Dan Wolken on UT AD Search:

I have friends in admin positions they litterally see it and if it's not from someone important they hit delete.

I believe you. I would almost say they have a filter and anything not from an address in their contacts goes to spam or another folder. That's why I sent it to like 20-30 people. I know they are busy, but this has been an ongoing trend and they need to quit delaying this crucial decision. I'm stubborn too.

However, I claim that my email caused Tennessee to announce Martinez's departure and the addition of Warren. You're welcome.

I've suspected for a while that "social justice" was at work here. I'm sorry, the AD's number one job should be to see that UT has the most successful athletics program possible. Number 2 should be to make money. Number 3 should be ensure NCAA compliance. And the list could go on for a while before you get to "social justice".

Let's just cancel football and turn Neyland into a giant safe space for the snowflakes.

There is nothing to suggest that this is due to social justice. She's gonna hire who she thinks is the best person for the job and go through the process of finding the best person. I mean just because we say Blackburn is the best candidate doesn't mean that she automatically knows why he is.

I wrote this email to President DiPietro:

"I write you to stress my concern for the way my beloved University is being ridiculed and laughed at across the country. I attended Tennessee for almost 7 years. I received my bachelors with honors and I graduated from Tennessee Law where I was in the top of my class. My point is academics are important to me, but that's not why I came to Tennessee.

I'm glad the University takes academics seriously and strives to become a top 25 public institution. I know there is value in my degrees. I'm happy to look around and see the new construction and campus growing. However, when did we lose focus on our athletics? I chose to come to Tennessee because I remember holding my parent's hand as we rushed to make kickoff. I remember learning to sing Rocky Top, battling the freezing cold to see some amazing games, watching some of the best players in the history of football play in Neyland, seeing Pat cut the nets down, and so many more amazing, cherished memories on Rocky Top. The Vols make fan's Monday's better, their hard times easier, and give them a reason to smile in a tough world. The University of Tennessee Volunteers brought my family together, they bring this State together, and they bring people together all across the country.

The current administration has embarrassed Tennessee and made us look like fools. We are frequently mocked and the punch line of many jokes. I'm sure you've seen where we finished dead last in the SEC in fall sports. I wonder if you have seen the numerous tweets, articles, and letters from national media members detailing how our beloved University is incompetent, "whack-o", and other foolish names. How we are being outdone by Alabama, Kentucky, Florida, and other schools all across the country. It seems our University is more in the news for trying to eliminate gender pronouns and Christmas parties than athletic success.

I know academics are important, but so are athletics, especially at Tennessee. We can improve in both. Think about the results of a successful athletic department on the furtherance of the University's academic goals. More students, more money, more publicity, and the benefits go on and on. Tennessee is not an Ivy League school, while we can improve academically and be a top 25 public institution, our greatest asset is that we are the home of the Vols. We must be true to ourselves and be proud of our identity: A strong southern school that plays a little football on the weekends.

The University of Tennessee means a lot to a lot of people, including me. It is dear to my heart. I love the University of Tennessee and I will always advocate on its behalf. Tennessee deserves nothing but the best. It means something to wear that Power T on your chest. But lately people have been ashamed and embarrassed to show their pride for Tennessee because they know they'll be met with laughs and ridicule. We want our Vols back. We want David Blackburn for the athletic director of Tennessee. Please quit delaying this process and begin restoring Tennessee's national reputation. Thank you! "

I have read all of the responses to your post. As usual the seem to reflect the (how do I say this)(shallowness?) of many who post on this site. I am the worst speller in the world, but when I start reading a post and run into a grammar gaf in the first sentence or so, I think, consider the source and usually move in. Sorry for the rant.
It is refreshing to read an intelligent post that states what I have tried to say (as have others) for some time now. Pride in our university does not lie in academics alone.

Well spoken....

Thought this for a while now since it was reported by people that know things that Butch and Barnes were lobbying for anyone other than Blackburn.

Butch and Barnes??? Do we let the tail wag the dog?? Who gives a sh-- what they want? It's not like they are world beaters in their positions. Hire who's best for the school, if they don't like it, let them move on.

This is just a joke at this point. How are you going to fill coaching vacancies when there is no leadership at the top? And what leadership there is looks completely inept or apathetic when it comes to athletics. Compare what Bama did to what Tennessee is doing. We're just a damn mess right now. I don't think Butch is going to be the coach that gets us there but he's really hamstrung by some of this.

Yea, LWS reported it. Though it's not public they've made it known.

Obviously it's working to some degree otherwise someone should have told them to shove it.

It feels like it won't be Blackburn because of internal blocking and accountability from coaching.

Did LWS say they didn't want Blackburn or were they just lobbying for Gilbert. I had heard Butch and Blackburn have a good relationship. I had also heard Butch was lobbying for Gilbert. Big difference in lobbying for one guy and blocking another though.

Lobbying.

Blocking is coming from boosters I think otherwise this wouldn't be a problem.

They should have fired Hart and let someone else do it since he's not doing a damn thing but drawing a check

Maybe I'm crazy here, but I'm not really worried about Blackburn getting passed over. This lady, Beverly Davenport just got the job. She is going to dot all her "i's" and cross all her "t's" in this age of social justice. She has to give time to applicants of all race and gender and not have it look like this is a choice made only by the good old boys money club at UT. Honestly, I tend to think she's just trying to cover her ass in her first big task at her new job. First female chancellor...she doesn't want to screw this up.

And HEREIN lies the problem!!!!

We inexperienced and attempting to be all PC while Bama continues to demonstrate the extreme difference in operating an elite UNIVERSITY.....

Hate the Bammites all you want....but they do have an EXCELLENT administration that yields a good academic school while recognizing the NEED for Athletic supremacy...WE DON'T!!! (ADMINISTRATION)....

That's the only thing they care about in Tuscaloosa the image of football isn't clouded with unimportant issues.

Does Wolken still have his personal problems that he had while in West TN? Also, when Bama wants to hire someone, they call Bryant Jr., and he either approves or denies. No committees or red tape.

No he didn't tell him. No way that got read.

I sent email to DiPietro back in November. Granted mine was not as long or emotional and I did not call their perceived incompetence into question.

I simply stated that I was a 2nd generation alumni and long time donor and season ticket holder and made the case why Blackburn was the best choice.

I did receive a direct response from DiPietro'S office thanking me for my input and that it would be passed on.

That's good, but you were respectful.. I'll probably get a "the email you tried to contact is no longer is working order." Haha

I don't care if she puts hearts over her small letter i's. Just hire the right person regardless of all the noise.
