There are plenty of examples of first timers doing well, but plenty more of the opposite. It's like saying "JJ Watt and Eric Fisher were 2 stars so we should take 2* recruits over a 4 or 5*." A proven, excellent play caller is always a better choice than a first timer. You can always find exceptions, but history says the 5* guys outperform the 2* guys most of the time.

If Butch's search parameters are "don't change the offense because this is a critical year and I don't want another Sunseri or Clawson," what are his realistic options other than Scott?

I realize people want to remain optimistic but this feels like 2012 to me.

You try to instigate almost every post. You literally just did it with Bassmaster_Vol. You're a troll, at least own it.

I believe my posts, while not to your accepted level of graciousness, are based on fact.

You claim Scott has no experience calling plays. I countered with a sound argument and some good nature ribbing that you couldn't handle, thus I am a troll?

Bassmaster has the tendency to go off the deep end sometimes as he demonstrated with his post. I just pointed it out.

If that is being a troll I must have wasted 9 YEARS and 8300 posts on here.

Dang it.

Scott, Shoop, and CRG look like they're staying. That's good enough for me. The rest are easily replaceable. I do hope the clean sweep of defensive assistants works out, though. I'm giving Shoop a pass because of the supposed poor staff chemistry on his side of the ball and the rash of injuries.

Slightly different records.

Sure. I think it's fair to say Butch has more people behind him than Dooley did going into 2012. But remember, we were damn near unanimous that Sunseri was going to be great and after that NC State beatdown we were as unified as ever.

**** can hit the fan quickly - and there are some striking similarities regarding staff movement.

How many coaches other than Sunseri did we replace before that final season?

Rofl, read man. I never said QBs are the only ones that can a be good OC. All I said was Scott has never called plays, not even in the huddle like a QB does, which would only count for an infinitesimal amount of experience calling plays in the first place. It was a humorous way of saying he doesnt even have experience calling plays in ways that don't matter, let alone ways that do matter.

Many of the best OC's are former offensive linemen.

The big differences here are that we will be keeping the same defensive and offensive systems. With Sunseri we changed our system from a base 4-3 to a base 3-4. Whoever comes in for OC Butch has already acknowledged that we are keeping the same system, but add some very small tweaks to it. Obviously we don't know what these tweaks will be right now, but that is no where near a complete change in defensive scheme.
