Dan Wolken on UT AD Search:

"Already hearing people in the industry grumble about Alabama out-maneuvering Tennessee on the AD hire. Have heard wacky stuff on Vols."

"Very political. Not your standard AD search."

"Typical search = Hire search firm, find best up and coming AD with appropriate resume. This isn't going that way as of now."

All quotes from Twitter.

Can someone provide insights on why this search is so political and who we need to publicaly shame?

FWIW Hyams is on Nashville radio stating that this is all about Davenport having a chance to personally interview candidates from behind the desk in the chancellor's office. He says Bama's hire reduced the list of likely candidates from 5 to 4. He thinks Fulmer is highly unlikely but he does think that if Blackburn is hired Fulmer will take some kind of position related to the football program.

Maybe I'm crazy here, but I'm not really worried about Blackburn getting passed over. This lady, Beverly Davenport just got the job. She is going to dot all her "i's" and cross all her "t's" in this age of social justice. She has to give time to applicants of all race and gender and not have it look like this is a choice made only by the good old boys money club at UT. Honestly, I tend to think she's just trying to cover her ass in her first big task at her new job. First female chancellor...she doesn't want to screw this up.

My concern is that her PRIMARY concern is social justice warrior BS. As in, Lets make sure we develop continuing cohorts of special snowflakes in their safe spaces (as long as you are not caucasian, christian or conservative) and second priority being academics and way in the rear (pun intended) is winning championships - and if championships are the focus, it is for a cross dressing underwater basketweaving team, because hey, that shows how progressive we are.

Now, I have absolutely no evidence that this is the case but you darn well better believe that she was hired with UT's (mostly made up) Title IX issues in mind. She, herself, may well be the most qualified candidate to be Chancellor and as I have no expertise to judge that, I leave that to those who do. From my tiny bit of research, she seems to have the requisite experience and good qualifications. I just hope her priorities are in the order that the greatest number of Alumni would agree with, instead of what seems to be the burning cause of so many campuses and that is to spit out young minds actively hostile to our country, our heritage, our culture. I truly hope she is the exception and expect nothing less from UT - to be that shining orange light on a hill in a sea of darkness.

After the Title 9 settlement, BOT and DePietro could have made an immediate change in AD but they chose to leave it all for the new Chancellor to handle. We don't know what she has been told her priorities are either.

I've suspected for a while that "social justice" was at work here. I'm sorry, the AD's number one job should be to see that UT has the most successful athletics program possible. Number 2 should be to make money. Number 3 should be ensure NCAA compliance. And the list could go on for a while before you get to "social justice".

Let's just cancel football and turn Neyland into a giant safe space for the snowflakes.

Tennessee is going to to Tennessee.

Blackburn was heavily against Dooley and was pretty open about it to the boosters that wanted Dooley. Plus there's a camp that doesn't want him as the AD, because expectations and demands will be dramatically higher.

Tennessee has a head basketball coach that doesn't travel to recruit and a football coach that doesn't make winning the East a goal. Even when we're the deepest and most talented team in the east. That's not going to fly with Blackburn.

It has nothing to due with social justice. It's all about egos and some not wanting to be held accountable.

They may well have some kind of backroom deal with Blackburn that he will be brought in closer to the end of Hart's tenure so as to limit the time they're paying two people to do the same job, but if that's the case I don't know why BOT/UT President wouldn't go ahead and announce an agreement in principle.

I don't know why Davenport isn't there yet. I also think that the longer this drags on the more opportunity for mischief.

Yep. I tend to agree with this.

I think both Jones and especially Barnes have been lobbying pretty hard for Gilbert to step up to maintain status quo and get their golden parachutes fluffed a little more.

Yeah, her job is to hire the best person in the most reasonable amount of time to get the best result out of the AD. Nothing more. The PC garbage needs to stay out of this university.

I thought her first official day is February 15. Until then (if I have the date right), she won't do anything. She will want to start out squeaky clean.

I wrote this email to President DiPietro:

"I write you to stress my concern for the way my beloved University is being ridiculed and laughed at across the country. I attended Tennessee for almost 7 years. I received my bachelors with honors and I graduated from Tennessee Law where I was in the top of my class. My point is academics are important to me, but that's not why I came to Tennessee.

I'm glad the University takes academics seriously and strives to become a top 25 public institution. I know there is value in my degrees. I'm happy to look around and see the new construction and campus growing. However, when did we lose focus on our athletics? I chose to come to Tennessee because I remember holding my parent's hand as we rushed to make kickoff. I remember learning to sing Rocky Top, battling the freezing cold to see some amazing games, watching some of the best players in the history of football play in Neyland, seeing Pat cut the nets down, and so many more amazing, cherished memories on Rocky Top. The Vols make fan's Monday's better, their hard times easier, and give them a reason to smile in a tough world. The University of Tennessee Volunteers brought my family together, they bring this State together, and they bring people together all across the country.

The current administration has embarrassed Tennessee and made us look like fools. We are frequently mocked and the punch line of many jokes. I'm sure you've seen where we finished dead last in the SEC in fall sports. I wonder if you have seen the numerous tweets, articles, and letters from national media members detailing how our beloved University is incompetent, "whack-o", and other foolish names. How we are being outdone by Alabama, Kentucky, Florida, and other schools all across the country. It seems our University is more in the news for trying to eliminate gender pronouns and Christmas parties than athletic success.

I know academics are important, but so are athletics, especially at Tennessee. We can improve in both. Think about the results of a successful athletic department on the furtherance of the University's academic goals. More students, more money, more publicity, and the benefits go on and on. Tennessee is not an Ivy League school, while we can improve academically and be a top 25 public institution, our greatest asset is that we are the home of the Vols. We must be true to ourselves and be proud of our identity: A strong southern school that plays a little football on the weekends.

The University of Tennessee means a lot to a lot of people, including me. It is dear to my heart. I love the University of Tennessee and I will always advocate on its behalf. Tennessee deserves nothing but the best. It means something to wear that Power T on your chest. But lately people have been ashamed and embarrassed to show their pride for Tennessee because they know they'll be met with laughs and ridicule. We want our Vols back. We want David Blackburn for the athletic director of Tennessee. Please quit delaying this process and begin restoring Tennessee's national reputation. Thank you! "

Sounds like a lawyer wrote it.

😁 Ha ha, just kidding. Very well spoken and well written. Hopefully it'll actually be read by his own eyes instead of a secretary Who gives a robotic response.

Trump will have taken over Presidency of the United States in a shorter time than it takes this woman to move from Cincinnati to Knoxville.

Thought this for a while now since it was reported by people that know things that Butch and Barnes were lobbying for anyone other than Blackburn.

Thanks. I just typed it up on my phone and sent it last night. I know it probably will not be read, but at least I tried. I wanted to do something instead of just rant on here. I'm hoping if enough people speak up something will get done. I hope he has hundreds or thousands of similar emails and the sheer number alone creates influence on the administration to act. But the people in Tennessee's administration are making so much money I doubt they truly care about a few (or many) impatient fans.

I probably will get an email back and, as others said, I'll probably lose my parking space or they'll find overlooked "costs" I didn't satisfy while I was a student. Haha

The longer it goes the less likely it's Blackburn and the more likely it's someone like Dooley. Name sounds great but they don't know the first thing about running the show.

Eventually theyll have to have discussions about who's left..

I have friends in admin positions they litterally see it and if it's not from someone important they hit delete.
