Realistically: Can We Win 9 Games This Year With A New QB?

We could still win the east if we make the right hires in the off season and sc coach is a straight up boss. Won't be easy but it is very possible it all depends on development and coaches in my opinion. For all great things Dobbs did he also had a lot of flaws so having someone who can throw and run around a high level would be huge. Also Dobbs turned ball over at inopportune times in big games this year so qb play in my opinion may not be quite rough as we think.....coaching and development will be crucial to finally take a step forward

I think it depends on the qb. Jg would be our best chance, with his running ability. Slot like Dobbs, creating something out of nothing.

Yes and no. Great defense for sure. Also had the #1 scoring offense in the SEC and the SEC offensive player of the year in Hurts.

All benefits of playing at Alabama with a good oline, TE, RB and WR. Hurts got that award because he was the QB at Alabama that its. Dobbs was far better. Hurts may turn into a great QB, but he was not great this year. Good runner for sure and he had his moments, just like every other QB.

Many teams start a new QB and win 9

BUT

We will have a new QB, New S&C coach, New OC,

Possibly

New DB coach, New LB coach, New OL coach

Coaching staff that has not meshed yet and a head coach that is not the best game day coach.

I'm sticking with 8-4 next year at best.

Edit: Oh yeah I forgot Shoop has not proven a thing to me yet. So yeah 8-4 at best.

I'm feeling 7-5 realistically.

Historically UT doesn't fire a coach until he drops to below 6-6.

We fired Fulmer at 5-7, and then fired Dooley at 5-7. I believe Fulmer was actually 4-7 though right before he was fired.

A whole lot of truth in this post.
That's why I believe unless Jones loses 7 or more games next season, he will return for 2018 and many around here are going to be really upset.

We can win 9. We can win 10. We can also lose 5 or 6. Too many factors other than QB.

We are starting a new QB and implementing new starters, so can we realistically even make it to 9 wins?

How much of a production drop do you guys expect if at all with a new QB?

Depends on the OL and particularly the development of the OL. I think any of the 3 returning guys could be really good behind an OL that protects them. But when an OL averages over 2 sacks per game vs the SEC with a QB as mobile as Dobbs... you can't realistically expect someone else to step in and perform.

So basically UT will face the same situation about half of all college football teams face each year... many of which go on to perform at a high level.

If the coaches don't "mesh" pretty quickly then you need a new "mesher".... someone who knows how to effectively lead a staff with 9 months to organize them.

Shoop hasn't proven anything? You mean other than turning around the D's at Vandy and PSU WITHOUT HIG PROFILE TALENT?

Shoop had nothing to do with the depth issues or injury issues that he fought this year. Out of this whole staff... he may be the ONLY one who has demonstrated the coaching talent to compete at the Power 5 level.

Why not? I don't get the assumption that *our* young guys are always not as good as 'their' young guys. That our sophomore QB, with a year in the system, simply can't help us generate 9 - or even 8 - wins and is mysteriously never as good as 'their' freshman QBs.

We need to learn to expect more of our coaching staff and their ability to develop players.

Yeah, I'm not sure why people are running with this "we'll be lucky to win 8" narrative. Given the injuries we suffered this season even though we'll be losing some big contributors (Barnett, Sutton, Dobbs, Kamara) if we don't have the same ****e luck with injuries we'll have a deeper roster next year.

Well i did just read on vn that JRM was returning for his senior season, so that should help us get to 9 wins.

7 losses is a very realistic possibility. GT, UF, UGA, Bama, and LSU are 5. Who knows what will happen or how injured we'll be against USC or Vandy. I'd never guess we'd go 8-4 again this year and lose to the last two.
