I'm not just talking about head coaches. Look at who we're thinking about hiring for OC, QB even the strength coach. I don't want to come across as trashing the new SC coach because he may be the best in the field. What I am saying is notice that all the names including the SC coach are coaches that have just been fired or make you scratch your head? Would Nick Saban seriously consider any of these guys? These are hires of convenience. We should be able to go pluck about anyone we want.

I agree with Ziti on this one. I just don't think this is as realistic anymore. Can we hire great coaches? Sure. But we aren't going to go and pluck who we want because we are UT. There are 50+ Power 5 programs now that bring in serious money. The money difference just isn't much of a difference anymore. Coaches are looking for stability and comfort when money is equal. We have great facilities, and I can't compare ours to others. But there are numerous programs that are paying big money to upgrade.

We have a great, historical program, and it's my alma mater. But the college football landscape has changed a lot in the last 10 years. We aren't Alabama, and no other program is either. There is a great chance we will never be this Alabama.

The guy has been around a long time. My only worry would be his recruiting. I think he could handle coaching qbs lol

I agree, I think he'll be a good quarterback coach but not such a good recruiter at UT. But I do think that Larry Scott, who is arguably our best recruiter right now (alongside CRG), will do an even better job on the recruiting trail with this promotion.

Should help with Scott. Those kids will expect him to be here longer now and be more willing to jump in when he says what he will do since he actually calls plays. I bet you he actually uses Byrd that's for sure

I worry it will hurt his recruiting actually. OCs have more responsibilities and usually don't spend quite as much time on the trail as a position coach.

You guys act like players can't improve and step up. Malone wasn't a loss until he all the sudden became a boss. Now he's not replaceable apparently.

We've got Byrd, Jennings and Smith coming back along with several young guys who can make an impact.

I really like our young receiver core. Last year's class was strong on that front. I also think Murphy has the ability to make an impact on day 1.

Hey Ron or any one for that matter, I am not familiar with Canales. Is there a place I can look or could you give me just a short info about him? Where he coached and why he wouldn't be a good fit here. Thanks guys for your help.

Saban hired Kiffin, who was untouchable and replaced him with Sarkisian...who is a 12 step disaster. Nobody better out there?

Utah State player that has QB coaching experience dating back to 87. One year stint as a WR coach for the Jets. Extensive OC experience at lesser programs and Arizona. One of those coaches that has been on the verge but never got that big opportunity. I don't see the dynamic in this guy but how many QB coaches are flashy?

Google sensei will help you.

Beside that, the main point of contention isn't his ability to teach our QBs. I would actually say that he would most likely be a pretty good teacher for our QBs. The problem lies in the fact he would be a very underwhelming recruiter and that his career has been in a downward spiral the past ~decade. We could and should hire better. It's a very Butch move, but like Debord I could see it working out just fine.

Butch's secondary staff hires, meaning, not the original group have been:

1. Gillespie
2. Debord
3. Scott
4. Shoop

Debord had a lot of frustrating moments, but he just led a hugely productive offense.

I think Shoop is legit, and the injuries were the story this season.

I honestly don't see a lot to fret about as far as who Butch hires. From my seat, I don't want Canales, but I'll give the benefit of the doubt.

I say 3 out of 4 have been hits/upgrades.

The lone outlier is shoop who was the most proven and can still redeem himself this year. And as you said his defense saw unprecedented injuries.
