I worry it will hurt his recruiting actually. OCs have more responsibilities and usually don't spend quite as much time on the trail as a position coach.

Yeah I see what you're saying. I guess my point was that a promotion to OC helps his stock with recruits and he's already proven to be a very good recruiter.

I say 3 out of 4 have been hits/upgrades.

The lone outlier is shoop who was the most proven and can still redeem himself this year. And as you said his defense saw unprecedented injuries.

Never a fan of Not letting a DC not bring some of his own coaches in either especially when teaching an aggressive defense compared to our previous passive aggressive defense. I really hope we pull Barlow to coach our corners. Dude can flat out coach

Scott - OC
Canales - QB coach
Wells - OL coach
Barlow - DB coach
Hoke - DL coach
Gullickson - S&C coach

That's a lot of staff movement. Think the narrative that Butch is resistant to blow up his staff will be, well, blown up after NSD and these hires are finalized.

Barlow and Gullickson are the two biggest hires to me. DBs are not good under Martinez and S&C was a blunder in 2016. Need to get the physicality from 2015 back.

Butch's secondary staff hires, meaning, not the original group have been:

1. Gillespie
2. Debord
3. Scott
4. Shoop

Debord had a lot of frustrating moments, but he just led a hugely productive offense.

I think Shoop is legit, and the injuries were the story this season.

I honestly don't see a lot to fret about as far as who Butch hires. From my seat, I don't want Canales, but I'll give the benefit of the doubt.

I'm not sure if I should like Canales or Weinke better. Honestly, how do any of you guys know? Our information seems pretty limited. Canales could be a certified quarterback coaching savant. None of us are inside coaching circles enough to make a true educated assessment.

This group is throwing around blind guesses based on a Heisman trophy and a couple previous jobs where we have no insight on their responsibilities or performance. Per usual, we know very little.

Like you said, Butch's previous staff hires are panning out pretty well. Let's see where this one goes.

Also, Azzani could be pissed enough about getting passed over again to move on. And I'm pretty sure I read that although Jones would like to keep Thigpen, he's not likely to get into a bidding war to keep him from taking other opportunities.

Yup, those seem to be the replacement coaches. Canales is likely an upgrade in coaching, Wells and Hoke upgrades in recruiting, Barlow can't do worse coaching, hopefully he's a good recruiter and I think the S&C coach is a great hire. Add all that up with limited injuries this time around and pretty soon we'll be back to predicting 15-0.

Losing Z due to being passed up would def. not be a big issue at all imo. He's an ok recruiter, micromanaging WR coach, and seems to be very hard headed. I would upgrade him with another excellent recruiter if he leaves.

I think Azanni improved greatly this year. WR corp was much much improved, and despite losing Malone, I think it'll be better next year.

I woke up, and we're firing Butch again. I'm thinking, "Good grief... literally nothing has happened since yesterday." :eek:lol:

A lot of them remind me of my mother in law.

Say you call and tell her you'll be to their house at 6:00pm.

If no call or text by 6:02pm, she'll basically say "Welp, they must be dead."

I wonder if Rod Smith, Co-OC/QB @ Arizona, could be one of those unnamed candidates. Could have ties to Jones through Rodriguez and looks like he may have served at least one year on staff at USF with Larry Scott.

CZA will leave if Scott is promoted to OC imo. Well if anyone would hire him anyway.

Don't you throw new names out there (even though I'm curious) we (VN) already named the new coaches and gave them appropriate salaries

What college kid wants to work harder? I just couldn't listen to my team leaders in this situation. I get it, you want your team leadership to have some say, but this is a HUGE decision he allowed players to influence. He was trying to do the right thing, I get it. However, the damage was done before the season even started imo

Don't misunderstand me...I agree, it was a bad call. I just said it was understandable.

Those not liking the potential of hiring Canales are just going by name factor alone. He has had a wide and varied career coaching at a lot of different places. While not a known name in this area, does not mean he would stink at recruiting.
I guess it gets back to the idea of comfort and fit. If Butch is comfortable with hiring him then I can live with it, knowing it is his a'" in the sling if it doesn't work out. Which is the case no matter who he hires.

Just rather get someone who would give us a recruiting boost. Not sure Canales is that guy

I actually think the first half of his career is pretty solid, it's the back half of his career that concerns me.
