Hiring on potential "name recognition" is a disaterous strategy IMO
You hire a coach based on how he coaches and improves his players, not whether some middle aged men recognize his name from when he played 15 years ago.
Has Weinke ever had to recruit?
Did I say I was impressed? Nope. Never said it. All I have said is people need to stop their hand wringing if in fact Canales is the one hired.....Everyone's go to guy seems to be Weinke based off of POTENTIAL recruiting and this resume...
Coaching Career
IMG Academy (20102014) (High School kids)
Director of Football
St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams (20152016) (The Rams...lol)
Quarterbacks coach
When we recruit kids with "potential" the same people are the ones bit**ing about that, but now they want to hire a QB coach with potential. Makes no damn sense at all. So yeah, my opinion is that if that's what you are basing your opinion off of (maybe not you specifically, but you know there are plenty who are) then your (whoever your may belong to) opinion is pretty weak and therefore I find it insignificant.
:hi:
It's swill, but at least you don't pay 6 bucks for a cup that tastes burnt.
"Tennessee will imminently name Mike Canales its new quarterbacks coach, sources told multiple members of 247Sports including Ryan Callahan, filling the final truly open position on its coaching staff --- though more changes are expected as both Don Mahoney, offensive line, and Steve Stripling, defensive line, are under contracts that expire at the end of next month.
Canales is the only of Tennessees myriad candidates to be quarterbacks coach who received two in-person, on-campus interviews, being on Rocky Top as recently as Monday."

Of course my opinion is insignificant. As is yours and everyone's on this board. To think otherwise is delusional.
As I said previously, considering where we are as a program, I'd prefer to go with the riskier, higher upside guy than the guy who you can say, "Well, he coached Phillip Rivers 15 years ago."
Good discussion.
