That was a one year window and I don't trust that article to be accurate. There's too many items that can be recorded differently or money moved around to be accurate.
Choosing to believe the Forbes article or not is your choice. It's all I've seen in the subject by a reputable source (Forbes). Until I see something contradictory that's all I have to go on.
Doesn't have the backing of the university. The Vols make a lot more money than the tide. Doesn't make financial sense to them.
You are misreading the article. Alabama makes way more money. They earned 97m in revenue. Second only to Texas. They just put way more back into football. Article says they spent 11m more than anyone else. So it looks like Tennessee is worried about profits and Bama is worried about winning.
It's just a one year snap shot. It changes yearly. 2015 saw Nike come on board and we fielded a viable team for the first time in years.
Here's a quote from the article.
That's not an especially new theme in Knoxville -- Tennessee ranked seventh in value last year at $94 million, again thanks largely to a massive profit margin, and the school's athletic department as a whole was 13th in profitability -- but this year it was successful enough to push the team ahead of the likes of LSU (No. 4, $111 million), Michigan ($105 million), Georgia ($102 million) and Ohio State ($100 million).
I think with Saban, it helps that every aspect of the program is working at a high level from recruiting to S&C to execution. And of course, the biggest thing is having more talent than your opponent at virtually every position. But one thing I've sort of noticed is that he doesn't seem to outsmart himself. He doesn't rotate 7 or 8 WR, his best 3 or 4 are the ones out there every snap unless it's garbage time and his best WR usually gets the most targets. Another thing is that no matter who his OC is, if he finds something that works he'll beat the other team over the head with it until the clock goes 0:00. Whether it's designed runs around the edge with Hurts, QB draws up the middle with Matt Mauck, or quick passes to Hall, he doesn't go away from it if it works and he dares his opponent to make him stop. They usually can't.
Blech, it kind of made me sick to say all that.
It's still backs up my point. We make enough money but the university is happy with the profit. They view it as a risk to invest as much money as Bama with the relatively miniscule amount of revenue it would potentially bring in. Where's the incentive to spend all that money?
Goes beyond that. It's the entire state. Legislature, police, media, and tons of big business are making sure Bama stays on top.
