Realistically: Can We Win 9 Games This Year With A New QB?

I always get blasted for it but thinking this team will be better than this past season is unrealistic.

A new OC and a new QB doesn't equal success for Tennessee in 17.

Just look at this past season with new QB.

A new DC in 2016 doesnt equate success either. Usually takes a year to get going.

I'm going yes. A new QB that has been groomed for years, with Bird, Calloway, a few new recievers, and JJ. One of the most experienced offensive lines in years, Kelley will break a few, and a D that has some bodies to fill some holes next year.

Let's look at what the competition will look like next year as well. A lot of newness in the SEC next year. The one you gotta watch out for will be USC.

I think we can win anywhere from 7 to 12 next year. Realistically 8-10.

Georgia Tech (Atlanta): W, 60%
Indiana State: W, 95%
@Florida: Tossup, 48%, depends on how fast FL defense ramps up with 7-8 new starters
UMASS: W, 95%
Georgia: Tossup, 51%, don't expect Chubb to get much better but OL will, Sony is VG
SCAR: W, 75%, Mucuschamp has our number but we will exact revenge & beeotch slap um!
@bama: L, 38%, unless 75% of Juniors declare early. We do catch them at the end of an 8 game run including @Vandy, Ole Miss, @aTm, Arky, then Tennessee.
@KY: W, 58%, Tough road game/Trap game, KY brings back lots of starters.
Southern Miss: W, 75%, far from a pushover, but should TCB.
@Mizzou: W, 80%, Not sure Heupal can pull off another great offense next season with scrubs again.
LSU: Tossup, 45%, real tough matchup. Under Miles a late season swoon was very likely, with Orgeron, don't know. We are sandwiched between bama, Arky, TN and aTM on their schedule, so maybe they will be worn down some.
Vandy: W, 95%, they will be better but we will exact our revenge on them. They are gonna be T-Bagged all night long!

So that is 8-1-3. If we win 1 tossup, that puts us at 9-3 with a bowl game.

We lose 1 WR Malone (+PWilly), 1 RB Kamara (+Hurd), Dobbs, on Offense: not bad numbers wise but Talent Heavy losses. No OL or TE losses.

We lose both starting DEs (great ones), JRM, Cam, Foreman, +DannyO, again considering we really didn't have JRM, Cam and DannyO most of the of the season, we are replacing 3 starters from our end point and getting K-Mac and Tuttle back. But heavy talent losses.

Special Teams we lose both punt returners but bring back Evan, Medley who is good but can be great and a great punter.

So we just need a few key cogs to step it up on DL, CB, WR and QB. Between QD/JG, Phillips/Kongbo/Taylor, Shy/K-Mac, Byrd, Calloway and Latrell, Nigel, etc. we have some great kids that can fill in some holes next season.

CB is my biggest concern by far.

Realistically- anything is possible
Likely - no

Sadly, i think we are about to find out just how good Josh Dobbs was and it will not be pretty. We are losing 3 guys with first round talent level, several guys with nfl roster talent level and somehow we havent developed enough depth to expect to be competative with SEC bottom feeders. I expect next year to be ugly. CBJ has earned another year, but i doubt he earns another after bext season. But i could be wrong and we might make the Belk bowl or something.

Right. After finding out how good Peyton Manning was, losing him after '97, it would be impossible to have a QB that could take us to a Nat. C. the following year. We would just be losing too much. Not possible.

How did you come to this?
Butch simply can't beat him no matter the talent he lacks

That's not a bad break down. I think the % will be better against bama, 45% making it a toss up too.

Go Vols!

Right. After finding out how good Peyton Manning was, losing him after '97, it would be impossible to have a QB that could take us to a Nat. C. the following year. We would just be losing too much. Not possible.

Its really sad that people cant see past one fact in the grand scheme of things and use that one fact in a sad attempt to valid a point .
We lost Manning, Nash and Little
We returned fred white, grant, travis henry, goodrich, stephens, wilson, lewis, price, Thompson, coleman, clifton, ellis, weary, and thats just off the top of my head.

This year we lose dobbs, malone, hurd, kamara, williams, barnett, lewis, sutton, JRM, Foreman, Croom, Vereen, Bynum, wiesman,

Which effects us at nearly every area on the field and of course we all know are depth isnt developed to compete with vandy, much less top teir teams.

Add to that the 1998 team was lead by coach whose worst season to that point equals CBJ best season and had also put up season of 10, 11, 10 and 11 wins.

So yeah, go ahead and run with at whole feels like 98 theme.

"Couldn't beat Florida with Manning. No way we stay on the field with them next year with this inexperienced kid"

"Fulmer blew his chance! Should have had TWO NC's with our greatest QB ever!"

"Cut cost Peyton the Heisman with that Jamal Lewis freshman crap. Should have been on the field day one! Fire this clown and get Nebraska's OC!"

"Let's face it. Fulmer has always been able to recruit, but we've always underachieved with him. It's not ever going to get better...wish I was wrong"

"Losing to Memphis State last year was a fireable offense! Get rid of this clown"

Heard and or read all of the above after 97...and much more. You guys didn't reinvent the wheel by making it even more circular. :shades:

At most, they are underdogs in 4 games next year. 2 in Neyland, 2 on the road.

And I don't think they are a major underdog against anyone except Bama.

There will be a lot of analysis to the point of paralysis about next season, but it's real simple in the SEC East next season.

How good is the QB at Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. If Tennessee has a good QB, they have a shot in every game except Alabama.

Doesn't mean they win them. But, they have a shot

Absolutely.

JG will prove to be a phenomenon. Kelly will be Kamara part ll. Jennings will get 1100 yds, and our defense will be anchored by Shy, Kahlil, Phillips (Derek Barnett clone) and King Kongbo. Kirkland will mature into a Reuben Foster type player and TK,jr will be All SEC.

Why can't that lineup win 10 games next season?
