I'm convinced all of our troubles started with the 2008 recruiting class. That class- full of three stars- absolutely killed us. Then on top of that, the 2009 class almost completely washing out and Kiffin trying to see how many people he could run off- still irritates me.

The '06 and '07 classes sucked too. '06 just wasn't good. '07 had a really high ranking, but everyone except EB busted.

His downfall is he didn't adapt how recruiting to the new competition. He was used to be able to pull stars out of Ga, SC, NC, KY and basically just get a majority of who he wanted from surrounding stats to make up for poor instate talent but then he also ignored instate talent too much that those guys snuck away. Then Richt gets hired at UGA closing those borders during his early run. Then Spurrier gets hired at SC then Butch Davis to NC. Three key states all of sudden weren't so easy to recruit anymore

Agree. He really did not keep growing his relationships in key states with the HS coaches and lost a lot of recruiting fire with staff hires. He used the same referral system and really didn't keep up with the changes very well. I knew it was the beginning of the end when key states for recruits got expanded to many areas outside the 400 mile circle that knew all about Tennessee football. Nothing against those kids at all or that you don't try to cherry pick elites, but that we are chasing more of our roster farther away proves you have lost ground at home. All of sudden 3* project type recruits from the west coast and TX are getting sold as elite players.

He was so good at recruiting for so long even he took it for granted until it was too late.

With this new db coach does that get us back into the mix with corker and speed, and what other db prospects should we keep an eye on

Folks - there is a complete staff organized in the AD office with assigned reporting in each sport/department. It's not like it will be Phil and and an AA doing the job for all of it out of the back of his pick-up. He's was involved in a business start up and equity company for years after getting terminated. He knows how to read financials, budgeting, etc. He knows/can be updated on internal reporting requirements. He knows the capital projects, fund raising, donors, etc. If he is hired, they will make sure he has the support he needs to succeed. Media relations with Phil would be fun to watch. Which might make it great sport for all us that know how the local media loves to shove it in UT's face at every opportunity.

Yes, Blackburn already knows all of it there and has proven he can do the job. Easily the best choice. But if they won't pull the trigger for whatever doofus reasoning, Fulmer can handle it. Those two guys love UT more than any other possible candidates. They will make decisions based on what is best for UT and not on what is best for their careers. THAT is the difference.

Coach Warren's twitter bio says special teams coordinator and DB coach so if you didn't have the confirmation you needed of Scott being the OC then that probablly seals the deal

Excellent post. Maybe the BOT can at least get a person who will put the university first.

No subscription but 👀👀👀👀!

Same guy that reported a search firm was hired that wasn't, And also reported Blackburn was all but done. Maybe he gets a hit with 2 strikes against him but I will wait before I believe it.

You left off rehiring our old OC and something about Barnett selling an autograph or something.

Butch's last four hires:

Scott
Shoop
Gullickson
Warren

So looking at this list, where does the belief that he only makes weak/ crony hires come from? Is it only from when he hired Debord( which worked out pretty alright, IMO)? From looking at his hires, it appears that he tries to get the best available hire that will work within his system to me.

It's what people want to hear. Proof, reality, verifiable truth, none of that matters when people want to believe something.

Hell, we've got fools blaming the Chancellor for the Blackburn mess even though she doesn't even assume a role in the Admin/start work until February.

I think Fulmer will do a good job. The man loves the Vols and can help Butch in a big way.

If he can do for Butch what Dickey did for him it will be the best hire UT has made in more than 15 years. I feel like people really underestimate Fulmer but he's smart as a whip, loves UT, knows how to fundraise like mad, has helped build a program up from scratch at ETSU, understands UT and athletics in general and has friends all over the coaching world. Those are all things that make for a good AD. Blackburn would be good for many of the same reasons so why it's ignored in Fulmer is just crazy to me.

Just the fact that he actually loves UT and cares about the university is enough for me. Much better than what we've had

Fulmer as new ad would be pretty good. Gotta think if butch ever leaves the Gruden coaching rumors would be higher then ever now....

Pretty interesting that we would hire a person to be AD and in control over all UT athletics, but we fired him because he ran the football program into the ground. Not saying that is my opinion, but I'm already hearing this being put out there. It's how we do it at UT.

Doug Dickey downright betrayed us -- left us high and dry for the Gators coaching job when it opened up and in a manner many think might've cost us the bowl game he was coaching. However, when he returned, he was also the best AD we ever had.
