very well. Them catching the ball isn't on the coach. Especially the BS Croom was dropping.

I'm ready to see Scott calling plays personally. I think he'll attack with a more unpredictable style. Especially on first down.

I just don't understand why Jones has a problem going after the best coaches out there? Go get a proven coach with a track record for QBs. Don't hope or believe go get somebody that can undoubtedly do the job dude...

Well, that was a joke. But AHC titles mean next to nothing.

But hey, here we are again. Very little regard for each other, and a post full of emojis. All is right with the world despite Canales.

Nah...burn it down. QB coach isn't exciting...coached RBs..."BSiA" :w00t: Hence the scant use of :victory: emoji's in your referred post...really bothers you, huh?

Tried wading through 5 pages of jibberish since last night...did I miss that Canales has actually been announced already? I have only seen quotes from 247 that the Canales' hire is imminent. Doesn't everyone remember that it seems they have been fed false info the last few weeks since the Haney article came out? Maybe this is more false info? We will probably find out today.

He trained all of those QBs at his IMG QB Camp where he coached NFL prospects to get them ready for the NFL. I understand questions about his recruiting and short list of experience but he will get hired somewhere. There's a reason top picks in the draft went to train with him.

I live here and fully understand his role at IMG. He trained with them but most definitely didn't coach them up.

I did clarify that I did not necessarily mean your opinion, but rather than write all of that into several posts, I consolidated into one.

Weinke coached Jared Goff for a year...and is now out of a job.

As I stated back in one of my earlier posts, Canales isn't who I would have preferred either, but just because it isn't who I prefer does not make it a bad hire. I'm not going to bit** about him being a bad hire unless he proves himself to be a bad hire.

It's not sunshine pumping to refuse to jump into the bowels of hell without cause. Right now, we have no cause.

We really need Dormady (possibly) or JG (probably) to develop quickly. One of those two will most likely be critical to our success in 2017. So, the QB coach does seem to be very important this year. However, with that, we really have no idea how Canales is going to do here. I completely agree that all of the *****ing and moaning is unwarranted now. He was not my first choice either, but Butch knows what is at stake. I just think that we have to give it a chance and see how it works out. Our offense was terrific in most games last year. I think part of the credit for that should go to Butch. Let's see if it continues into this year.

Bruin, debord wasn't the qb coach. Sheridan was.

Scott is replacing Debord as OC.

Canales, while not an overwhelming hire, is an upgrade at qb coach.

That's not arguable, I think.

What is arguable is whether or not this is the best Butch could have done.

Of ourse, hiring a top flight QB coach usally means throwing in a title like co-OC, OC, or AHC though.

This is truly my stance on it. If he is the hire. Let's see what happens. The QB talent is here (or should be), let's see what he can do with it.

We hired (as some say, a swim coach) who put up what? The second best offensive numbers in UT history? Ride it out. We can always bit** about it later. Bit**ing about it now will not change anything. Give him time, he may surprise us.

I know man. Its depressing to read.

I've heard for two years how awful it was that UT did not have a QB coach.

UT hires a QB coach, but they went safe rather than sexy so its time to fire up the hot board? That doesn't make sense.

A few days after making by almost all accounts a good DB coach hire "outside" of the family, we're back to the "Damn good old boys, security blanket, just hiring sycophants" line of thought? That doesn't make sense.

If you want to believe a nonpaid GA was the main QB coach over the named OC/QB coach I can't help you.
