Why do we not believe he can do it?

I don't think he will be able to identify when it will be time for a change, and when he does, I don't think he had a strong eye for coaching hires as head football coach.

I'll put it like this. I like Fulmer. I'm appreciative of his time at UT. I think he'll have some definite strengths as AD. I think he will have some glaring weaknesses. I sincerely hope our coaches do well enough that he isn't the one hiring their replacements.

I don't agree with the first sentence at all. At all. Devoe got passed by, but the continued negligence toward UT basketball was all Dickey.

And I heard that Fulmer was a bit jealous of Pearl more than once. Second and third hand, though.

I don't know that I'd say Fulmer was jealous of Pearl -- had no reason to be really but they had very different personalities and I could see them clashing. Phil was straight laced and pure old school Tennessean whereas Pearl was the reincarnation of PT Barnum when he was here. I loved them both but I can definitely see how they might not see eye to eye or get along.

Kind of funny how some hate current coaches for not producing like Fulmer yet don't like Fulmer lol. Get over it Fulmer will kill it as AD and we should
Love having him back. Media loves Fulmer and will put us in a good light

Fulmer may not be as tolerant as some think. He had us borderline elite outside of the ring shortage. He probably won't stand for mediocre football.

Absolutely would not tolerate bullcrap with football. He wants to rebuild his legacy which is this football program. Priority number one. He can also raise the heck out of some $$$ as someone else said Fulmer is almost solely responsible for raising the money for the new Neyland upgrades

Did Fulmer fire anyone besides Randy Sanders his whole career? I assume he won't be the one making those decisions anyway. I like Phil and am greatful for what he's done for the university. But this hire doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies. This has puppet written all over it.

It is about to come full circle.

This was a crazy ride. It was always supposed to be DB.

But in the end I actually think we got this right.

Fulmer did not fire Sanders, he resigned. He fired Pat Washington. Who else do you think he should have fired?

This maybe the right combination though. Fulmer saw the mistakes made on his side and on part of the AD that was in charge when he left. And, I think he can go back to his positive time while he was here and use it to his advantage.

He could absolutely do the job and make the university successful.

Not saying he should have fired anyone just saying he's never had to do it. Hard to detach yourself emotionally and make those types of decisions. No doubt he'll have to now.

Reading the possibility of him becoming AD (in the ff) He was painted as a cold hearted sob that could stab Johnny in the back.
After possibly becoming AD, he is to nice to fire anyone.

I'm left to conclude, he also suffers with multiple personality disorder.

I think a lot of people are underestimating how much help and how many resources Fulmer will have to help him make hires, make decisions and grow into the position. Do yall think every AD is a scouting genius at every sport? Hes going to have other people advising, firms to help with vetting and interviewing etc. Its a lot like being POTUS, sure hes the figurehead but theres a lot of other people helping do the work.
